Slovak History and Culture
Slovakia is a country simply rich in history and culture. This section of the web site begins by looking at the History of Slovakia, covering Slovak history from the time of the Samo Empire until the present day. In Famous Slovaks, we look at many of the great Slovak people that played their part in forming the country that Slovakia is today. These Slovaks also contributed a lot to the world, in terms of art, music, literature, poetry, science, mathematics, politics and sport. In "A Traditional Slovak Calendar" you can learn about the Slovak beliefs, legends and customs from the past. These legends and customs are described within the context of traditional feastdays throughout the calendar year. In Slovakia, tradition is also kept alive in the form of music and dance. Music is popular throughout Slovakia, so we have included a section dedicated to Slovak Folk Music.

Culture minister: It's a long-distance run
By Saša Petrášová and Zuzana Habšudová
Spectator Staff

photo: photo: TASR

LITERARY historian Rudolf Chmel never wanted to enter politics and never liked administrative work. Now he occupies the chair of the culture minister and administers what is considered to be one of the most neglected spheres in the country - culture. "After the elections [last September], representatives from all parties of the current coalition put pressure on me to accept the post. The position fell to our party because other parties were not too interested in it," he said. After half a year in the job, during which time he got to know the workings of the ministry's machinery, Chmel realised how heterogeneous, fragmented, and, above all, underfinanced the Slovak cultural sphere is.
Still considering himself an independent intellectual despite his position, the nominee of the party run by TV Markíza founder Pavol Rusko is making it a priority to free culture from political and ideological influences, and to increase interest for it at home and abroad.

THE HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE HARVEST AREAS AND YIELDS OF STRAWBERRY IN SLOVAKIA
Slovakia, which is situated in the centre of Europe with the continental climate, has its specific cultivation conditions. Strawberry can be cultivated more or less practically on the whole territory. From the big strawberry areas I can mention Bratislava and surroundings, Šurany, Nové Zámky, Levoèa, Liptovský Mikuláš, Trenèín, Bojnice and Prievidza.
From the historic survey of the harvest areas and yields in Slovakia, we can see from 1963 up to the present time:
the increase of the harvest areas for 10 times
the increase of the yields per hectare for 2.5 times
and the total yields increase in tons for 24.8 times.
We could be satisfied with this development seemingly. But, on the contrary, after the political and economical changes in 1989 and achieving independence in Slovakia, some damping has been arisen in both cultivation and generous works.
To make the strawberry cultivation more vivid and pleasing expects: The proposal (financially interesting) and the virosisless biomass sufficiency (plants) with the help of the meristem cultures. We have confirmed this in our experiments with the variety of 'Senga Sengana' with the yield of 23.1 t.ha
