CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) Women with common, usually nonfatal forms of skin cancer face double the risk of having unrelated cancers, according to a large study, suggesting that the initial diagnosis may be more worrisome than previously thought. The skin cancer link was found for several malignancies, including cancer of the brain, breasts, lung, liver, ovaries and uterus. Previous studies have shown that men and women with skin cancer face an increased risk of skin cancer returning. Some studies also have found that people with non-melanoma skin cancer are prone to later developing non-skin cancers. But according to the new report's lead author, Dr. Carol Rosenberg of Evanston-Northwestern Healthcare, part of Northwestern University's medical school, the earlier research did not adequately consider other risk factors that might explain the connection.

NEW YORK (CNN) CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather told his audience Monday night that he recently had several cancerous growths removed from his face, and urged viewers to get examinations for skin cancer. At the end of the first block of news, the 72-year-old Rather followed a report on Iraq with what he called "a personal note about the importance of getting an examination for skin cancer." "A recent examination of my skin detected several basal cell carcinomas a very common and highly treatable form of skin cancer," he said. "The cells on my face and nose were removed during my recent absence from this broadcast. The healing process continues. A full recovery is expected. But it remains a humbling learning experience. So I thank you for your understanding and concern. And I urge you to get a skin cancer examination." Basal cell carcinoma is the least serious and most common type of skin cancer, affecting 800,000 Americans every year, according to the website of the national Skin Cancer Foundation. That accounts for 75 percent of all skin cancers, according to the American Cancer Society.

WASHINGTON (AP) Regularly baking to a golden tan under sun lamps can increase the risk of malignant melanoma, a sometimes fatal skin cancer, and the younger a woman starts the greater the risk, a study says. The study, which analyzed the lifestyles and melanoma risks for women between the ages of 30 and 50, found what the researchers said was the strongest evidence yet that artificial sun tanning can be dangerous to healthy skin. Melanoma risk is highest among fair-skinned people in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America. Since the 1950s, the rate of the skin cancer has tripled in Norway and Sweden, where light skin is common. About 50,000 cases of melanoma are diagnosed annually in the United States and about 7,500 people die of the disease each year, according to American Academy of Dermatology officials. In the study, appearing this week in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, an international group of researchers analyzed data from the Women's Lifestyle and Health Cohort Study in Norway and Sweden. In 1991 and 1992, 106,379 women completed extensive questionnaires about their exposure to sunlight and to artificial tanning. In 1999, the researchers rechecked the women's cancer status using the national health registries in Norway and Sweden.

I am a cosmetologist and I incorporate as much skin care as possible. One of my clients is a young 17 year old that has "freckles" (her discription) circling around her mouth. She said it started a couple of years ago. I suspect it is hormonal. A. Freckles are small hyperpigmented "spots" on the skin. They occur on sun exposed areas and will darken in the summer and fade in the winter. Freckles are benign and are a sign of increased sun exposure and sun related damage. Retinol creams, bleaching creams and mild acid peels are used to lighten the dark areas. As freckles are related to sun exposure, sunscreen/block is mandatory. An SPF of 30 or above is recommended. Overview
To Learn More About This Topic: Chat with Us Email Us About a million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every year. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. According to current estimates, forty to fifty percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer at least once. Although anyone can get skin cancer, the risk is if you have fair skin that freckles easily often with red or blond hair and blue or light-colored eyes. The two most common kinds of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. (Carcinoma is cancer that begins in the cells that cover or line an organ.) Basal cell carcinoma accounts for more than ninety percent of all skin cancers in the United States. It is a slow-growing cancer that seldom spreads to other parts of the body. Squamous cell carcinoma also rarely spreads, but it does so more often than basal cell carcinoma. However, it is important that skin cancers be found and treated early because they can invade and destroy nearby tissue. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are sometimes called non-melanoma skin cancer. Another type of cancer that occurs in the skin is
