Culture
After almost 900 years of Hungarian domination, a 19th-century National Revival commenced with the creation of the Slovak literary language by the nationalist L'udovt Stºr. This enabled the emergence of a Slovak national consciousness. One of the leading artists in the revival was poet Pavol O Hviezdoslav, whose works have been translated into several languages. Slovakia's architectural wonders include the Gothic St James Church in Levoca and the magnificent Renaissance buildings in Bardejov. Traditional Slovak folk instruments include the fujara (a 2m/6.5ft-long flute), the gajdy (bagpipes) and the konkovka (a strident shepherd's flute). Folk songs helped preserve the Slovak language during Hungarian rule, and in East Slovakia ancient folk traditions still play an important part in village life. Religion is taken pretty seriously by the folksy Slovaks. Catholics are in a majority but Protestants and Evangelicals are also numerous. In East Slovakia there are many Greek Catholics and Orthodox believers. There are only a few thousand Jews in Slovakia today: some 73,500 Slovak Jews were removed to concentration camps by the Nazi SS and the Slovak Hlinka guards. After the war most survivors left for Israel. Slovakia's Romany gypsies escaped deportation but many have left for the Czech Republic where jobs have been easier to come by. As elsewhere in Eastern Europe, there is much prejudice against gypsies. An aspect of Slovak nationalism is pride in the language and Slovaks can get a little hot under the collar when Slovak is given short shrift in comparison with other Slavic languages. As a visitor you won't be taken to task for mixing Czech with Slovak, but any effort to communicate in the local language will be appreciated. Although many people working in tourism have a good knowledge of English, in rural Slovakia very few people speak anything other than Slovak. German is probably the most useful non-Slavic language to know.

Country Info Slovakia Introduction Slovakia General Data Slovakia Maps Slovakia Culture ... Slovakia Time and Date Slovakia Culture Back to Top The antecedents of a distinct Slovak culture date from the mission sent to Moravia in AD 863 by the Byzantine emperor Michael III at the request of the Moravian prince Rostislav; the Moravian state then encompassed at least part of the territory of present-day Slovakia. Byzantine influence was short-lived, however, disappearing from the region after the invasions by nomadic Magyar tribes toward the end of the 9th century. The South Slavs were separated from the Slavs living north of the Danube River, and, as the territory of Slovakia came under Magyar control, it became known as Upper Hungary. The development of Slovak culture reflects the country’s rich folk tradition, in addition to the influence of broader European trends. The impact of centuries of cultural repression and control by foreign governments is also evident in much of Slovakia’s art, literature, and music. Slovak dialects are related to Czech, but they have been distinct since the Middle Ages. No systematic attempt was made, however, to develop a Slovak literary language, although in the 18th century devotional texts were produced with increasingly local flavour, and Josef Ignác Bajza wrote the didactic novel René (1783–85) in heavily Slovak-influenced Czech. Finally, Anton Bernolák consolidated a Slovak literary form in a grammar (1790) and a six-volume dictionary (1825–27), using the western Slovak dialect as a base. The poet Ján Kollár, using this language, completed Slávy dcera (“The Daughter of Sláva”) in 1824, which, in the Romantic literary tradition, celebrated the common past of the Slavs. Bernolák's language also was used by Ján Hollý, who wrote lyrics, idylls, and national epics.

Slovak Culture
Culture: Synopsis Featured Exhibitions
Historical Cultural Synopsis The emergence of culture and of Slovak national literature came late. Elements of the Slovakian spoken language appeared in literary texts during the centuries preceding the 18th century, but Anton Bernolák (1762-1813) was the first who attempted to create a literary language. Bernolák's language was used by two talented writers, Jozef Ignác Bajza (1755-1836), the author of the first Slovakian novel, and the famous classical poet Ján Hollý (1785-1849), who wrote his epic poems in alexandrine verse in order to prove the Slovakian language malleable enough to be equal to complicated forms of ancient poetry. 19th Century This language, based on the dialect from central Slovakia, was adopted by the entire nation. Inspired by the Helegian philosophy, he developed the concept of Slovakian romanticism, whose main characteristics are the pre-eminence of patriotic thought and the attachment to popular traditions. During the difficult period of forced "Hungary-isation" that followed the missed revolution of 1948, a few writers endeavoured to maintain the morale of a population progressively stripped of its' culture.

Quick Facts
F.A.Q. Detailed Info Personal Account
Presidents Kovac, Clinton and Havel In the 1990 census, more than 2 million Americans and Canadians claimed Slovak descent. by June G. Alexander Large-scale Slovak immigration to the United States began in the late 1870s, when Slovakia was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire administered by Hungary. Because U.S. immigration officials did not keep separate records for each ethnic group within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it is impossible to determine the exact number of Slovak immigrants who entered the United States. Between 1880 and the mid-1920s, approximately 500,000 Slovaks immigrated to the United States. About two-thirds of these immigrants were men. Most Slovaks immigrated for economic reasons. Seeking employment, they moved to regions where major industries, such as steel manufacturing and coal mining, needed unskilled labor. More than half of Slovak immigrants settled in Pennsylvania. Other popular destinations included Ohio, Illinois, New York and New Jersey. Many Slovak immigrants who came to the United States before World War I(1914-1918) could neither read nor write. This high illiteracy rate reflected the rural background and farming heritage of most immigrants. The repression of Slovak culture by Hungary, which governed the Slovak region until 1918, also discouraged the development of literacy among Slovaks. Slovak American parents typically encouraged children to seek secure jobs rather than social or economic advancement. Although some Slovak Americans entered such professions as law and education, most second-generation Slovak American men became industrial laborers.

All Slovaks understand Czech and as a visitor you won't be taken to task for mixing Czech with Slovak, but any effort to communicate in the local language will be appreciated. Although many people working in tourism have a good knowledge of English, only very few people speak anything other than Slovak in rural Slovakia Cuisine Traditional Slovak eating and drinking habits date back to the old Slavic period influenced later by Hungarian, Austrian and German cuisine. Slovak food is based on many different kinds of soups, gruel, boiled and stewed vegetables, roast and smoked meats and dairy products. Vegetarians will not find their paradise in the Slovak national cuisine. The style of cooking varies from region to region. Slovak specialties include salted and sweetened dishes made with flour, including dumplings. One such dish is the popular bryndzove halusky (small potato dumplings made with goats cheese).
Although the Slovaks do not consume as much as their Czech cousins, the tradition of beer brewing has strong roots in the country. Dozens of brands, mainly from local micro- breweries, can be found across the land. Most established stock brands are made within the locality. But Slovaks are known as wine rather than beer drinkers. Even though viticulture is not one of the most significant branches of Slovak agriculture, it has its importance. It is known for its rich traditions and particularly high quality wines coming from several vineyard regions. Wine growing and wine making are also of historic importance for Slovaks and Slovakia. About 2 thousand years ago the ancient Romans brought wine growing to the region. At that time wine, wine growing and wine making were very popular and also highly respected.

The Carpathian Germans were a small German people living in the territory of today's Slovakia from the 12th century to 1945, when they suffered genocide. The United Nations in 1948 condemned as genocide any attempt " to destroy in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group as such "in its homeland by murder or deportation, and is currently judging political and military leaders who ordered and supervized such actions in the past round of Balkan wars. Such a destruction was also committed against the Carpathian German people in 1945-1947. This is the history, and the current doings, of the people I come from.
