History
The early Slovenes settled in the river valleys of the Danube Basin and the eastern Alps in the 6th century. In 748, Slovenia was brought under Germanic rule, first by the Frankish empire of the Carolingians, who converted the population to Christianity, and then as part of the Holy Roman Empire in the 9th century. The Austro-German monarchy took over in the early 14th century and continued to rule (as the Austrian Habsburg Empire from 1804) right up until 1918 - with only one brief interruption. Over these six centuries, the upper classes became totally Germanised, though the peasantry retained their Slavic (later Slovenian) identity. In 1809, in a bid to isolate the Habsburg Empire from the Adriatic, Napoleon established the so-called Illyrian Provinces (Slovenia, Dalmatia and part of Croatia), making Ljubljana the capital (which it still is today). Though the Habsburgs returned in 1814, French reforms in education, law and public administration endured. The democratic revolution that swept Europe in 1848 also increased political and national consciousness among the Slovenes, and after WWI and the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Slovenia was included in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. During WWII much of Slovenia was annexed by Germany, with Italy and Hungary taking smaller shares. Slovenian partisans fought against the invaders from mountain bases. Slovenia joined the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1945.

Jewish History of Slovenia
Slovenian Slovenija, officially Republic of Slovenia (1994 estimated population 1,972,000), 7,817 square miles (20,246 square kilometers), Southern central Europe, formerly a constituent republic of Yugoslavia. Bordered by Croatia (South), the Gulf of Trieste and Italy (West), Austria (North), and Hungary (East), Slovenia is largely situated in the Karst plateau and Julian Alps. The vast majority of the population are Slovenes; there are Italian, Hungarian, Croatian, Serb, and Bosnian Muslim minorities. Slovenian, a South Slavic tongue, is the official language. Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion.
Ljubljana city (1987 estimated population 233,000) is the capital of Slovenia on a tributary of the Sava River. Located in Western central Slovenia, it is the country's largest city and an industrial and transportation center. Manufactures include textiles, chemicals, and electronic equipment. The city has a medieval fortress and several fine palaces and churches. Known as Emona in Roman times, Ljubljana passed (1277) to the Hapsburgs. In 1919 it became part of the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia). In 1946 Ljubljana became the capital of the Yugoslav constituent republic of Slovenia, which declared its independence in 1991. Other large cities are Maribor and Kranj.
Ruled by Rome from the 1st century BC, the region was settled by the South Slavs (6th century AD) and passed to the Franks (788), the dukes of Bavaria (843), and the Hapsburgs (1335), becoming part of Austria. In 1918 Slovenia was incorporated into Yugoslavia. During World War II it was divided (1941-45) among Germany, Italy, and Hungary. After the war a small part of Italy's Venezia Giulia region was added to Slovenia. In 1991 the republic proclaimed its independence after Serbia refused to agree to a looser Yugoslav confederation. Fighting broke out briefly when the Yugoslav army attempted to retake border posts seized by Slovenia, but a cease-fire led to the withdrawal of Yugoslav forces. Milan Kuccaronan, first elected in 1990, is president of Slovenia.

It Catholicism was Roman (not Eastern) and priests played an important political role in this country without an established aristocracy or merchant class. During the period of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Slovenia was part of the Austrian side of the dual monarchy and when it collapsed as a consequence of World War I, Slovenia, together with Serbs and Croats, came together as "The National Council" out of which Yugoslavia would later be born. Within Yugoslavia, Slovenia held something of an anomalous position since its language was different and the population was, on the whole, better educated and more advanced industrially than other parts of the country. After the brief break-up of Yugoslavia perpetrated by the Nazis, Tito reconstituted the country with Slovenia as a constituent `republic.' In 1990, a decade after Tito's death, Communism fell and Slovenia wasted little time in proclaiming its first true independence in 1991. With strong economic links to Austria, Italy, and Hungary, Slovenia has remained prosperous and secure, with little involvement in the troubles to the south.

    History
In ancient times the region was inhabited by the Illyrian and Celtic tribes. In the 1st cent. B.C. they fell under the Roman provinces of Pannonia and Noricum. The region was settled in the 6th cent. A.D. by the South Slavs, who set up the early Slav state of Samo, which in 788 passed to the Franks. At the division of Charlemagne's empire (843) the region passed to the dukes of Bavaria. In 1335, Carinthia and Carniola passed to the Hapsburgs. From that time until 1918 Slovenia was part of Austria and the region was largely comprised in the Austrian crownlands of Carinthia Carniola , and Styria . In 1918, Slovenia was included in the kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (called Yugoslavia after 1929), and in 1919 Austria formally ceded the region by the Treaty of Saint-Germain.
