The Myths and Facts of Vitamin D and Sun Exposure by Diana Clarke Unverified claims that unprotected, intentional sun exposure is necessary for Vitamin D formation are getting quite a bit of media coverage lately. Yet, dermatologists still advice the public to practice sun protection to prevent skin cancer. Melanomas often develop from preexisting moles but may also arise in normal skin and in freckles, blemishes, birthmarks, and other pigmented areas. Sun exposure is believed to be a factor in 50-70 percent of new melanomas but they can also occur in areas that are not normally exposed to sunlight. Although rare in children, melanoma occurs in every age group after puberty and is the most common cancer in young adults, ages 25-29. Most new melanoma patients have no family history of the disease; it can affect anyone regardless of health, physical condition, or skin complexion. What the risk factors are
Your risk for contracting melanoma could be higher if you have any of the following risk factors:

    144. Squamous Cell Carcinoma Of The Skin - Skin Cancer
A squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is a form of skin cancer which is usually the result of long term sun damage to the skin.
    http://www.skinsite.com/info_squamous_cell_carcinoma.htm
Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Skin I. Definition: A squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is a form of skin cancer which is usually the result of long term sun damage to the skin. Squamous cell carcinomas enlarge slowly and steadily and can invade neighboring tissue, like the eye. They can also spread to distant parts of the body (metastasize) if not treated early. The only way to tell for sure if a skin growth is cancerous is to biopsy it. This involves removing a small piece of the skin and having a pathologist look at it under the microscope in a medical laboratory. A biopsy does not remove the cancer, it only takes off the very top (like the tip of an iceberg). Sometimes the skin will heal after the biopsy because it grows over the cancer. This does not mean the cancer is gone, it means the cancer is now covered with a blanket of skin. If the cancer is not removed completely it can go deep into the skin and metastasize to the internal organs causing death. II. Causes:
    • Repeated, prolonged sun exposure causes skin damage which may develop into squamous cell carcinoma. The sun damage responsible for a squamous cell carcinoma usually occurred years before the cancer begins.

      Rating: I recommendation

Rationale: Evidence is lacking that skin examination by clinicians is effective in reducing mortality or morbidity from skin cancer. Overview
To Learn More About This Topic: Chat with Us Email Us About a million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every year. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. According to current estimates, forty to fifty percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer at least once. Although anyone can get skin cancer, the risk is if you have fair skin that freckles easily often with red or blond hair and blue or light-colored eyes. The two most common kinds of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. (Carcinoma is cancer that begins in the cells that cover or line an organ.) Basal cell carcinoma accounts for more than ninety percent of all skin cancers in the United States. It is a slow-growing cancer that seldom spreads to other parts of the body. Squamous cell carcinoma also rarely spreads, but it does so more often than basal cell carcinoma. However, it is important that skin cancers be found and treated early because they can invade and destroy nearby tissue. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are sometimes called non-melanoma skin cancer. Another type of cancer that occurs in the skin is

    Clinton skin cancer highly curable
Basal cell carcinoma different from deadly melanoma
(CNN) - The type of skin cancer that struck President Bill Clinton is one of the most common - and most curable - forms of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma accounts for about 75 percent of all skin cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. But unlike melanoma, the deadly skin cancer that struck Senator John McCain last year, basal cell carcinoma rarely spreads into other parts of the body and rarely causes death. The disease begins in the epidermis, the top layer of skin, usually on the neck and head - areas that are most exposed to the sun. Lesions may look like flat, scaly red areas or shiny raised areas. Melanomas, on the other hand, are often brown or black and look like moles. RESOURCES What does skin cancer look like?

The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA) opposes indoor tanning and supports a ban on the production and sale of indoor tanning equipment for non-medical purposes. The hazards of indoor tanning have been well documented from experimental sources as well as from epidemiologic studies and clinical observations. Unless and until the FDA bans the sale and use of tanning equipment for non-medical purposes, the AADA supports the following requirements for indoor tanning facilities:
    • No minor should be permitted to use tanning devices. A Surgeon General’s warning should be placed on all tanning devices. The warning label required of manufacturers for all tanning devices should read, “Ultraviolet radiation can cause skin cancer and other nonreversible forms of damage to the skin.” A warning sign listing instructions for correct use of the tanning device and potential hazards of incorrect use, which includes information regarding the recommended limits of weekly and yearly exposure dose and the recommended limit on the frequency of usage, should be conspicuously posted next to each tanning device.

In 1991 Professor Johan Moan of the Norwegian Cancer Institute made an astounding discovery. He found that the yearly incidence of melanoma in Norway had increased by 350% for men and by 440% for women during the period 1957 to 1984. He also determined that there had been no change in the ozone layer over this period of time. He concludes his report in the British Journal of Cancer by stating "Ozone depletion is not the cause of the increase in skin cancers"(1). SKIN CANCER There are three major forms of skin cancer. BASAL CELL CARCINOMA is the most common form of skin cancer. It occurs most frequently in men who spend a great deal of time outdoors and primarily produces lesions on the head and neck(2). Basal cell carcinoma rarely spreads throughout the body but can invade neighbouring bone and nerves(3). SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA is the second most common skin cancer. It primarily affects people who sunburn easily, tan poorly, and have blue eyes and red or blonde hair. Squamous cell carcinoma most commonly develops from actinic keratoses and can metastasize if left untreated. Squamous cell carcinoma of the lip is 12 times more common among men than among women(4).

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. An estimated 40 to 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer at least once. The most common skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma, which accounts for more than 90 percent of all skin cancers in the United States. The most virulent form of skin cancer is melanoma. In some parts of the world, especially in Western countries, the number of people who develop melanoma is increasing faster than any other cancer. In the United States, for example, the number of new cases of melanoma has more than doubled in the past 20 years. What are the most common forms of skin cancer?
