Leptospirosis outbreaks tough to diagnose
Disease may be caused by proximity to wildlife
Introduction
Canine outbreaks of leptospirosis in several states are sparking discussion and controversy about vaccination practices for prevention of the disease and concern for transfer of the disease to humans. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection cause by a family of organisms known as Leptospira interrogans. Until recently, vaccines were available for only two strains (Leptospirosis canicola and L. icterhaemorrhagiae), but vaccines for two additional types (L. grippotyphosa and L. pomona) are now on the market. Controversy arises because some dogs are allergic to the carrier in the lepto vaccine; as a result, some veterinarians no longer use the inoculant in areas where the disease is not a problem. Concern about side-effects are relatively new; clinical canine leptospirosis caused by L. canicola and L. icterhaemorrhagiae is rare in the US, a situation attributed to widespread administration of the vaccine. The new outbreaks are being caused by L. grippotyphosa and L. pomona, strains that are prevalent in some species of wildlife. The theory is that the disease has entered suburban areas with populations of skunks, raccoons, opossums, deer, and small rodents and that dogs become vectors of these strains through contact with the urine of these animals. Lepto can infect livestock as well, so cattle and hogs that wade or wallow in areas contaminated by the urine of carrier animals can also get the disease.

Cats are born hunters. Their hunting instincts are not dulled even if they are domesticated. It is this that leads them to surprise and shock their owners with gifts of dead birds and snakes. Here are some interesting facts about the cat's hunting habits.
Training The Hunter

Animals It Preys On

Myths And Misconceptions

What Can You Do

Training The Hunter
Since cats are natural hunters, try not to teach your cat how to catch mice. Russian writer Anton Chekhov once narrated an anecdote about how his Latin teacher failed in teaching his kitten to hunt. Whenever the kitten refused to chase the mice, the teacher punished the kitten. After the animal grew up into an adult cat, it always cowered in terror in the presence of a mouse.
The best teacher for a kitten is nature and the mother cat. The mother usually teaches a kitten how to hunt by first bringing it a dead mouse to eat. Once the kitten gets used to eating it, the mother brings it a mouse that is just barely alive. Eventually, the mother offers it a mouse that has strength enough to run, so that the kitten can chase and hunt it down. The mother cat never punishes her little kitten.

Stanford Cat Network celebrates fifth anniversary
STANFORD Five years ago this month, concerned Stanford University community members banded together in an attempt to avert a "cat-astrophe" in the making. In January 1989, the university announced that it planned on taking steps to deal with what officials feared had become an unmanageably large feral cat population on campus - estimates ranged from the hundreds to upward of 1,500. After plans were announced to trap the feral cats and ship them off to humane societies, where they would likely be put to sleep, a group of volunteers approached university officials with a proposal to humanely trap the cats and have them spayed, neutered, vaccinated and tagged so that they could remain alive on campus. With the help of Ron Parker and Herb Fong of Facilities, and Ray Busley of Crane Pest Control, the contractor that handles animal removal for the campus, the Stanford Cat Network was born. The informal group now considers itself a model for other campuses facing the problem of humanely dealing with numerous unwanted former pets and their offspring. "Stanford is a model for other institutions," said Carole Hyde, a Stanford staff member who has been with the network since the beginning. "It is in the forefront of a grass-roots movement to deal with homeless animals without killing them."

Unlike organic farming, which operates under federal standards, organic landscaping is not regulated by any nationwide system, public or private.

Eastern states setting standards for trend in organic landscaping

Connecticut and Massachusetts are thought to be the first states with an accrediting process established through the Organic Land Care Committee of the Connecticut and Massachusetts chapters of the private Northeast Organic Farming Association. "As far as we know, we are the only program that accredits people this way," said Bill Duesing, the Connecticut chapter coordinator of organic land care and educational and advocacy programs.

HEALTH COMMISSIONER ISSUES ANNUAL
SUMMER RABIES ALERT
With the summer season underway, New York City Health Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH today advised New Yorkers to avoid wild or stray animals that can carry rabies . Wild animals (e.g., skunks, raccoons and bats) behaving abnormally - such as attempting to interact with or attack pets, stumbling, or acting disoriented - should be reported to the local police precinct or the Center for Animal Care and Control ( CACC ) Animal Rescue at Dr. Frieden said, “While there has not been a human case of rabies in New York City in more than 50 years, New Yorkers should take precautions to ensure that children and pets avoid wild animals such as raccoons, bats and skunks - especially those that may be exhibiting abnormal behavior. Furthermore, New Yorkers should remember to license their pets and have them vaccinated against the rabies virus.” As infected pets can pass rabies along to their owners, all New Yorkers should ensure that their pet's rabies vaccinations are current. Initial vaccinations for dogs and cats are valid for one year, and re-vaccinations are valid for one or three years, depending on the type of vaccine. Additionally, New Yorkers should leash their pets to prevent them from coming into contact with wild animals.
