Quitting Smoking
Quitting Smoking Why you should stop smoking:
  • Approximately 500,000 people die each year in the U.S. from diseases caused by smoking. Smoking is responsible for one in five deaths. Smoking has been linked to lung cancer, heart disease, stroke and asthma, as well as pregnancy complications in pregnant women. Studies have shown that non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke may also be at risk for lung cancer and asthma. For infants, second hand smoke has been linked to crib death, or sudden infant death syndrome.
Will stopping smoking help me now?
Quitting smoking has proven health benefits. Lungs begin to repair damage and circulation improves immediately. Within a year, the added risk of heart disease, stroke, lung disease and cancer is reduced. Quitting smoking is especially important if you are pregnant or a new parent. Smoking affects your ability to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. Your doctor can help you to quit. National guidelines recommend that physicians ask their patients if they smoke. For patients who do smoke, doctors are advised to repeatedly encourage them to quit and to recommend treatments proven to help stop smoking.

Bill Seeks To Ban Smoking In Your Car
Bill Designed To Offer Health Protection To Children
POSTED: 10:57 am PDT May 6, 2004
UPDATED: 11:55 am PDT May 6, 2004
LOS ANGELES California could be the first state in the country to fine motorists who smoke while driving with young children in the car if a bill passed by an Assembly committee Wednesday becomes law. The bill, passed by the Assembly Appropriations Committee and now on its way to the full Assembly, would lead to fines up to $96. The author, Assemblyman Marco Firebaugh, D-South Gate, and other supporters said the bill would give children "much-needed protections" against health problems caused by breathing tobacco smoke. "The United States Environmental Protection Agency has declared secondhand smoke as a human carcinogen and has indicated that there is no safe level of such exposure," said Paul Knepprath, a lobbyist for the American Lung Association. He likened the bill to laws that require young children to ride in special protective seats when in moving vehicles.

Smoking Nails Your Heart Royally!
Based on findings of the American Heart Association, cigarette smoking is a leading cause of heart and blood vessel problems among Americans. Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the United States. About 430,000 Americans will die each year from smoking-related health problems. The third most preventable cause of death is secondhand smoke - or smoke from other people. Atherosclerosis (clogged arteries) is the number one cause of death from smoking. Cigarette smoking:
  • Causes coronary heart disease , which leads to heart attacks. It doubles the chance of having a heart attack.
  • Damages the coronary arteries , which supply heart muscle tissue with blood and nutrients.
  • Damages the flow of blood needed by men to have an erection. Smoking and diabetes are the leading cause of impotency (inability to have an erection).
  • Harms the aorta , the large blood vessel that moves blood from the heart to all parts of the body except the lungs.

Perhaps it's because people who floss tend to be more health conscious than people who don't? Thought for the day: Floss and be your body's boss. Avoid Excessive Drinking While recent studies show a glass of wine or one drink a day (two for men) can help protect against heart disease, more than that can cause other health problems such as liver and kidney disease and cancer. Thought for the day: A jug of wine should last a long time. Keep a Positive Mental Outlook There's a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life. Peer Review Status: Internally Reviewed I smoke occasionally, generally only when I go out on the weekends. Am I doing long-term damage to myself? Possibly. No one starts out to become an addicted smoker. In fact, especially on a college campus, many students who smoke numerous cigarettes don't even consider themselves smokers, because they don't smoke daily, don't buy their own, or only smoke when drinking. However, only 1 in 10 people actually have the "luxury" of being non-addicted social smokers, known as "chippers." It is a rare person indeed who has a few cigarettes a week and never sees that use increase. The others are forming solid addictive patterns that are leading in the direction of more frequent or even daily smoking. Most definitions of a smoker agree that if you can answer "yes" to the following questions, you've "joined the club":
  • "Have you smoked at least 100 cigarettes in your lifetime?"

Second-Hand Smoke
You probably know that smoking is bad for you, but do you know that you can get sick from other people smoking? It's true! The smoke from cigarettes, pipes and cigars contains harmful chemicals. It even contains some chemicals that are known to cause cancer! Do you have asthma, allergies, or ear infections? They can all get much worse if you are exposed to smoke! Children who have smoking parents are much more likely to be sick than children of non-smoking parents. It's not fair, is it? If someone else is smoking and it bothers you, you should tell them that you don't like it. If they still don't stop, then you should try to go somewhere else until they're done smoking. The smoke from cigarettes is very bad for you; you should avoid it whenever you can! Search:
