The central part enjoys a temperate subalpine climate with quite hot summers (average hot month temperatures are around 18-20 °C), well sunshine records and an average of 120 rainy days (annual precipitation 1300-1600 mm). The coastal part of Slovenia has a mediterranean climate with warm to hot and dry summers, mild winters, abundant sunshine and the annual precipitation amounts to 1100-1300 mm. The eastern part of Slovenia is characterised by a moderate continental climate with average air temperatures from 8-10 °C and an annual temperature around 23 °C. In this part of Slovenia areas with less than 900 mm annual precipitation are situated.

The situation in Slovenia's map society is very similar to the period from 1998-2000. While a national group for map curators still does not exist, organizations dealing with different aspects of mapping such as the National and University Library, the Map Collection in the Department of Geography, and the Geodetic Survey etc. have improved their collaborative activities. Map Collection, National and University Library
Map Collection of Department of Geography, University of Ljubljana

Work in this map collection has been focusing on the contemporary cartography used for student education. Geodetic Survey of Slovenia and Geodetic Institute
The main activities and products of Geodetic Survey of Slovenia and Geodetic Institute are still topographic and land cadastral maps, town maps and other thematic maps, data collection as well as database integration for the GIS. The Surveying and Mapping Authority of the Republic of Slovenia (SMA)
The SMA has been continuing the project of converting all 58 sheets of the TK50 analogue reproduction originals, into a digital form for all requirement types. The project is expected to be completed during 2004. In addition, modernization of General maps PK 250, PK 500, PK 750, PK 1000 has also been underway. The final outcome of this project will be modification of the map's content and transformation of the content into a digital form. Importantly, the Scientific Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, produced for the SMA a digital elevation model applying radar interferometry. It was the first application of radar interferometry in Slovenia.

National progress report of Slovenia 1998-2000
    Map collections and cartographic projects
The Slovenian map community is very small, especially the groups involved professionally with maps. There is no national group of map curators, but there are 3 overall groups of organizations dealing with different aspects of mapping:
    • Libraries and museums (Map Collection, National and University Library of Slovenia (NUL), Map Collection of Department of Geography, University of Ljubljana, Map Collection, Museum of Geography) Geodetic Survey of Slovenia (Geodetski zavod Slovenije) and Institute for Geodesy and Photogrammetry, Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering (Inštitut za geodezijo in fotogrametrijo pri FAGG) Anton Melik Geographical Institute and Milko Kos Historical Institute, Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts
Although co-operation within each group is strong, it is weaker between each of the three groups. The Map Collection of NUL is the most important and best-funded map collection in the country. As part of the National Library, it oversees acquisitions, cataloguing, preservation and access to the cartographic publications in Slovenia. In addition the Map Collection of NUL is involved in educational programs in map curatorship and novel trends in data analysis. The main activities and publications of Geodetic Survey of Slovenia are: field survey for topographic and land cadastral maps, aerial surveys, metric terrestrial photography, photographic reproduction works, stereophotogrammetric map restitution purposes using computer supported analogue and analytical photogrammetric instruments, producing of digital orthophoto maps including DTM and hard copy output, producing and updating topographical maps in mid-scales of 1:5,000, 1:25,000 and 1:50,000, publishing town maps and other thematic maps, data collection and database integration for the GIS.

    Introduction
Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies, Austria's 1955 State Treaty declared the country "permanently neutral" as a condition of Soviet military withdrawal. Neutrality, once ingrained as part of the Austrian cultural identity, has been called into question since the Soviet collapse and Austria's increasingly prominent role in European affairs. A prosperous country, Austria joined the European Union in 1995 and the euro monetary system in 1999.

The Slovene lands were part of the Holy Roman Empire and Austria until 1918 when the Slovenes joined the Serbs and Croats in forming a new nation, renamed Yugoslavia in 1929. After World War II, Slovenia became a republic of the renewed Yugoslavia, which though Communist, distanced itself from Moscow's rule. Dissatisfied with the exercise of power of the majority Serbs, the Slovenes succeeded in establishing their independence in 1991 after a short 10-day war. Historical ties to Western Europe, a strong economy, and a stable democracy have assisted in Slovenia's transformation to a modern state. In December 2002, Slovenia received an invitation to join NATO, and it is scheduled to accede to the EU along with nine other states on 1 May 2004. In a March 2003 referendum on NATO and EU membership, Slovenes voted 90% in favor of joining the EU and 66% in favor of joining NATO.

... Mediterranean Guide Slovenia: Overview Slovenia, a green and diverse country between the Alps and the Mediterranean, boasts all the beauties of the OLD WORLD. In Slovenia you can ski in the morning and surrender yourself to the luxury of the Adriatic Sea in the afternoon. You can breakfast with herdsmen on the mountain meadow and end your evening in a richly stocked wine cellar at the edge of the Pannonian plain. You can travel through time all day in museums, castles, churches, and art galleries and enjoy the evening out in one of the Europe?s best casinos. Today you can delight in the ethnographic sights, tastes, and sounds of a traditional village celebration, and tomorrow you can satisfy your cultural cravings at a world- class cultural event.
Slovenia?s cities and towns offer more than history, monuments, churches, museums, and restaurants with delicious food and drink; they are also the venues of numerous events, from minor festivities only found on the local calendar to traditional world-renowned events. Our cities and towns not only offer the ancient cores where their life began millenniums ago but also serve as starting points for excursions into the immediate and more distant surroundings where many historical and natural sites wait to be discovered.
