Editorial New cabinet fields best candidates in Slovak history
THE INCOMING government that expects to be confirmed October 16 is the best that Slovakia has had since its 1993 independence. It's so good that, after years of Vladimír Meèiar kleptocracy and MikulᚠDzurinda stalemate, it's almost an anticlimax. The reasons that the cabinet is the best possible are three. First, it combines four parties with similar centre-right programmes that have recognised the need to launch pension, school and health-care reform, or in other words to rid these money-devouring sectors of the last vestiges of communism. Second, three of the four government parties have been credited with turning around Slovakia's international isolation and making it a top contender for European Union and Nato entry. Finally, the cabinet does not involve the Smer party of Robert Fico, whose loudmouth populism and dubious financing had promised a return to "non-transparent" (ie beholden to your sponsors) politics. Many of the accolades to the incoming cabinet can be reduced to phrases such as "stability" and "continuity", expressing comfort that statesman like PM MikulᚠDzurinda, new Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš and Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan are hanging around for another kick at the can.

Kosice, Slovakia
Welcome to Kosice , the metropolis of Eastern Slovakia. Lying in the valley of the River Hornad in the basin that shares its name, Kosice is a regional administrative centre and Eastern Slovakia's hub of industry, commerce, science and culture. The country's second largest city, Kosice curently has a population of more than 250,000 inhabitants. As the Regional Administrative Center for Kosice County, Kosice provides government services to an area encompassing 6 753 sq. kilometers and serves over 766 000 people. Kosice is a city with an eventful and illustrious past, its earliest recorded mention dating from 1230, when it is referred to as "Villa Cassa". The coat of arms is the oldest in Europe, a fact attested to by a letter dated 1369. The city's historic sights - from various eras - are concentrated in the historic centre, which is an Urban Heritage Area. The reconstructed main street, lined by burgher houses and palaces, offers visitors a pleasant stroll and is also the venue for major events in the life of the city.

A cast of the Neanderthal man's skull was found in Ganovce in the North-eastern Slovakia and a skull of a Neanderthal woman was discovered in the deposits of the Vah River. Numerous archaeological finds, settlements and various artifacts document the cheque red history of the Slovak territory during the Stone Age. Later, in the Bronze Age, current Slovak territory was an important crossroads for different ethnical groups and tribes, mainly the Celts, the Romans and Germanic tribes. West-Slavic tribes arrived in the West-Carpathian's and adjacent lowlands during the 5th and 6th centuries. Shortly afterwards the Western Slavs established their first state-like formation after their victory over the nomadic tribe of Avars. A Frankish merchant named Samo led Slavic warriors. He became their king until his death in 658. At the end of the 8th century, two powerful Slavic rulers founded their principalities on the current Slovak territory and neighbouring areas. Pribina ruled the Principality of contemporary Nitra and Mojmir ruled the Moravian principality. In the period between 813 and 833 AD, these two principalities merged together under dramatic circumstances thus laying the foundation of the Great Moravian Empire, which at that time were the main rival and ally of the Franki Empire.

General Collections
The Library of Congress is considered to be the best repository of Czech and Slovak books, periodicals and other reading materials outside the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The monographs and bound periodicals relating to the culture of the Czechs and Slovaks amount to ca. 115,000 items, with the yearly acquisitions of monographs averaging ca. 1,500 over the last 10 years. The LC has about 2,000 Czech and Slovak periodicals, of which ca. 600 are currently received, and more than 170 Czech and Slovak newspapers, with 14 titles currently received. It is estimated that about 80 percent of all these materials are in Czech or Slovak, English being the predominant language of the rest. While the Czech and Slovak collections in the LC are generally good, they are especially strong for books and periodicals published after 1945. This is due to the fact that after 1945 monographs and periodicals published in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech and Slovak Republics) were purchased by LC on the basis of a blanket order. The period of the 1920s and 1930s (the era of the First Czechoslovak Republic) is also well represented. Some of the holdings of works from this period have been acquired retrospectively, with stress being laid on volumes showing the excellent Czechoslovak craftsmanship in book design and printing.

Kosice - Brief history
Kosice, Slovak republic's second-largest city, prides itself on its long history of many cultures and religious faiths. Among others, Slovak, Hungarian, Ukranian, Polish and Romani peoples have left their mark, not least in the form of Roman Catholic, Greek and Russian Orthodox and Jewish houses of worship. The first written mention of Kosice is in a document dated 1230, a contract for sale of land. Kosice is reffered to as "Villa Kasa". Armorial warrants are historical gems in the City Archive. The most modest-looking but most valuable of the four armorial warrants issued to the town of Kosice is the first, dated 7th May 1369. Since 1994 this date has been celebrated as "Kosice Day". This warrant is an item of national cultural heritage as the oldest known granting by letters-patent of a coat of arms to a legal entity (a town) in Europe. Granted here was purely the shield with bearings as seen on the warrant on the picture dated 1423, where a half-angel appears as shield-bearer. Through a fourth royal letters-patent dated 1502, Kosice became the first city in Hungary to complete the process a gaining a full city coat of arms, which has been used unaltered form for almost half a millennium up to the present.

