October, 2002 Download this factsheet Skin cancers are the most common form of cancer in the West, particularly in people such as farmers who are exposed to lots of sunlight. One form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma, can spread to other organs very rapidly. Successful treatment depends on catching the disease in the early stages. Around 6,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with malignant melanoma each year.
Cancers
An abnormal or uncontrolled growth of the cells that make up the skin can be benign or malignant. If this growth is able to invade neighbouring tissues or spread to distant organs in the body (metastasise), it is known as malignant.
Types of skin cancer
The main types of malignant skin cancer are:
  • malignant melanoma

Malignant melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer that can affect the legs and feet, as well as other parts of the body. In this disease, pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) become cancerous and grow and divide at an uncontrolled rate. The primary risk factor for malignant melanoma is exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV rays); but the mechanism by which UV rays cause melanoma is unknown. Melanoma is less common than other types of skin cancer (e.g., basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma), but it is more likely to spread (metastasize) via cells that break away from the original tumor, travel through the blood or lymphatic vessels, and grow within other parts of the body. Incidence and Prevalence Overall, melanoma affects men and women equally. It usually develops after age 50, although it can develop at any age and on any part of the body. Light-skinned people are more likely to develop melanoma than dark-skinned people.

skin cancer. The underlying cause of skin cancer in older people is often the accumulated damage of many years of excessive exposure to the sun.
http://www.skincarephysicians.com/agingskinnet/Cancers.html
Skin Cancer Some cancers are more common in aging skin. The underlying cause of skin cancer in older people is often the accumulated damage of many years of excessive exposure to the sun. In some cases there may be a genetic predisposition to skin cancer—either "cancer in the family" or the inheritance of a type of skin that increases risk for skin cancer. All skin cancers can be successfully treated if they are discovered and treated early. All are potentially disfiguring, and potentially fatal if they metastasize (spread) to other parts of the body. The three most common forms of skin cancer are:
  • Basal cell carcinoma —develops in 300,000 to 400,000 persons every year in the United States Squamous cell carcinoma —develops in 80,000 to 100,000 persons per year in the United States Melanoma —45,000 to 50,000 new cases are diagnosed every year in the United States. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer—6 of every 7 deaths from skin cancer in the United States are due to melanoma
Basal Cell Carcinoma Basal cell carcinoma arises in a layer of skin (basal layer) beneath the skin’s surface. It seldom metastasizes, although it may do so if the cancer invades lymph or blood vessels that can carry cancer cells to distant organs. The major spreading mechanism of basal cell carcinoma is by local invasion of surrounding skin tissue. If left untreated, it may become large and disfiguring.

    Sunscreen, Skin Cancer, and UVA
Sunscreen: you slather it on before you go to the beach. It keeps you from being fried to a crisp. It helps prevent your skin from getting that wrinkled, leathery look. And it protects you from the ultraviolet rays that cause skin cancer. Sunburn, caused by a type of ultraviolet (UV) light known as UVB, has served as a surrogate for far more serious conditions like melanoma and basal and squamous cell carcinoma, three forms of skin cancer. If you prevent sunburn, you prevent skin cancer, right? Well, that isn't the whole story. Sunscreens do protect skin from sunburn, but a scientific debate simmers about the role of lower-energy ultraviolet light in skin damage and whether current sunscreens provide adequate protection. In recent years, however, it has become apparent that a different form of ultraviolet light, called UVA, may be even more important in causing some skin disorders. Although experts still believe that UVB is responsible for much of the skin damage caused by sunlight especially sunburn UVA may be an important factor in photoaging and skin cancers. Most sunscreens do a good job blocking UVB, but fewer sunscreens filter out most of the UVA, so they do not help to prevent the beginnings of melanoma formation.

    SKIN CANCER SURGERY OVERVIEW
There are three major kinds of skin cancer: Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) and Melanoma. All of these have sun exposure as their major risk factor Once a skin cancer is diagnosed, treatment depends on multiple considerations including the type of cancer, and its location. Surgical removal of the primary cancer is the treatment of choice in many situations. Surgical removal may be done in several ways, again depending on the type of cancer and other factors. Skin cancer surgery includes several techniques including excision, Mohs Micrographic Surgery , and electrodesication and curettage. At the University of Washington Dermatologic Surgery Center, we will discuss with you the treatment options, risks and benefits depending on your individual case.
