Solar Eclipse Workshop at HartRAO
To prepare for the total solar eclipse that will trace a path over southern africa on 4 December 2002, a workshop was held at HartRAO about the eclipse for partner science education organisations. This workshop was partly funded by a grant of R25000 from the Foundation for Education, Science and Technology ( FEST ) on behalf of the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (DACST), now the Department of Science and Technology ( DST The aim of the workshop was not only to supply information about the eclipse, but to provide our partners in the eclipse project with materials they could use to educate people in their area of the country. This entailed a considerable amount of work by the HartRAO Science Awareness team and support staff, particularly in the mechanical workshop. A photographic report gives an idea of the preparation for the eclipse workshop, and some of what took place during the event. The workshop was held from 9 - 11 July 2002. External participants were:

HartRAO equips partners for solar eclipse
To prepare for the total solar eclipse that will trace a path over southern Africa on 4 December 2002, HartRAO staff held a workshop for colleagues of partner science education organisations in July. Some of the participants had essentially no prior exposure to astronomy, but all showed a good understanding of eclipses after the workshop. The workshop not only supplied information about the eclipse, but HartRAO's partners in the eclipse project were also equipped with materials they will be able to use for educational purposes. This entailed a considerable amount of work by the HartRAO science awareness team and support staff, particularly in the mechanical workshop. Participants came from the Giyani Science Centre, the University of Venda, Limpopo Tourism, the Burgerrecht Village in Limpopo Province, the Moffat Mission Trust in the Northern Cape, and the North West Department of Education.

There's one that I have in mind that is my favorite resource for astronomy, The Nature Company Guides: Skywatching by David H. Levy [288 pages]. I bought the book many years ago. It is out of print now, but you should be able to find it at the library. [ I take that back, it is now available in paperback and so is "Astronomy" and "Weather" by The Nature Company Guides.] If you wish to cover parts of astronomy, I recommend this book. For the sake of this example let us say that you want to design a group of lessons that teach how to read a star map, how to find certain stars and identify constellations. See the objectives listed below... These classes could take place in September through October in preparation of the lab. The lab for the astronomy unit should be going outside finding the stars and constellations. In the northern hemisphere the best time to observe the night sky is during winter.

The Pleiades (close-up)
Part of Taurus showing Pleiades, Hyades and Aldebaran
What a wonderful misty group of stars is the Pleiades. They are easily seen with the naked eye in the winter sky. They are also known as the Seven Sisters. The Pleiades is the most famous open star cluster in the sky and is part of the Taurus constellation. It is the shoulder of the bull.
On a reasonably dark night, you should be able to see six or seven of the stars of the Pleiades; with binoculars you should see nine of the brightest stars. There are around five hundred stars in the Pleiades. Another open star cluster is Hyades (pictured bottom left). It is not as bright as the Pleiades, so you will have to look carefully. Hyades is closer to us, only 150 light years away, so the stars of Hyades appear spread out. Hyades is the head of the bull in the Taurus constellation.

While the answers are limited for these and other important questions right now, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and other programs continue to explore space, and they may be bringing some answers to us any day now. Until then, here are a few activities to get your kids started on their own space exploration. Nightwatch: A Practical Guide to Viewing the Universe
by Terence Dickinson, 176 pages 3rd edition (November 1998), Firefly Books; ISBN: 155209300X ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.79 x 10.81 x 10.80
Price: $31.50 The third edition of Nightwatch continues its tradition of being the best handbook for the beginning astronomer. Terence Dickinson covers all the problems beginners face, starting with the fact that the night sky does not look the way a modern city-dweller expects. He discusses light pollution, how to choose binoculars and telescopes, how to pronounce the names of stars and constellations, telescope mounts, averted vision, and why the harvest moon looks especially bright. Most of the lovely photographs in the book were taken by amateurs, which gives the section on astrophotography a particularly inspirational gleam. Dickinson's star charts are very handy, each covering a reasonable field of view and mapping the most interesting amateur objects. He gives good advice for planet watching, which he notes "is one of the few astronomical activities that can be conducted almost as well from the city as from dark rural locations." Altogether, the watchword for Nightwatch is indeed "practical" this is a book to be used, not just read. Spiral-bound to lie flat or to fold back undamaged, it's a field guide that pulls its own weight in the field. Author Timothy Ferris says, "Like a good night sky, Nightwatch is clear and wind-free. Try it and see for yourself."