Flag of Slovakia Background:
Formerly a part of Austria-Hungary, the Slovaks joined with the closely related regions of Bohemia and neighbouring Moravia to form Czechoslovakia in 1918. In the chaos of World War II Slovakia became a separate republic in 1938, tightly controlled by Germany. Post World War II in 1945 with the Warsaw Pact Czechoslovakia had become a communist state within a Soviet-ruled Eastern Europe. With the collapse of the Soviet influence in 1989 Czechoslovakia became a sovereign state.
Historic, political, and geographic factors have caused Slovakia to experience more difficulty than some of its Central European neighbors in developing from a centrally planned economy to a modern market economy.
In 1993 the Slovaks and the Czechs agreed to separate peacefully. In 2004 Slovakia became a member of the European Union and the NATO.

The Homeland of Our Ancestors
This history was written in 1946 for the National Slovak Society Convention and should be read with that post-war perspective in mind. History tells us that Valentinian was the last Roman emperor who could claim sovereignty over Slovakian soil, upon whose death in the year 375 began the Migration of Nations. The Migration of Nations caused Slavs to appear in Slovakia. Probably they·were pressed there by the Uralo-Altaic Avars. According to an ancient historical tradition, a Frank, named Samo, united the Slavs in the 7th century for an attack against the Avars and thus checked their advance. After Charlemagne had vanquished· the Avars in 796, they disappear from history. A few decades afterwards the kingdom of Moravia was organized on the territory of present-day Western Slovakia and Moravia. The first ruler, Mojmir I, adopted Christianity. His successor, Rostislav, was in direct diplomatic contact with the Byzantine Empire, and in the ninth century called the Greek priests Cyril and Methodius to come to his country to propagate Christianity. They introduced Slavic script and translated the Gospels.

http://home.nextra.sk/averill/bapt.html
The History of Baptists in Slovakia The Reformation and persecution in Slovakia The first reports of Luther's activities and his writings were brought into Slovakia by merchants just after his public debate with Johann Eck in 1519. His first supporters were among German burghers in the larger towns of central and eastern Slovakia. In 1521, T. Preisner of Lubica read Luther's Ninety-five Theses from his pulpit. The ecclesiastical hierarchy and the lesser Hungarian nobles approved a decree in April 1523 that "all Lutherans and those favoring them...should have their property confiscated and themselves punished with death as heretics and foes of the Holy Saint Virgin Mary." However, the Turkish victory at the battle of Mohács, August, 29, 1526, in which the Hungarians lost their army, their king, two archbishops and five bishops made enforcement of this decree difficult. In the 1530's and 1540's, Lutheranism was adopted by many of the towns of central and eastern Slovakia. During this same period, Anabaptists began to appear in Slovakia. First in the mining towns of central Slovakia and in the towns of Spiš (Levoèa, Spišska Nová Ves, Švedlár). One of the best known Anabaptist preachers in Slovakia was Andrej Fischer who was executed for his faith by being thrown from the castle of Krásna Hôrka in 1539. In 1547, Anabaptists that were expelled from Bohemia began to settle in western Slovakia. Soon their numbers swelled to several thousand. They were given the name "Habáni" taken from the German word "haushaben." They led an autonomous existence led by the "Servant of the Word." They were masters in making pottery, built water systems, mills and excelled in the arts of medicine.

