88. Suzie Q : Smocking Pleater Box
Recently I have been getting back into sewing and smocking and I came across several posts on Delphi s Heirloom sewing smocking Forum that gave instructions
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/suzieqweblog/pleaterbox.htm
I have had my smocking pleater for nearly four years and I've been wanting to get one of those nifty thread boxes for it for the longest time. I have always just kept my thread spools in a cardboard shoe box on the floor as I pleated my fabric on the edge of a table. The threads would get all twisted around as the spools spun around and I would always end up with a mess!! I've always dealt with it since I don't smock that much anymore and because the thread boxes I've seen are quite costly. In the past I have made several sketches of how I planned on making my own thread box out of wood, but I just never got around to it. Recently I have been getting back into sewing and smocking and I came across several posts on that gave instructions on how to make an inexpensive thread box out of a plastic craft box. I immedately ran out to to pickup the supplies I needed to make my own thread box!!
Supplies needed:
  • one plastic divided craft box with a hinged lid
make sure that the sections are large enough to hold a spool of thread
  • self-adhesive velcro
length equal to that of the long side of the box
i used both self-adhesive and regular velcro because I am very particular
  • drill
  • ruler
  • pen or pencil
  • extra fine point Sharpie permanent marker
  • spools of thread for your pleater
I usually use orange quilting thread because it is visible no matter what color fabric you pleat (except orange)
I bought this divided plastic craft box at on sale for $1.49. This box has 16 sections the size of the spool of thread and one double long section that you can use to place two spools of thread. Since I rarely need that many rows, I am using the double long section to store extra pleater needles.

Machine Smocking
Machine smocking is a nice alternative to hand smocking. Due to the nature of machine stitching, you will have stitches on the back and front of the fabric at all times. This just means you need to adjust your thinking if you have done hand smocking before. How To Smock by Machine * Start with properly pleated fabric (preferably with a pleater meant for smocking) * Adjust the pleats and the size, then secure to stabilizer or interfacing (your choice of type). * Do the geometric smocking or "backsmocking" with the stitches on your sewing machine. If you have a large capacity embroidery machine, we have a group of these designs ready for the hoop. Otherwise, use the three-step straight stitch to duplicate the look of geometric smocking. If you can't program your utility stitches on your sewing machine, use decorative stitches. These can often look very much like smocking when done on pleated fabric. * Hoop stabilizer and position your prepared pleating on top of the hooped stabilizer. Now, you can stitch the "picture smocking" design. FAQ's Why can't I just use a regular design? The reason these designs look hand done, is they are digitized to imitate the stitching pattern of hand smocking. Regular designs don't look anything like hand smocking.
