But I'm not here to talk about the internet, I'm here to talk about me. And did I mention that my name is Theo Possum? My story starts the night dear old Mom walked out in front of a pickup truck. Even though Mom was not looking very good and was feeling kind of run down, my two sisters and three brothers and I were all safe and cozy in her pouch. We were adopted by well meaning human types who wanted to save us from certain death. They gave us a nice cardboard pouch with soft fuzzy towels and a hot water bottle to keep us warm. Every three hours they would wake us up and feed us a warm formula of soy milk and 2% milk out of an eyedropper. Why soy milk and 2% milk, you ask? Who knows? As we grew, our humans fed us all kinds of things that they thought possums liked to eat. We were given grapes, apples, earthworms, cicadas, balogna, baby food, cheese, hamburger, turkey, gravy and other things I still can't name. We were happy, hungry and growing. Our humans were very pleased at saving us from inevitable doom.

Before rescuing an animal, make sure it really needs help. If you have witnessed the death of its mother, it obviously is an orphan. However, a dead rabbit in the street doesn’t necessarily mean the infant rabbits in your yard belong to that rabbit. Many species have hiding techniques to protect their young. Cottontail rabbits only visit their nest at dawn and dusk to feed their offspring. They stay away from the nest during the day because they don’t want to attract the attention of predators. If you find a nest of infants and believe the mother is missing, lay sticks in a specific pattern around the nest. Come back the next day to see if the sticks have been disturbed; if they have and the infants appear to be fine, the mother has probably made a visit to the nest and the young animals are not orphans. The best thing to do for them at this point is to leave them alone. If you find a healthy, young animal out of its nest and you think it is an orphan, leave it where you found it (as long as it isn’t in immediate danger) and try to locate the nest yourself. If the animal is in immediate danger from pets or predators, place it in a safe spot while you look for the nest. Once the nest is found, retrieve the animal and return it to its nest.

Introduction Over the years we have had a variety of non human visitors: dogs and cats, of course, but also iguanas, parrots, Vietnamese pot belly pigs, and a tortoise. Pets are welcome. There is a $25.00 charge per stay, for the first pet. Additional pets are $12.50. We will supply bowls for food and water, litter bags, treat, covers to protect furniture and bedding. Dog beds available on request. Our rules are simple. Please do not leave your pet unattended in your room without letting us know in case he or she is uncomfortable in new surrounding. We have had doors chewed and badly scratched. Guests have taken care of damage, but the issue is that their pets were unhappy. We find that dogs are most happy in their accompanying their owners when exploring the area. Our weather is cool and with windows left open, no harm should come to them. Cats are not great travelers, however some are accustomed to traveling and are very comfortable in their traveling carriers. All our domestic animals have little choice about where they are and how we treat them. We know this and, here, animals come first. We all care about their health and well being and when you are exploring the inn you'll find Dan's Stormy Shadow (Dan), a horse who broke his leg in 1988 and, although his leg is frozen he is happy, a cat, originally called the "Stranger" and now "Stinky Butt," who broke his back and must stay outside due to his condition. You might find a seagull, pigeon on other animal being rehabilitated.
