History: Local resistance, initially from non-communist nationalists, was hijacked by the Yugoslav Communist Party led by Josip Broz Tito, himself partly of Slovene origin. In 1945, after the communists emerged as victors, Slovenia became a constituent republic of the new Yugoslav federation. The ruling League of Communists of Slovenia (LCS) supported the Croats in the demand for an effectively confederal Yugoslavia during the 1960s and 1970s, although never to the point of provoking Tito into repression, as took place in Croatia in 1971. Among other things, this caution made a relatively liberal political atmosphere in Slovenia possible, culminating in a pluralist ‘Slovene Spring’ after Milan Kucan became LCS leader in 1986. The nationalist Kucan steered Slovenia towards independence following multi-party National Assembly elections in April 1990 which brought to power a six-party centre-right coalition, calling itself DEMOS, led by Premier Lozle Peterle. After 14 months, during which both Slovenia and Croatia became increasingly alienated from Belgrade, Slovenia declared independence. The central Government immediately sent in armoured convoys to take control of federal border posts and key installations in the capital Ljubljana. The army was clearly not expecting the resistance put up by well-prepared Slovene irregulars and after a few weeks of sporadic and largely inconclusive fighting, a ceasefire was reached. By October 1991, all federal military forces had left the republic, and Slovenia proclaimed its independence on 8 October. Full international recognition followed in January 1992, after which the DEMOS Government collapsed, having achieved its sole objective of securing international recognition.

History of Slovenia
History of Slovenia in the news The very first Slavic and Slovenian state emerged circa as Karantania , mainly on the territory of today's Austrian Carinthia and Slovenian Carinthia From as early as the 9th century , the lands inhabited by Karantanians , later Slovene s, had fallen under foreign rulers, including partial but cooperative control by Bavaria n dukes and the Republic of Venice. With the exception of Napoleon 's 4-year tutelage of parts of modern-day Slovenia and Croatia the " Illyrian provinces " the Slovenes, living in the provinces of Carinthia Carniola Styria , and Istria , lived under the rule of the Habsburg dynasty from the 14th century until 1918. While the elites of these regions were mostly Germanized, the peasantry strongly resisted Germanizing influences and retained their unique Slavic language and culture. After some flirtation with the Reformation in the 16th century, the region was re-Catholicized under the rule of Archduke Ferdinand of Inner Austria (r.1590-1637), who later became Emperor and pursued similar policies in the other Habsburg territories. In the 19th century, Slovene was codified by intellectuals into a literary language, and Slovene nationalist movements began to take hold, initially demanding Slovene autonomy within the framework of the

historical background

Professor Jože Jeras was designated by existing administrative director to introduce electroencephalography (and also electrocardiography) in everyday clinical practice as new diagnostic tools. He himself wrote about that time that " the birthplace of Child Neurology happened to be not on the clinical grounds but in the neurophysiology lab". In the same year (1954) the first slovene outpatient clinic (dispansery) for children and adolescents with epilepsy was established and soon after the inpatient unit specialized in neurological diseases of infants, children and adolescents was opened at Childrens Hospital Ljubljana. The head of the unit (future Neuropsychiatirc Department) became dr Ivica Tivadar, who has become also close co-worker with professor Jeras and together they wrote the book in English language: Epilepsies in Children in 1973 and got also the State Award for it. It was during this period and owing to dr Tivadar that also multidisciplinary approach and team work came into everyday practice and meetings with different other specialist's groups became common (e.g. neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, neurophysiologists etc).
In the 90-ies in accord with new trends of "children-friendly hospital concept" the Outpatient care and daily hospitalisations with more bedside functional diagnostics (electroencephalography, cardiorespiratory functional studies, sleep studies) came into power. In the 90-ies also Centre for Child & Adolescent Epilepsy was established and is headed by dr Igor M Ravnik. The aim of this Centre is comprehensive care for children and adolescents with epilepsies and constant help and informations for their parents. There are also weekly team meetings for management and care of those patients with severe forms and intractable epilepsies (and those who are future candidates for epilepsy surgery).

