Before You Buy
By David Flack Home Store Front Customer Service ... Care Articles Every exotic pet has some specialized care needs. Even common small pets may require more care than thought. Before buying any new pet, know what sort of committment you are making. To do this, learn all you can first. Otherwise, it'll be impossible for you to to make a responsible decision, and and you won't be able to honestly answer these three questions: Will this new pet and you make a good match?
Animals have habits and behaviors based on that critter's own uniqueness. Examples include sleep cycles, activity levels, need for affection and many other factors. A strong human/pet bond will only develop if these are compatable. Knowing an animal's habits and behaviors is important. Are you are willing and able to provide the best possible care?
Some animals have simple care needs, but others especially exotics require a lot of time, effort, space and money. Knowing what an animal will need, and being honest with yourself about your ability to provide the necessary care, is extremely important. Do you really want this critter?

If it appears that the baby fell out of a nest, then simply locate the nest nearby and carefully place the bird back in the nest. Despite presistent fallacies, the parents cannot smell your odor on the baby bird, and will usually accept the young back into the nest. Young birds often fall from nests after wind storms, when the nesting sites are disturbed by construction, predators, or children, or when an older sibling kicks them out of the nest. If you cannot locate a nest, keep the bird in a suitable warm container, and contact your local SPCA or a certified wildlife care facility immediately (see contact list below). (510) 981-CITY For Immediate Release Rabid Bat Found In Berkeley Berkeley, California (Wednesday, March 31, 2004) – A bat infected with rabies was recently found in the area of 1900 block of Ninth Street in the City of Berkeley. Although the bat was removed without incident, residents in Berkeley and the surrounding areas are advised that Alameda County has been a “Rabies Area” since 1958. In Berkeley, bats and skunks are the most likely animals to be infected, although unimmunized dogs, foxes, coyotes, badgers, weasels, raccoons and unvaccinated cats can also carry the rabies virus. Rabies infection is virtually always fatal in man so it is critical that people know how to prevent infection: Avoid skunks and bats. Do not handle dead wild animals. Educate your children about the dangers of wild animals and warn them not to touch any animal they do not know.

    Garter Snake Care
Natural History Garters, due to their small size, are quick to heat up and cool down. Like most reptiles, garters warm up by basking in the sun. It may be on a rock or perhaps on a branch overhanging water. Garters can function during cool weather (down to 16 C/60 F) and in fairly warm weather (up to 34 C/93 F). They strive to maintain their body temperature range between 22-32 C (72-88 F), with their optimum range being 29-30 C (84-86 F). Hibernation Reproduction Males, upon emerging from hibernation, become sexually active sooner than the females, ensuring that females will be mated at the time they leave the den. To insure that there are in fact young in the spring, mating often occurs in late fall as well; the sperm is stored until the spring. If there is successful mating in the spring, the fall sperm is allowed to degenerate. The spring aggregations are often the time that garters are collected by humans, an unfortunate occurrence as it disrupts the natural balance of males and females and reduces the natural diversity of the gene pool of that population, weakening it and potentially affecting it's long-term survival. Garters are live bearers, with young born in the late summer (August-September, with some as late as October). The average litter size is 23.2 (10-30, with some litters recorded as high as 60 and 85 offspring). The young average 23.5 cm (9.4 in), with the smallest at 13 cm (5.2 in) and the largest at 26 cm (10.4 in). The young are independent from birth, on their own as they make their way out of the birth membrane. Young consume great quantities of prey in order to fatten up before the winter hibernation. Consuming earthworms, invertebrates and fish, they are surprisingly aggressive and able to eat prey which are large for their size. It is during this period that they are most susceptible to predation.

Box Turtle Hibernation Any box turtle that has recently been ill should not Hibernating Indoors Box turtles can be placed in a protected box (wooden or cardboard) partially filled with clean dirt (potting soil is recommended). The soil should be kept slightly damp. A layer of dead leaves or crumpled newspaper should cover the dirt A shallow dish of water should also be provided. The box can be placed in a cool area (such as a garage) and should be maintained rodent-free. The hibernating turtle should be checked periodically. During warm spells, the turtle may temporarily come out of hibernation; food should be offered at these times. Hibernating Outdoors: The hibernation period begins with inappetence in October or November in southern California and ends in March or April, depending on environmental conditions in the spring. Box turtles may be allowed to hibernate in the corner of a dog house or other similar shelter if they are allowed to burrow under some loose cover. Dead leaves or crumpled newspapers can be provided for this purpose. An alternative arrangement involves providing a protected area with loose dirt and a covering layer of dead leaves or dried lawn clippings that cannot be flooded by winter rains. Box turtles may emerge during warm spells, during which time they may feed. Food should be provided at these times as well as a shallow dish of water for soaking, if the turtle chooses to do so. Box turtles hibernating outdoors should be protected from flies, ants and predatory marauders, such as dogs, cats, rats, skunks and opossums.
