CDS Mission The purpose of the Chicago Dermatological Society is to educate its members and guests (medical residents and students) in Dermatology and its subspecialties and to promote:
  • Excellence in patient care Adherence to a high level of ethical conduct and professionalism Dermatology related research A spirit of community among its members Public interest relating to Dermatology
History of the CDS Until 1836, there were no known doctors in the United States who specialized in diseases of the skin. On June 22, 1836, Dr. Henry D. Bulkley of New York, New York opened the Broome Street Infirmary for Diseases of the Skin. In 1845, Dr. Noah Worcester of Cincinnati, Ohio published the first complete textbook on skin diseases: A Synopsis of the Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment of the More Common and Important Diseases of the Skin. The first organized Society, the New York Dermatological Society, was established in 1869. All of the early dermatologists received their training in Europe, in Vienna, Paris or Berlin. Dr. Charles Smith was the pioneer dermatologist in Chicago. A general practitioner who later studied dermatology in Europe, he was appointed to the attending staff in the Department of Skin Diseases at Cook County Hospital in 1869. Facts About Skin Cancer Facts about skin cancer:
According to the latest statistics available from the National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
  • Cancer of the skin is the most common of all cancers in the United States. More than 1 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed in the US each year. Melanoma represents only 4 percent of all skin cancers in the US, but accounts for more than 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths. Although exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays is said to be the most important factor in the cause of skin cancers, about 70 percent of American adults do not use sun-protection measures. Most skin cancers appear after age 50, but skin damage from the sun begins at an early age. Therefore, protection should start in childhood to prevent skin cancer later in life.

New research supports earlier reports linking steroid use to nonmelanoma-type skin malignancies and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The risk of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or a form of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma was roughly two-and-a-half times greater than normal for people who reported long-term use of steroids in the Danish study. Long-term steroid use was associated with a 50% increased risk for developing basal cell carcinoma.

Sunburn and skin cancer
Skin cancer has reached epidemic proportions in Australia. Currently one in two Australians will develop the disease at some stage during their lives. There are three reasons why our levels of skin cancer are so high; our mainly fair-skinned population, Australia's harsh climate and our love for the great outdoors. Sunburn is not the only cause of skin cancer. Tanning or just too much sun, year after year, can also lead to people developing the disease. Skin cancer is very easy to prevent and can be treated successfully in 95% of cases if detected early. To find out more about sunburn, tanning and skin cancer, choose from our menu below or search this site for specific information. Sunburn Tanning Solariums Skin Cancer ... SunSmart
