UNH Professor's Expertise Is the Architecture of Skyscrapers

Editors and News Directors: We offer the following as a story idea you may wish to follow up on for a feature. Professor Andrew can be reached at 862-4693. DURHAM, N.H. The first skyscraper was built in Chicago in 1884 by William LeBaron Jenney. Professor David Andrew, an art historian in the University of New Hampshire's Department of Art and Art History since 1976, teaches modern architectural history and has made a particular study of skyscrapers. After the collapse of the World Trade Center towers, Andrew says, "I have no doubt skyscrapers will continue to be built. They are an investor's dream come true, but I have great reservations about the skyscraper as a building type. The terrible events of Sept. 11 reminded us how vulnerable these structures are, especially at that scale and with that kind of construction. This would probably be a good time for a review of the practicality and safety of these structures." Prior to the WTC, skyscrapers employed a steel skeletal frame with columns and girders distributed throughout the entire building. This is true of the Empire State Building, for example, which remained standing after a B-25 accidentally struck it in 1945. But the WTC, designed by Minoru Yamasaki in the mid-1960s, introduced a revolutionary new method for skyscraper construction in which the exterior walls, with their many steel-reinforced concrete columns, did most of the work. The Trade Towers were basically big hollow tubes.

reasons. It¹s not only considered the birthplace of the skyscraper, but also the birthplace of the first American architecture.
    http://www.michael.leland.name/chimain.htm
Chicago Architecture Chicago is an important city in the history of architecture for many reasons. It¹s not only considered the birthplace of the skyscraper, but also the birthplace of the first American architecture. The Great Fire that lasted from October 8 to October 9, 1871 burned for thirty-six hours, killed 300 people and destroyed a third of the city. The area leveled by the fire was about four miles long and one mile wide. Although this left the city in ashes, it did not slow the city's rapid growth. It also left plenty of room for architects to design modern structures. The city's population doubled from 1880 to 1890 causing real estate prices to skyrocket. In addition, natural and man-made forces limited the boundaries of the city. To the North and West, the downtown area was surrounded by the Chicago River. The stockyards to the South completed this boundary. The obvious solution to these limitations was to make buildings taller. The Home Insurance Building, designed by William Le Baron Jenney and completed in 1885, is considered by many to be the world's first skyscraper. The building featured a steel frame allowing it to be taller than past buildings. Although this steel frame was supplemented by masonry construction, the Home Insurance Building still had the important features of the modern skyscraper including advancements in elevators, foundations, lighting and climate control. Although the Home Insurance Building was demolished in 1931 to make way for the Field Building, it is still an important piece of the history of skyscrapers. Jenney was really an engineer rather than an architect. His engineering knowledge, honed by building bridges for the North during the Civil War, was important to these many developments.

This article is about architecture as referring to buildings; for other meanings of the word see computer architecture software architecture information architecture The Parthenon on top of the Acropolis, Athens, Greece Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings . A wider definition would include within its scope the design of the total built environment, from the macrolevel of town planning urban design , and landscape to the microlevel of furniture and product design . Architecture, equally importantly, also refers to the product of such a design. According to the earliest surviving work on the subject, Vitruvius De Architectura , good building should have Beauty (Venustas), Firmness (Firmitas) and Utility (Utilitas); architecture can be said to be a balance and coordination among these three elements, with none overpowering the others. A modern day definition sees architecture as addressing functional, aesthetic, and psychological considerations. However, looked at another way, function itself is seen as encompassing all criteria, including aesthetic and psychological ones. Architecture is a multi-disciplinary field, including within its fold

In a series of art pottery displayed on the second floor, he sculpts vases in asymmetrical shapes, sometimes pinching them, and then ladles glazes that ooze with a lax beauty different from the highly stylized, overcontrolled patterns of his early work. Some glazes resemble the color-field paintings of Abstract Expressionists almost a century later. In his late textile designs, floral patterns of Art Nouveau fabrics sway in aqueous flotation. The liquid shapes of glass vases burst the girdle of symmetry: Bubbles in the diaphanous material effervesce, like frozen champagne. Related Links:

This site will look much better in a browser that supports web standards , but it is accessible to any browser or Internet device. VISUAL INDEX TO THE VIRTUAL ARCHIVE LAUNCH VIVA Required: Macromedia Flash Player , version 7 In 2001, the Museum was awarded an IMLS National Leadership Grant in the Museums On-line category for VIVA History: Visual Index to the Virtual Archives, an innovative visually-based interface that uses a 3-D computer model of Manhattan as a click-on map, allowing Web visitors to view the city, present and past, and to access the Museum's collections through an on-line, searchable database. The idea of a visual index to the collection recognizes the importance of graphic representation in both the medium of the website and in the way that visitors, virtual or actual, come to understand and comprehend a city through its geography and landmarks. An index to the Museum's archives based on the image of the city allows web visitors or researchers to explore specific buildings or districts and their histories without, necessarily, coming to the site with a specific topic or question in mind. People perceive cities geographically, that is, as places shaped by streets, landmarks, districts, etc. Creating an index to the Museum's archives that is based on the image of the city will allow web visitors to explore specific buildings or districts and their histories without, necessarily, coming to the site with a specific topic or question in mind. Simply seeing the city in the extraordinarily detailed overview of the computer model will spur questions, either about buildings that are familiarfor example, the Empire State or Chrysler Buildingor that appear interesting, but are unknown to the viewer. The visual character of the index thus encourages investigation.