Ljubljana History If one is to believe the legend, then the founder of Ljubljana was the Greek prince Jason, together with his companions, the Argonauts. According to the legend, Jason and the Argonauts, while fleeing from King Aites, from whom they had stolen the golden fleece, sailed from the Black Sea up the Danube, from the Danube into the Sava, and from the Sava into the Ljubljanica. Around about here Jason encountered a terrible monster, which he fought and slew. This monster was the Ljubljana dragon, which now has its permanent abode on top of the castle tower on the Ljubljana coat of arms. At the time of Roman hegemony, from the 1st to 6th centuries A.D., the capital of contemporary Slovenia was called Emona. Subsequently Emona was frequently invaded by the barbarians and, in 452 A.D., was finally destroyed by the Huns under Attila. The Slavs began to settle in this territory in the 6th century A.D. little is known of the first Slav colonization, but ancient Slavonic graves found in different parts of Ljubljana confirm that it did take place. The first feudal rule was established in the Ljubljana region in ca. 1000 A.D. and Ljubljana became its centre. Ljubljana is first mentioned in written sources from 1144, its historical rise beginning in the 13th century when it became the Capital of the Province of Carniola. In 1335 it came under Hapsburg rule.

B.C. they fell under the Roman provinces of Pannonia and Noricum. The region was settled in the 6th cent. A.D. by the South Slavs, who set up the early Slav state of Samo, which in 788 passed to the Franks. At the division of Charlemagne's empire (843) the region passed to the dukes of Bavaria. In 1335, Carinthia and Carniola passed to the Hapsburgs. From that time until 1918 Slovenia was part of Austria and the region was largely comprised in the Austrian crownlands of Carinthia Carniola , and Styria . In 1918, Slovenia was included in the kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (called Yugoslavia after 1929), and in 1919 Austria formally ceded the region by the Treaty of Saint-Germain. In World War II Slovenia was divided (1941) among Germany, Italy, and Hungary. After the war, Slovenia was made (1945) a constituent republic of Yugoslavia and received part of the former Italian region of Venezia Giulia. In early 1990, Slovenia elected a non-Communist government and stepped up its demands for greater autonomy with the threat of possible secession. In Feb., 1991, the Slovenian parliament ruled that Slovenian law took precedence over federal law. Slovenia declared independence on June 25, and federal troops moved in, but after some fighting withdrew by July. Slovenia, along with Croatia, was recognized as an independent country by the European Community and the United Nations in 1992. Milan Kucan was elected president of Slovenia in 1990 and continued as president of the independent republic; he was reelected in Nov., 1997. In 2002, Janez Drnovsek, a Liberal Democrat, was elected president after a runoff election; Drnovsek had been the country's prime minister.

Country Profile

Flag of Slovenia Background:
The south central European country Slovenia stretches between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. In 1918 the Slovenes joined the Serbs and Croats in forming a new nation named Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, renamed to Yugoslavia in 1929. After World War II, Slovenia became a republic of the renewed Yugoslavia, which though communist, distanced itself from Moscow's rule. Dissatisfied with the exercise of power of the majority Serbs, the Slovenes succeeded in establishing their independence in 1991. Since then, Slovenia has successfully integrated into the international community and is becoming a full member of the European Union and joins NATO.

    History
All Slovene lands (duchies, counties) eventually became a part of the Habsburg feudal domain. After the mid-1400s the Habsburgs were also Holy Roman Emperors, which gave them a double jurisdiction here. For two centuries from the mid-1400s this part of Europe experienced ongoing crises: Turkish wars, peasant revolts (Slovenes were prominent among the rebels), political struggles between Emperor and nobility, as well as religious revolution, with the Habsburgs defending the Catholic Church against Protestant reformers. The general upheaval of the period resulted in economic, social, and political regression, and development in this part of Europe was retarded for two centuries. By the 1860s there were about 1.1 million Slovenes, who, because of economic pressures in rural areas, were forced to find livelihood in towns at home and abroad. Many emigrated, a good number to the United States. Those same pressures also produced new ways of dealing with economic realities at home. One was establishing cooperatives, which were widespread and highly successful before World War I. Literacy was high (80-90 percent), partly due to state educational requirements, but also because Slovenes established various institutions (Society of St. Hermagoras, Slovenska Matica, [reading societies]) to promote literacy in the national language.
