Singapore by night January 2002 Most of the skyscrapers are located in the financial district right next to the bay but there are also many high-rises all over the city. It's due to very high land prices so it's worth building high. Even residential districts consist of 20-, 30-floors or higher buildings. Unfortunately there is a limit of 280m due to air traffic so nothing higher will be ever built in Singapore (or they change the limit). Really dunno why it's limited to 280m :0 The airport is far away from the financial district. I couldn't c any danger for higher buildings as we were approaching the airport. July 2002 This time I had more luck and the weather was very nice so the pics r much better than last time :))) I hope they will give you at least a bit of city's charm. This time I stayed at Westin Stamford (highest hotel in town) so the view was incredible (but watch out Westin isn't economic class hotel ;) February and April 2003 I have to admit that my love for this city is constantly growing :) Some ppl say it's no longer Asian but I don't care since it's the most beautiful city I've ever seen.

Why Skyscrapers? Introduction The First Elevator Why Skyscrapers? Early Styles ... Full Text (PDF) Nine stories does not sound like a skyscraper to us today when we are used to buildings of fifty or sixty or more stories, but if you look at an old view of the City Hall area along Park Row, you can see the Tribune Building really towering over all the other buildings. And you can see with this tower with a sharp point on the top why people began calling these buildings skyscrapers. A building of this height was a really incredible novelty to people in the nineteenth century and these buildings caught the attention of the public. Some people loved them but others found it really scary that buildings like this would be built.

Will Americans fall out of love with the skyscraper?
by BBC News Online's Emma Clark The collapse of the World Trade Center was in some ways a tragic accident of design. Both jets managed to penetrate the very core of the buildings, disbursing jet fuel and fire into the heart of the structure. Had there been more fire-resistant concrete and less steel in the core, many more of the building's occupants might have evacuated before any collapse. Equally, had the twin towers not stood as a blatant symbol of American capitalism, the terrorists might have chosen another target. For the present, however, such rationality does little to neutralise the fear now associated with working in skyscrapers. Initial reactions At the time of the attack on 11 September, almost every skyscraper in the US evacuated as workers became terrified that they would become the next victims.
There will be no proposals for 100 storey buildings in America for a long, long time

"This phenomenon cannot be stopped simply because these two buildings came down," Ali said. "First of all, egos will always want to go higher." A second factor that practically guarantees future construction of tall buildings, he said, is a global population explosion. "Everywhere, people are moving from villages to cities," he said. "And with rapid population growth, land is scarce and expensive, particularly in big cities," leaving developers and builders nowhere to go but up.

Architecture in Downtown Dallas
Dallas, Texas with a population of 1,188,580, is a city with a very recognizable skyline that has been used in many television shows and movies. From the green argon outlined Bank of America Plaza, to Reunion Tower, to the Flying Red Horse on top of the Magnolia Hotel, these icons have embraced the buildings that comprise the Architecture in Downtown Dallas. Dallas has been selected by Fortune Magazine as the best city in which to do business in the U.S.! As the larger part of the Metroplex, Dallas took a much different approach to development than its counterpart, Fort Worth. As Dallas grew more quickly, older buildings were demolished to construct newer and taller buildings. Fort Worth chose to preserve many of their downtown buildings. Dallas has many fine examples of Modern Architecture, while Fort Worth has many fine examples of historic buildings that have been carefully restored. Interactive Map of Downtown Dallas - UNDER CONSTRUCTION, BUT WORKING! Below you will find a listing of the buildings to be included within this site. The Rise and Perseverance of Skyscrapers
Written by Leeann Hunter A skyscraper, according to the The Hutchinson Dictionary of the Arts , is a “[b]uilding so tall that it appears to ‘scrape the sky,’ developed in 1868 in New York, United States, where land prices were high and the geology allowed such methods of construction.” American cities such as New York City and Chicago became world leaders in 20th-century skyscraper architecture for their creation and development of soaring structures and dynamic skylines that grew to symbolize economic prosperity, technological strength and cultural expression. A succession of the world’s tallest buildings defined the country’s landscape and national identity: New York City’s Empire State Building of 1931, New York City’s Twin Towers at the World Trade Center of 1970-1974 and Chicago’s Sears Tower of 1973. In recent decades international skyscraper construction has escalated, particularly in Southeast Asia, where the twin Petronas Towers of Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, reside as the reigning two tallest buildings in the world. The race for sky-high buildings, recorded in SIRS Renaissance articles such as “Chicago’s Ego” and “Clambering to the Top,” frequently dominated the architectural discourse of the 20th century. In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers of New York City’s World Trade Center, attitudes concerning public architecture, particularly skyscrapers, have altered drastically.
