Some form of skin cancer is diagnosed in more than 1 million people in the United States each year. Cancer occurs when normal cells undergo a transformation during which they grow and multiply without normal controls.
  • As the cells multiply, they form a mass called a tumor. Tumors of the skin are often referred to as lesions.
Tumors are cancerous only if they are malignant. This means that they encroach on and invade neighboring tissues (especially lymph nodes) because of their uncontrolled growth.
They may also travel to remote organs via the bloodstream.

What is skin cancer?
Cancer is a disease in which certain body cells don't function right, divide very fast, and produce too much tissue that forms a tumor. The skin is the body's largest organ. It protects us against heat, light, injury, and infection. It regulates body temperature and stores water, fat, and vitamin D. The two most common kinds of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The most serious kind of skin cancer is called melanoma.
Why should I be concerned about skin cancer?
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. The number of new cases of skin cancer appears to be rising each year. The number of deaths due to skin cancer, though, is fairly small. The good news is that skin cancer is now almost 100% curable if found early and treated promptly. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. Artificial sources of UV radiation, such as sunlamps and tanning booths, can also cause skin cancer. Although anyone can get skin cancer, the risk is greatest for people who have fair skin that freckles easily often those with red or blond hair and blue or light-colored eyes. Most skin cancers appear after age 50, but the sun's damaging effects begin at an early age. So, protection should start in childhood to prevent skin cancer later in life.

Introduction
Each year, about a million people in the United States learn that they have skin cancer . This National Cancer Institute (NCI) booklet will give you some important information about this disease. It explains how skin cancer is diagnosed and treated and has information about preventing this disease. Words that may be new to readers appear in italics . Definitions of these words and other terms related to skin cancer can be found in the Dictionary . For some words, a "sounds-like" spelling is also given. Other NCI booklets are listed in the Other Booklets section. Our materials cannot answer every question you may have about skin cancer. They cannot take the place of talks with doctors, nurses, and other members of the health care team. We hope our information will help with those talks. Research has led to better methods of diagnosing and treating this disease. It is encouraging to know that skin cancer is now almost 100 percent curable if found early and treated promptly.

OVERVIEW OF PREVENTION
Prevention
Doctors can not always explain why one person gets cancer and another does not. However, scientists have studied general patterns of cancer in the population to learn what things around us and what things we do in our lives may increase our chance of developing cancer. Anything that increases a person's chance of developing a disease is called a risk factor; anything that decreases a person's chance of developing a disease is called a protective factor. Some of the risk factors for cancer can be avoided, but many can not. For example, although you can choose to quit smoking, you can not choose which genes you have inherited from your parents. Both smoking and inheriting specific genes could be considered risk factors for certain kinds of cancer, but only smoking can be avoided. Prevention means avoiding the risk factors and increasing the protective factors that can be controlled so that the chance of developing cancer decreases.

OVERVIEW OF SCREENING
What is screening?
Screening for cancer is examination (or testing) of people for early stages in the development of cancer even though they have no symptoms. Scientists have studied patterns of cancer in the population to learn which people are more likely to get certain types of cancer. They have also studied what things around us and what things we do in our lives may cause cancer. This information sometimes helps doctors recommend who should be screened for certain types of cancer, what types of screening tests people should have, and how often these tests should be done. Not all screening tests are helpful, and most have risks such as scar or infection after a biopsy for a suspicious skin nodule or mole. For this reason, scientists at the National Cancer Institute are studying many screening tests to find out how useful they are and to determine the relative benefits and harms.

The campaign kicks off this week Over a third of parents say their children have suffered sunburn, a survey reveals.
The poll also reveals that 41% like to see their children with a tan. Cancer Research UK ,which commissioned the survey, said the findings showed many parents were failing to take skin cancer warnings seriously. The findings were published to mark a new public awareness campaign, which will see posters in nurseries, GP surgeries and outlets of Boots. Nationwide campaign The poster, created for Cancer Research UK's SunSmart campaign, has been designed to highlight how quickly children's skin can burn in the sun. It features the slogan "Kids Cook Quick" along with a picture of two sunburnt children sitting on the beach. Some 19,000 posters will be distributed across the UK. It is vital that parents are aware of the dangers
Dr Catherine Harwood "This poster has been created to help remind parents to protect their children," said campaign coordinator Sara Hiom.

