Culture - a basis for Slovene identity
In the year 2000, Slovenia celebrated two important anniversaries: 450 years since Primo¾ Trubar published the first Slovene book , and 200 years since the birth of France Pre¹eren , the most important Slovene poet. The former anniversary is linked to the foundations of the Slovene literary language and the latter to a time of Slovene national and cultural revival, and with the appearance of one of our most important national political programmes. The arts and culture have a special place in the history of the Slovene nation. With them Slovenes, as did other Central European nations, substituted to a large extent for the non-existence of their own state and political institutions, and it is through their language and culture that for centuries Slovenes managed to preserve their identity as a nation.

Ljubljana Culture Ljubljana is a dynamic European city lying between the Alps and the Mediterranean.
It is no coincidence that the two longest thoroughfares in Ljubljana bear the names of Vienna and Trieste. Where the two intersect, rich traditional intermingles with the lively ferment of new ideas - a city of warm and welcoming people.
Ljubljana is situated at an altitude of 298 m above sea level, while the hilltop castle in the centre of the city stands at an altitude of 366 m.
Ljubljana is one of the special places from where you can take your day off either skiing in the mountains or swimming in the sea.
Presernov trg (Preseren Square)
Stolnica (Cathedral)
The Ljubljana church which boatmen and fishermen dedicated to their patron St Nicholas, probably stood on the site of the present cathedral as early as the 13th century. The original Romanesque church was later rebuilt many times. The contemporary church, with frescoes by Giulio Quaglio and built to the plans of the Roman Jesuit Andrea Pozzo, was constructed between 1701 and 1708. The cupola was added later by the native architect Gregor Maeek, and painted by Matej Langus in 1843-44. To the right of the main entrance is a Gothic capital with a head of Christ on the external wall. As for the internal furnishings, there remains a mid-15th century Gothic Pieta.

Arts and Culture In modern times the earliest signs of the Slovenian spirit have surfaced in the field of culture. Ever since the poetry of France Preseren, culture has formed the heart of our national being. Urban culture has developed in Slovenia over the last two centuries, which has also seen the gradual evolvement of fundamental institutions such as National Museum , and the Slovenian Philharmonics Nowadays Slovenia has a myriad of theatres, cinemas, libraries and educational facilities and is well known abroad by its current cultural export. The band Laibach is absolutely pivotal in the field of music . Their early industrial sound from the 1980s still has a cult following around the world. Young composer Mitja Vrhovnik Smrekar is establishing himself as a very reputable writer of theatre music. Slovene literature and poetry is mostly very traditional, but international translations of the literary works of Drago Jancar Tomaz Salamun and Ales Debeljak prove that even the smallest cultures can create work of high quality and also contribute to the most current global literary tendencies. The history of our country's visual arts is rich with important artists. Recently the painters of the group

    Flag of Slovenia Background:
The south central European country Slovenia stretches between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. In 1918 the Slovenes joined the Serbs and Croats in forming a new nation named Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, renamed to Yugoslavia in 1929. After World War II, Slovenia became a republic of the renewed Yugoslavia, which though communist, distanced itself from Moscow's rule. Dissatisfied with the exercise of power of the majority Serbs, the Slovenes succeeded in establishing their independence in 1991. Since then, Slovenia has successfully integrated into the international community and is becoming a full member of the European Union and joins NATO.
