Culture
Located in the heart of the European continent, Slovakia is a land of approximately 19,000 square miles with about 5.2 million inhabitants. Its natural boundaries are the Tatry or Carpathian Mountains (with a high peak, Gerlach, of 2655 meters) on the north and the Danube River on the south. The Tatras are a skier's paradise. The beauty found in these mountains, along with Slovakia's landscapes and countryside, is awesome. There are several hundred mineral and thermal springs and more than twenty spas in Slovakia. Thousands of visitors from around the world each year utilize these resources for various health ailments. Also, dozens of castles dot the country. Once used as residences for royalty, then later as places of refuge in times of war, many of them are today used as educational, social, or recreation centers, house museums, and gift shops. They are a main attraction for tourists. Many of the castles, and especially the century-old churches, have a breathtaking Gothic architecture which compares to no other. One will find the churches' interiors lined in marble and trimmed in gold, all glistening through crystal chandeliers. The cultural and artistic currents found in Slovakia have strongly prevailed through the centuries to the present day. The people are known for their wood-carving, ceramics, crystal and glass works, and beautifully handcrafted embroidered articles such as tablecloths, napkins, doilies, etc.

Slovakia History and Culture
History Slovakia existed as part of Hungary from the beginning of the 10th century until 1918, when it united with the Czech lands of Bohemia and Moravia, in addition to a small part of Silesia, to form Czechoslovakia. In 1939, shortly before the start of World War II, Slovakia declared its independence under pressure from German dictator Adolf Hitler, but in 1945 it was reunited with the rest of Czechoslovakia. From 1948 until 1989 Czechoslovakia was ruled by a Soviet-style Communist regime. During the yaer 1993 the country broke apart, and Slovakia became independent. Culture The development of Slovak culture reflects the country's rich folk tradition, in addition to the influence of broader European trends.

Culture shock: A few tips
By Chris Togneri photo: Ján Svrèek The Slovakia found beyond the capital city is significantly prettier, friendlier, and more relaxed.
Visitors to any foreign country often experience culture shock - the feeling of disorientation experienced by someone when they are suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture, way of life, or set of attitudes. But in Slovakia, a country which should above all be known for its generous and hospitable residents, the shock doesn't have to be so jarring. All you need are a few tips. There's perhaps no better starting point than alcohol , a pastime taken quite seriously by Slovaks. Some things to remember: na zdravie is equivalent to the English 'cheers', literally meaning 'to health.' Before the first round, you are expected to clink glasses (štrngnú) - remember to make eye contact with your fellow clinker, and don't cross the path of two other clinkers. Many Slovaks will first clink the top of their beer mugs, then the bottom, then the table in a choreographed pre-drink ritual. After the first round, it's no longer necessary to štrngnú. When ordering drinks, remember that Slovaks count beginning with the thumb (1), then the thumb and index finger (2), and so on. If you stick up your index finger to signify one beer, you may end up with a confused waiter bringing two.

Slovakia is officially also called Slovak Republic (in Slovak: Slovenská republika ). However, this form is not often used and its use is not desired by the Slovaks. The short form is lingustically or historically more correct than the long one. The recent practice, especially in economic texts, of using the name Slovak Republic instead of Slovakia , when the terms Hungary, Slovenia etc. are used in the same text, is wrong. This wrong usage arose in analogy to the use of the term Czech Republic, but that is (partly) another problem (see Czech Republic Czech lands edit