A new treatment could be available in 15 years
Scientists have discovered a common element in 70% of malignant skin cancers which could become a revolutionary new treatment. Experts have high hopes for the discovery because the previously unknown mutation is very similar to another that helps cause a type of leukaemia. In trials, a drug which blocks that gene has already been outstandingly successful in treating leukaemia patients. The defect is not inherited and no-one yet knows what causes it, but it is believed to be a very powerful mutation.
It could be a direct lead to new treatments for malignant melanoma
Professor Mike Stratton, Cancer Genome Project If it can be isolated, it is hoped it can be turned into a treatment for malignant melanoma. The breakthrough, announced in an online report from the journal Nature, is the first to emerge from the Cancer Genome Project, based at Hinxton, Cambridgeshire.

CHICAGO (Reuters) Drinking four or more cups of green tea a day may help stave off skin cancer and the substance could be similarly effective if incorporated into skin care creams, researchers said Monday. The brew, which is especially popular in Asia, where cancer is rarer than in the West, contains antioxidants that are known to prevent skin cancer in mice and may prevent it in humans, a report summarizing recent research into green tea said.

The treatment is called photodynamic therapy and uses skin cream and concentrated light to activate the cream, which kills cancer cells. It is used in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, but a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee last year recommended against U.S. approval. Basal cell skin cancer, often caused by overexposure to sunlight, is diagnosed in about 2 million people worldwide each year, making it among the most common cancers. It is also among the most curable. Surgical removal is generally the preferred treatment, but since basal cell cancers typically appear on or around the face, some patients worry about scarring. The new study, published in Monday's Archives of Dermatology, involved 101 patients who received either surgery or two treatment sessions a week apart with Metvix, also known as methyl aminolevulinate cream.

  • Introduction
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma Introduction
Skin cancer is the most common form of human cancer. It is estimated that over 1 million new cases occur annually. The annual rates of all forms of skin cancer are increasing each year, representing a growing public concern. It has also been estimated that nearly half of all Americans who live to age 65 will develop skin cancer at least once. The most common warning sign of skin cancer is a change in the appearance of the skin, such as a new growth or a sore that will not heal. The term "skin cancer" refers to three different conditions. From the least to the most dangerous, they are:
    • basal cell carcinoma (or basal cell carcinoma epithelioma)
    • squamous cell carcinoma
    • melanoma
The two most common forms of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Together, these two are also referred to as nonmelanoma skin cancer. Melanoma is generally the most serious form of skin cancer because it tends to spread (metastasize) throughout the body quickly.

Skin cancer
VOL 107 / NO 7 / JUNE 2000 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE Skin cancer is a major risk for sun worshippers and is definitely on the rise in the United States. In fact, one of every five Americans will have skin cancer at some time during his or her life. The good news is that this type of cancer can almost always be curedprovided it is found early. Unfortunately, the incidence of melanoma, the most deadly type of skin cancer, is increasing faster than that of any other cancer. Types of skin cancer
The three major types of skin cancers are called basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. The basal cell and squamous cell types most often occur on areas of the skin that are regularly exposed to the sun, such as the face, the back of the hands, and the ears. People who spend many hours in the sun, such as landscape workers, farmers, and construction or highway crews, tend to be at the greatest risk for these cancers. Melanoma, on the other hand, tends to occur on areas of the body not exposed to the sun on a regular basis. This type of cancer is more common in people who work indoors and have limited but sometimes intense exposure to the sun on weekends or during vacations. Children whose unprotected skin is exposed to the sun a lot during the first 15 years of their lives are also at increased risk of melanoma as adults. What are the signs?

The skin is the largest organ in our body. It provides protection against heat, cold, light, and infection. The skin is made up of two major layers (epidermis and dermis) as well as various types of cells. The top (or outer) layer of the skin—the epidermis—is composed of three types of cells: flat, scaly cells on the surface called squamous cells; round cells called basal cells; and melanocytes, cells that provide skin its color and protect against skin damage. The inner layer of the skin—the dermis—is the layer that contains the nerves, blood vessels, and sweat glands. What Is Skin Cancer? Skin cancer is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the outer layers of your skin. There are several types of cancer that originate in the skin. The most common types are basal cell carcinoma (70 percent of all skin cancers) and squamous cell carcinoma (20 percent). These types are classified as nonmelanoma skin cancer. Melanoma (five percent of all skin cancers) is the third type of skin cancer. It is less common than basal cell or squamous cell skin cancer, but potentially much more serious. Other types of skin cancer are rare. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer. It typically appears as a small raised bump that has a pearly appearance. It is most commonly seen on areas of the skin that have received excessive sun exposure. These cancers may spread to the skin around the cancer but rarely spread to other parts of the body.