Customer Reviews One has to hand it to Stanislav Kirschbaum; He has successfully written the first all-encompassing history of Slovakia in the post- communist era, no small task when Slovak history is as complex and multi-faceted as it is. The scope of his research and factual grounding is impressive, and his writing stlye is entertaining enough, for a history text. However, it is very easy to tell that Mr. Kirschbaum has an extremely biased pro-Slovak view of the nations history, especially as regards Slovakia's involvement in World War II and the Holocaust. Astute readers will pick up references to a Jozef Kirschbaum who was, for a short time during the war, a government official in Slovakia; This Jozef Kirschbaum is presumably a close relative of the author's, due to the fact that the author has edited a book in memory of Jozef Kirschbaum. Still, all in all, an indispensable book for students of Slovak history. In the 14th and 15th centuries when as wanderers from Lower Egypt they first appeared in Europe, they were named in some countries according to the region from which they had apparently come (Egyptianos, Gitanos, Gypsies), in the Balkans they were taken for the Manichean sect Athiganoi - Atsiganos, from which they inherited another group of names ( Zingaro, Tsigane, Zigeuner, Cigani). The bearers themselves of these names remained for the most part indifferent to them, preferring their own name, Romane. This is their official title as approved by the International Romani Union, a representative organization founded in London in 1971. The predecessors of today's Romanes left lands in India in the 9th and 10th century. Individual groups traveled through Persia, Armenia and Asia Minor and the 11th century appeared on the European continent. The majority of this nomands traveled through the Balkans and on through Danube Basin, which explains the high concentration of Romanes in these regions to this day. The earliest note of their presence in Slovakia is from the year 1322 in the area of Spišská Nová Ves, and in the years 1377 and 1381 they were first noted in Eastern Slovakia in Zemplinska Župa. Most groups passed through southwestern Slovakia and Czech lands on their way to western and southwestern Europe. One such group, under the leadership of King Sindel, and Dukes Panuel, Michal and Ondrej, passed through Slovakia in 1417, through Košice, Levice and Bratislava and on westward. Another group under Duke Ladislav, showed a letter of protection from king Zigmunnd of Luxembourg on April 17, 1423 at Spišský Hrad.

Located in the heart of the European continent, Slovakia is a land of approximately 19,000 square miles with about 5.2 million inhabitants. Its natural boundaries are the Tatry or Carpathian Mountains (with a high peak, Gerlach, of 2655 meters) on the north and the Danube River on the south. The Tatras are a skier's paradise. The beauty found in these mountains, along with Slovakia's landscapes and countryside, is awesome. There are several hundred mineral and thermal springs and more than twenty spas in Slovakia. Thousands of visitors from around the world each year utilize these resources for various health ailments. Also, dozens of castles dot the country. Once used as residences for royalty, then later as places of refuge in times of war, many of them are today used as educational, social, or recreation centers, house museums, and gift shops. They are a main attraction for tourists. Many of the castles, and especially the century-old churches, have a breathtaking Gothic architecture which compares to no other. One will find the churches' interiors lined in marble and trimmed in gold, all glistening through crystal chandeliers. The cultural and artistic currents found in Slovakia have strongly prevailed through the centuries to the present day. The people are known for their wood-carving, ceramics, crystal and glass works, and beautifully handcrafted embroidered articles such as tablecloths, napkins, doilies, etc.

History: Over the course of the 10th century, these tribes gradually settled in the region and created an embryonic Hungarian state which adopted many of the systems and structures of its predecessor. Slovakia’s mineral deposits made it the richest part of the Hungarian empire and the region prospered, especially during the 13th and 14th centuries. This period came to an end after the Hungarians suffered a major military defeat in 1526 at the Battle of Mohacs at the hands of the Ottoman Turks, who promptly dismembered the empire. Slovakia, however, was able to resist the Ottoman occupation and allied itself with the Austrian Hapsburg monarchy. Between 1526 and 1784, the Slovak capital Bratislava (known to the Hapsburgs as Pressburg) was nominated capital of the ‘Kingdom of Hungary’ and over a dozen Hapsburg monarchs were crowned in the city. A dark period followed, in which the country was effectively under German control. In 1948 the Slovaks voted for a democratic government which was aborted when Slovakia was grouped together with its Czech neighbours after the Yalta agreement between the world’s superpowers. Another defining moment took place in 1968 when Alexander Dubcek (then leader of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia) introduced the policy known as ‘socialism with a human face’ that ended with the Prague Spring and the crushing of the reformist movement by the Soviet army. The period of ‘normalisation’ under democratic socialism finally gave way to democratic reforms in November 1989.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Bratislava - History BASIC HISTORICAL INFORMATION Bratislava is a city with a rich history dating back to the Early Stone Age when hunter settlements were established in the area. People in the Late Stone Age, 3500 B. C., also recognized the advantages of this area and established several settlements in areas of strategic importance. Since this period the Bratislava region has been continuously settled.
The Romans played an important role in the history of our town in the early part of the last millennium, when the Danube River became the frontier of the Roman Empire. Close to the river the Romans built a fortified military camp with watchtowers and civic buildings, which were part of the defensive boundary Limes Romanus. By the end of the migration of nations, in the 5th century, the Slavs had arrived in the Bratislava region. By the end of the 8th and beginning of the 9th century, definite boundaries between the Slav and German worlds began to be defined. The development of crafts among the Slavs, increasing social stratification, the establishment of tribal principalities and their mutual struggles led to the establishment of the first independent state, Great Moravia, in the first third of the 9th century. On Bratislava castle hill and at Devin important castle settlements were built. The first preserved written reference to Bratislava
