    History
Slavic tribes occupied what is now Slovakia in the 5th century AD. In 833, the prince of Moravia captured Nitra and formed the Great Moravian Empire, which included all of present Central and West Slovakia, the Czech Republic and parts of neighbouring Poland, Hungary and Germany. The empire converted to Christianity with the arrival of the Thessaloniki brothers and missionaries, Cyril and Methodius, in 863. In 907, the Great Moravian Empire collapsed as a result of the political intrigues of its rulers and invasion by Hungary. By 1018 the whole of Slovakia was annexed by Hungary and remained so for the next 900 years, although the Spis region of East Slovakia belonged to Poland from 1412 to 1772. After a Tatar invasion in the 13th century, the Hungarian king invited Saxon Germans to settle the depopulated north-eastern borderlands. When the Turks overran Hungary in the early 16th century, the Hungarian capital moved from Buda to Bratislava. Only in 1686 was the Ottoman presence finally driven south of the Danube. The formation of the dual Austro-Hungarian monarchy in 1867 gave Hungary autonomy in domestic matters and a policy of enforced Magyarisation ('Hungarianisation') was instituted in Slovakia between 1868 and 1918.

    Slovak Republic Eurofax reports
Slovensky skauting is the National Scout and Guide Organization operating in the Slovak Republic. With 4,510 Scout members (and 3,000 girls), Slovensky skauting is the largest youth organization in Slovakia. Scouting in Slovakia started in 1913 in connection with Hungarian Scouting as Slovakia was, at the time, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. On 1 January 1993, Czechoslovakia split into two countries - the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. Since then, Slovensky skauting has started its independent development. Slovensky skauting is working hard to train its leaders and to update its youth programme. Several training courses have taken place over the last two years and a Strategic Planning Seminar is being organized with the support of the European Scout Office. Reprinted from Eurofax 65 , February 1998.

The area, part of the 9th-century empire of Moravia, was primarily under Hungarian rule from the 10th century In 1526 Slovakia and Western Hungary passed to the Hapsburgs after Louis II of Hungary was defeated by the Ottomans. In the 19th century there was a Slovak national revival, in part in reaction to the Germanization of Slovakia in the previous century. After World War I, Slovakia became (1918) part of the new nation of Czechoslovakia. The minority Slovaks, however, campaigned for greater autonomy from the Czech-dominated, centralized state. In 1938 Slovakia was made an autonomous unit by the Munich Pact and later (1939-45) was a German puppet state. The Czechoslovak state was reestablished in 1945, and after 1948 the Communist government curtailed Slovak autonomy until 1969, when Slovakia was granted autonomy over local affairs.

      The Slovaks in History
A.D. In the 9th cent. Slovakia formed part of the great empire of Moravia , under whose rulers Christianity was introduced by Saints Cyril and Methodius . From the Magyar conquest of Slovakia early in the 10th cent. until 1918, Slovakia was generally under Hungarian rule. German and Jewish settlements in Slovakian cities date from the Middle Ages; most of the Slovaks remained peasants in the countryside, although some became burghers. Czech-Slovak contacts, broken after the demise of the Moravian empire, were restored by the 14th cent.; and the 15th-century Hussite movement in Bohemia enjoyed influence in Slovakia. After the Ottoman Turkish victory at in 1526 over Louis II of Hungary and Bohemia, Slovakia, along with western Hungary, fell under Hapsburg rule. It thus escaped Turkish domination but became a stronghold of the great Hungarian nobles, who owned most of the land and treated the Slovaks with contempt. Slovakia, however, played an important political role, with Bratislava serving as the Hapsburg capital, until all of Hungary was finally freed from the Turks in the late 17th cent. Slovakia also enjoyed more religious toleration than much of the Hapsburg empire, and Protestantism thrived.

Artefacts were discovered dating back to the Paleolithic Stage, include the famous Cranium Mold of a Neanderthal (c. 200,000 BCE), discovered near Gánovec, a village in Northern Slovakia. Slovakia History and Culture
History Slovakia existed as part of Hungary from the beginning of the 10th century until 1918, when it united with the Czech lands of Bohemia and Moravia, in addition to a small part of Silesia, to form Czechoslovakia. In 1939, shortly before the start of World War II, Slovakia declared its independence under pressure from German dictator Adolf Hitler, but in 1945 it was reunited with the rest of Czechoslovakia. From 1948 until 1989 Czechoslovakia was ruled by a Soviet-style Communist regime. During the yaer 1993 the country broke apart, and Slovakia became independent. Culture The development of Slovak culture reflects the country's rich folk tradition, in addition to the influence of broader European trends.
