Back to Category listings After the fire devastated Chicago in 1871 building regulations were changed to allow multistory structures. The first skyscrapers were built here as well as some of the first apartment houses. Architects such as Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler pioneered new building styles. Frank Lloyd Wright worked in Sullivans office and would later design stunning buildings of his own. I personally have had the pleasure of spending some time in Chicago taking these pictures and find the world class architecture of this windy city to be truly inspiring.

Chicago
New York City St. Louis Tulsa Tulsa hosted the World Congress on Art Deco in April 2001. See links for more information. Links Bibliography last modified 5/27/2002 As close as I can tell, my love of architecture started in January 1990, when I visited Chicago for the first time. It was my first visit to a big city and I was awed by the tall skyscrapers. The following year, I visited Los Angeles and was again excited by all the wonderful buildings. During these trips, I took pictures of buildings, but that was about it. My enthusiasm for architecture has increased significantly since that time. In 1994, I visited New York City and the next year Miami. On each of these trips, my interest in the architecture has grown. I now plan trips specifically to see the buildings. I do research before arriving in the city and now make a point of buying at least one guidebook for each city I visit. The pictures on this web site are ones that I have taken on trips to various places. Because this interest has grown, some of my early "city tours" are currently lacking. I also do not have as many pictures or the quality of pictures I would like. I received a new camera as a birthday gift the summer of 1999, and am now taking much better pictures. However, my New York pictures were all taken with the old camera, and are therefore not as good.

Related Category: Architecture The tallest skyscrapers are freestanding structures such as the CN Tower in Toronto (opened 1976), which measures 1,815 ft (553 m), and the Ostankino Tower in Moscow (opened 1967), which is 1,771 ft (540 m) high. By convention, however, a building is defined as being primarily for human habitation with the greatest majority of its height divided into occupiable floors. The height of a building is measured from the sidewalk level of the main entrance to the structural top of the building. This includes spires but does not include television antennas, radio antennas, or flagpoles. By this definition the tallest buildings are the twin Petronas Towers (opened 1997) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; 88 stories high and topped by twin spires, they stand 1,483 ft (456 m) tall. Second highest is the Sears Tower (opened 1974) in Chicago; its 110 stories rise 1,454 ft (443 m) with an additional 253 ft (77 m) for the television antenna on top, making it the world's third tallest freestanding structure at 1,707 ft (520 m). The next tallest building, the 1,380 ft (420 m) tall Jin Mao Building (opened 1998) in Shanghai, China, is another example of leadership in skyscraper construction shifting from the United States. A number of huge structures are under construction in Asia; the 224-story Centre of India Tower in Katangi, India, will be the tallest of all at 2,222 ft (676 m) when it is completed in 2008. The 7 South Dearborn building in Chicago (scheduled to open in late 2003) will be 108 stories and 1,550 (471 m) high; a mixed residential, office, and retail structure, it will have the world's highest apartments at 1,177 feet (358 m) above street level.

Posted by Hollie on November 03, 2001 at 06:28:36: Please share with me your knowledge on the briefly discussed deployable escape shoots which were used (and discontinued I think) to carry people from the upper floors of skyscrapers to safety in the case of fire. I believe the problem was friction ... (skin against the material X 100 floors = injury)? Thanks Hollie
