Slovenia Topic Outline The independent state of the Republic of Slovenia was declared on 25 June 1991, adopting a democratic parliamentary system. It had emerged from of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia formed in 1945. The Slovenian nation has had a long and remarkable history. Important historical events are traced in the web sites and are referred to in the topic activities. Contributions of some Slovenians are given in www.uvi.si/10years/contribution/
Slovenia was the first democracy of Europe as documented already in 611AD, known as Caranthania, part of which is in present day Austria. The system was studied by political theorists. The leader's stone throne of the day still stands in the original place in Austria. It is regarded as significant in the development of Western democracy, and referred to in the writings of Thomas Jefferson's American Declaration of Independence. The Slovenian nation became a feudal state after 745AD and was ruled by the Austro-Hungarian monarchy until 1918. In 1918 it became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.

History's river flows through a Slovenian valley Michael Benson IHT
Friday, April 30, 2004 Europe reunited LJUBLJANA, Slovenia In the summer of 1991, I went with a Slovenian friend to visit her grandmother in an Alpine valley not far from the Italian border. Our underpowered Yugo strained to climb a road whose slope at times must have approached 18 degrees. Slovenia was then still within a legal limbo, officially seceded from Yugoslavia but not yet recognized by most of the world as an independent state. No air travel in or out of the new country was yet permitted because of this legal ambiguity - which didn't keep the Yugoslav Air Force from periodically sending jets screaming across the tiny nation. The attempted intimidation didn't work, however, and soon the Serbian-controlled Yugoslav Army shifted its attention and set to bloody work in Croatia and Bosnia. Slovenia was free.
Because of the relative tranquillity with which it gained its independence, it is possible to forget that Slovenia, set to become one of the newest members of the European Union on Saturday, used to be the westernmost republic of the former Yugoslavia. Tiny, low-profile Slovenia, population just under two million, enters the EU with the highest standard of living and most vibrant economy of any of the formerly socialist countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Joining the rest of Western Europe in the EU is a big step, but what I discovered in the high Alps that day was that the invisible border between East and West has passed across tiny Slovenia four times in a single lifetime.

    • San Francisco Call (Newspaper) Vital Records extraction restoration project - currently about 121,500 persons (1869, 1875-1884). The civil records from about 1868-1969 until mid 1905 were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and are just now beginning to be replaced by this major extraction project. This website is the only place that this database appears.
This extraction project adds 13,000 or more new names (one year of vitals) to this database every six to eight weeks. It will eventually be about 400,000 persons when it is completed. It will take several more years to complete. Many residents were born in Central or Eastern Europe. San Francisco was the "New York of the West" as the major immigration port in California after the 1849 gold rush. Extractions are by Jim Faulkinbury, C.G.R.S.
