ARTICLE Garry Gillard Mind and Culture: Freud and Slovakia M/C: A Journal of Media and Culture 3.2 (2000) 'culture' 'Let me give you an analogy; analogies, it is true, decide nothing, but they can make one feel more at home.'
Sigmund Freud New Introductory Lectures This paper emerged from a larger study of Freud's view of culture, which used elements of Freud's own way of proceeding to mount a critique of the elaboration of that view. It is proposed here that the use of analogy is foundational to Freud's procedure in building his model of the mind, rather than just a temporary means to an end, and, crucially, that Freud is himself unaware of both the necessity of the analogical move and also of his desire for it. The creation of the concept of the Freudian psyche is a rhetorical tour de force , a structure made of figures of speech, the chief among which is the analogy. Freud constructs an analogy between culture and mind: what is left of his theory of both if this rhetorical connexion is removed? Bit 1 In the opening pages of one of his last works Freud considers the problem of the interpretation of culture, and he concludes that there too it is a question of getting the patient on the couch: '... one is justified [he writes] in attempting to discover a psychoanalytic that is, a genetic explanation ...' in that psychoanalysis is a method of explaining the origins of present condition of such things as states of mind, to which culture more generally is analogous (

( Last Update: 2003/08/26) I. Review of the Bilateral Political Relations
On October 6, 1949 China and the former Czechoslovakia established diplomatic relations. When the Slovak Republic became an independent sovereign state on January 1, 1993, China extended its recognition and set up diplomatic relations with it at ambassadorial level on the same day. And all the treaties and agreements concluded between China and the former Czech and Slovak Federal Republic remain effective so far as the Slovak Republic is concerned. In recent years, there has been smooth development in the relations between the two countries with personnel exchanges at all levels increased and the area of cooperation expanded.
In February 1994, Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar of the Slovak Government visited China at the invitation of Premier Li Peng. In August 1994, the vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Ye Xuanping paid a visit to Slovakia. In October 1994, Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo went to Slovakia for consultation between the foreign ministries of the two countries, and with Secretary of State of the Slovak Foreign Ministry, signed the protocol on cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries.

88. Why Slovak Folklore Survived

SLOVAK
VERSION
Introduction Background Overview Gala Evening History Historical Book Tickets W hy has Slovak Folklore survived in Canada
S lovak Folklore will be celebrating its 75 th Anniversary this year, with the big Gala Evening on May 9, 1998 and yet many Slovak Canadians feel that undue respect and attention is being given to this form of expression when other forms such as Theatre, Poetry reading, Classical and Choir Music have had even longer history in Canada. E ven though the first Slovak folklore group has had its beginning in the 1920’s in Thunder Bay, it came into its own at the start of the 1950s and has not looked back. Yes, there have been lean years where fewer numbers of Slovak Folklore groups existed, but overall, Canadians have been very receptive to Slovak Folklore. Today we Slovak Canadians can be very proud of our existing folklore troupes; be it in Montreal, Toronto, Welland, Windsor or Winnipeg. They are making all of us proud by spreading goodwill and a positive image to help differentiate Slovaks from the other 100+ Nationals living in Canada. C anada, as a country, is very proud of its multicultural image both at home and abroad. This multicultural image is used as a selling point to new immigrants, it is used in tourism, and it serves to make Canada one of the top countries of choice in the world for anyone seeking a better life. Slovak folklore troupes have participated and sponsored in hundreds of festivals throughout the years and have kept the name Slovakia alive even when politically there was no country.

Toruñ in UNESCO Twin Cieties of Toruñ Èadca 1996 Cadca is located in north-western Slovakia, several kilometres from intersection of Polish, Czech and Slovakian borders, surrounded by Kysuckie Beskid Mountains and Western Beskid Mounatins, Jaworniki Mountains, Kysucka Upland and Turzowska Upland. The city is inhabited by circa 27,000 persons and is the capital of mountainous Kysuce region. Receiving city rights and a privilege to organise four fairs in a year from empress Maria Teresa in 1778 and construction of a railway 100 years later facilitated rapid development of Cadca which became a railway junction and a timber industry centre in the second half of XIX century. Citizens of Cadca consider the upraising against Hungarians in 1848, when the city was the seat of the Slowak National Council, to be the most important event in its history. A late-baroque church of st. Bartholomew is an interesting monument.

APPENDIX I ... BIBLIOGRAPHY The religious history of Greek Catholics in Slovakia is closely related to that of the Ruthenians . Indeed, for centuries their histories were intertwined, since the 1646 Union of Uzhorod was virtually unanimously accepted in the territory that is now eastern Slovakia. In the United States and most other areas, the Slovaks are not distinguished from the Ruthenians. They have a separate diocese, however, in Canada, at present presided over by Bishop John Pazak (Eparchy of Sts. Cyril and Methodius of Toronto, 223 Carlton Road, Unionville, Ontario L3R 2L8). There are seven parishes for about 1,500 Slovak Catholics in Canada. LOCATION: Slovakia, Canada

George Kovtun,
Czech/Slovak Area Specialist
General Collections
The Library of Congress is considered to be the best repository of Czech and Slovak books, periodicals and other reading materials outside the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The monographs and bound periodicals relating to the culture of the Czechs and Slovaks amount to ca. 115,000 items, with the yearly acquisitions of monographs averaging ca. 1,500 over the last 10 years. The LC has about 2,000 Czech and Slovak periodicals, of which ca. 600 are currently received, and more than 170 Czech and Slovak newspapers, with 14 titles currently received. It is estimated that about 80 percent of all these materials are in Czech or Slovak, English being the predominant language of the rest. While the Czech and Slovak collections in the LC are generally good, they are especially strong for books and periodicals published after 1945. This is due to the fact that after 1945 monographs and periodicals published in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech and Slovak Republics) were purchased by LC on the basis of a blanket order. The period of the 1920s and 1930s (the era of the First Czechoslovak Republic) is also well represented. Some of the holdings of works from this period have been acquired retrospectively, with stress being laid on volumes showing the excellent Czechoslovak craftsmanship in book design and printing.
