24. Montana Winter
sledding Tobogganing in Montana a northern climate has fond memories of sledding, tobogganing, tubing, or otherwise sliding down a Wonderful Life"? George saving his brother in the sledding
http://www.wintermt.com/other/sledding.htm
Slip Sliding Away:
A Different Kind of Downhill Safety First A Different Kind of Downhill Anyone who grew up in a northern climate has fond memories of sledding, tobogganing, tubing, or otherwise sliding down a hill on some sort of contraption. It's as much an annual winter ritual as building snowmen or making snow angels. What's one of the first scenes to come to mind when you think of "It's a Wonderful Life"? George saving his brother in the sledding accident, of course. And what about Citizen Kane's final word: Rosebud? It was conjured by memories of his favorite childhood sled. Clearly, sledding appeals to the kid in all of us. All across Montana, you'll find popular sledding hills in every townjust follow the kids with smiles on their faces. In addition, many resorts have sledding and tobogganing. The Big Mountain, for instance, has built a special run just for such purposes. Safety First Now for the not-so-fun part about sledding, tobogganing and tubing: they can be dangerous. Yes, every mother says that, but it also happens to be quite true. In fact, the two most common injuries caused by sledding are head injuries and broken bonesboth of which can be serious. Time after time, the cause of injury is loss of controlthe person sledding simply cannot turn and runs into an object or falls off. This can be avoided by following a few safety precautions.

Tips for Safer sledding and Tobogganing. But sledding unintentional injuries are surprisingly common despite snow s cushioning effect.
http://www.nsc.org/library/facts/sledding.htm
Tips for Safer Sledding and Tobogganing Sliding downhill is an exhilarating winter sport. People of all ages can participate, and use all kinds of containers, from large toboggans to plastic disks or even cardboard boxes. But sledding unintentional injuries are surprisingly common despite snow's cushioning effect. Estimates of the number of injuries treated in hospital emergency rooms every year show about 33,000 sledding injuries and 1,500 from tobogganing. Sledding injuries often include facial lacerations or skull fractures. Tobogganing injuries almost always involve the lower half of the body. Children ages 5 to 9 are most susceptible to injury. Parents of young children should not let them sled alone. Older children should be taught to check for hazards. The National Safety Council offers these guidelines for safe and fun sledding and tobogganing:
  • Keep all equipment in good condition. Broken parts, sharp edges, cracks and split wood invite injuries.
  • Dress warmly enough for conditions.
  • Sled on spacious, gently sloping hills which have a level run-off at the end so that the sled can come to a halt safely. Avoid steep slopes and slopes located near streets and roadways.

Rustic Dog Sledding Expeditions
in Algonquin Park, Ontario
After meeting the dog sled teams, at the edge of Algonquin Park, you will be given instructions on the proper technique of controlling a dog sled and a team of eager sled dogs. You will help harness the Huskies, hook them up to the dogsleds, and issue a command..."Mush"! Off you will race as the dogs strain at their harnesses, happy to be pulling a dog sled once again. After they settle down into their natural pace, you will steer them into the forests surrounding Algonquin Park, navigating twisting trails and wide open frozen lakes. On the flat parts of the trail you can relax with the wind blowing in your face, and watch the majestic winter forest silently glide by! In the evening we get to enjoy the "wilderness luxury" of the Algonquin Wilderness Eco-Lodge deep inside the forests of the Algonquin region. But first, everyone must help out with the chores. The first thing to do is look after our hard working sled dogs! This comprises of unhooking them from their dogsleds, feeding and watering them. We also have to make sure they have suitable shelter from the cold Algonquin night wind, and store our dog sleds away. We are then free to relax, go snowshoeing, or partake in our winter ritual - bathing suit "snow angels"! Then jump into the outdoor hot tub or sauna! After enjoying a gourmet home cooked meal we can sit around the old fashioned wood stove and exchanging travellers' tales and ghost stories! The wood stove and wood furnace ensure that we're all toasty warm at night!
