62. Culture Of Peace
man s dream A World of Peace. By Massimo Trombin Magda Balentova Directorsof the IRFF project The culture of Peace slovakia 1999.
http://www.irff-europe.org/project/culturepeace.htm
    - Culture of Peace Peace is in our hands
"Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defence of peace must be constructed." This principle, found in the preamble of the UNESCO constitution, was the motto of the first day of the IRFF international volunteers camp. The theme of the camp was"The Culture of Peace" and it was organised in Slovakia from 16th to 25th July 1999.
26 volunteers representing 12 different countries and three continents gathered in the historical village of "S ahy" situated on the Slovak - Hungarian border. One of the purposes of their gathering was to join local professionals in the archaeological research of a medieval monastery located in Sahy.
This was also a pilot project for IRFF, an event with emphasis on the Friendship characteristics of IRFF. The cultural element of the program and the project "Culture of Peace" fulfilled the goal of more emphasis of cross-cultural friendship. The IRFF staff, together with the participants, can be called a laboratory for an experiment in friendships across cultural boundaries, and from the outcome we can safely say that it was a success.
The days of the camp where divided into several sections. The first two days focused on orientation and education, after which followed 5 days of work, and the last day was reserved for reflection and the closing ceremony. On Friday evening at the opening ceremony, welcoming remarks and a presentation on the topics of the history of the Sahy area and UNESCO works in Slovakia was given by Ms Dvorakova. She is the Vice-director of the Slovak National Institute of Monuments Preservation and a member of the UNESCO National Commission in Slovakia.

From the east, the Kosice Hollow is bordered by the Slanske Vrchy Hills. To the southwest near the Hungarian border, the renowned Slovensky Kras Hills are situated. The northwestern areas at the foothills of the Slovak Ore Mountains have a temperate mountain climate. The present cathedral stands on a site formerly occupied by a parish church, which was destroyed by fire about 1370. The patrons of the church included St. Elizabeth. The construction of St. Elizabeth's Cathedral began in approximately 1378 and was carried out in several stages: The representative building of the State Theatre is situated in the city centre. It was built in a new- baroque style during the years 1879-1899, according to the projects of

One of approximately twenty doctoral programs in Slavic Studies in the U.S., the Slavic Department at the University of Pittsburgh has six full-time tenured faculty members . In both the undergraduate and graduate areas, the Slavic Department teaches courses in Polish, Serbian, Slovak, and Ukrainian, but remains primarily Russian-oriented, this fact reflecting, on the undergraduate level, the interests of most potential majors and, on the graduate level, the current needs of the field. At present the undergraduate major is offered only in Russian, with the possibility of a self-designed major in Polish and Slovak. The Russian major stresses language proficiency, the study of major periods and authors, and the culture of the former Soviet Union. The M.A. program in literature and culture, together with a Russian and East European studies certificate, is suitable for students planning careers in government, business, or teaching. The Ph.D. in literature and culture is offered only in Russian. Owing to an exceptionally strong auxiliary program in Russian and East European Studies , under the aegis of the University Center for International Studies , the University of Pittsburgh has a program of faculty and student contacts and exchanges with Eastern Europe, including Russia, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Bulgaria.

    The Croatian Minority in Slovakia
    Croatian-Slovak Ties
    The Bratislava Region
The Croatian population could be divided into three territorial regions: the region of Zahoria to Skalice; the Danube river region - the environs of Bratislava, Cunovo, Jarovce and the region of the Little Carpathians. This territorial division in the above mentioned regions is highlighted by different dialects of the individual Croatian settlements in Slovakia. Croats in Devínska Nova Ves (Cr. Devinsko Novo Selo) are Cakavian speakers, and in Chorvátsky Grob (Cr. Hrvatski Grob) At the end of the sixteenth and during the seventeenth centuries, the Croats were spread out so that specific Croatian settlements became Slovakized or Magyarized. What we want to emphasize now with the following historical piece is the arrival of Croats to Devín in the middle of the sixteenth century. Devín, especially Devínska Nova Ves was distinguished with a dense settling of Croats who came from but the immigration from Burgenland, Hungary and Moravia. The work of the Croatian priests had an influence in preserving the Croatian language, Croatian national consciousness and cultural practices: customs, traditional costumes, dances and songs. It is important to mention one more settlement near Devín. Dubravka now a part of Bratislava was founded by the Croats in 1571 during the third stage of Croatian immigration. The Croatian identity was preserved, followed by the nurturing of the Croatian language transformed this place into a meeting place for most of the Croats in Slovakia. Today, however, the older generation of Dubravka speaks Croatian. The above could also be applied to the city of Skalice. The evidence for the existance of Croatian roots as well as something specific of this region is a document from 1569 in which Skalice was founded by an agreement of the majority of Croats, the builders and first inhabitants of this city.
