WHAT IS SKIN CANCER?
It is a disease where cancer ( malignant ) cells are found in the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). Skin cancers can develop from a build-up of sun exposure over the years. There are 3 types of skin cancer.
1. Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that occurs on areas exposed to the sun. People with fair complexions who do not tan easily, are most at risk. Basal cell cancers do not usually spread through the body although it can spread below to the bone. Normally it's not life threatening but should be treated immediately.
Causes: Overexposure to ultra violet (UV) rays of the sun.
Diagnosis: Biopsy which is the removal by surgery of a sample of tissue for examination under a microscope to check forcancer. This is a simple and quick procedure. If the growth was only partially removed by the biopsy and is found to be cancerous, then the entire growth will be removed.
Warning Signs: How do you identify basal cell carcinoma?

Skin Cancer
Each year more than a million people in the United States are diagnosed with the most common forms of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. These two diseases are most often grouped as non-melanoma skin cancers. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 1.3 million new cases of non-melanoma skin cancers will be diagnosed in the United States this year, making these two combined the most common cancer in the United States. Most people who are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancers are age 50 or older, but because these diseases often are a result of too much exposure to the sun, everyone even the youngest toddlers should take precautions against them.
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the single most important cause of skin cancer, especially when the overexposure resulted in sunburn and blistering. Other, less common causes of skin cancer include repeated exposure to x-rays and exposure to coal tar, arsenic, and other industrial compounds. Sunlight provides much that is beneficial and even necessary to life and good health. Tanning and burning, however, are not among those benefits there is no such thing as a "healthy tan."

About Us Mohs Surgery Dermatology Liposuction ... Hair Transplantation Our Center in the Chicago downtown loop area is dedicated to the highest level of patient care. We specialize in surgical dermatology, including skin cancer detection and treatment. We offer the latest techniques in dermatologic cosmetic surgery, including Mohs micrographic surgery, hair transplantation, scar correction, laser hair removal, fat injection (microlipoinjection or fat transfer), liposuction, weekend facelift, and eyelid lift (blepharoplasty). We treat a variety of dermatologic conditions, including alopecia, acne, rosacea, warts, moles, skin cancer, melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma. We transfer fat uniquely Recently, we have learned a great deal about the aging face. While before, it was thought that the skin becomes more flabby or loose, now we realize that the deep wrinkle formations and hollow areas of the face are greatly due to loss of facial tissue. As we age, fat disappears from the cheek bones, mid face, chin, and lips, and seems to accumulate in the jawline and neck. Other conditions, like trauma, acne scarring, HIV infection or HIV medications can also lead to facial fat loss. Recently, a new technique has been developed to turn back the clock and restore lost fat. The procedure is called microlipoinjection (also known as fat transfer, fat injection, and fat cell transplantation). In this procedure, fat is gently removed from a fatty area, and then meticulously layered in the areas of the face requiring it. The fat graft then takes root in the new area and persists. The injection sites heal with virtually no visible scar. The procedure is performed comfortably and safely with local anesthesia, allowing for a quick recovery.

It explains how skin cancer is diagnosed and treated and has information about preventing this disease. Other NCI booklets are listed in the Other Booklets section. Our materials cannot answer every question you may have about skin cancer. They cannot take the place of talks with doctors, nurses, and other members of the health care team. We hope our information will help with those talks. Research has led to better methods of diagnosing and treating this disease. It is encouraging to know that skin cancer is now almost 100 percent curable if found early and treated promptly.

Cancer isn't one disease, but a group of diseases, which cause cells in the body to change and grow out of control. Most types of cancer cells form a lump or mass called a tumour. Only a few cancers don't form a tumour, such as blood cancers (leukemia). Cells from a tumour can break away and travel to other parts of the body and, from there, continue to grow. This spreading is called metastasis. When cancer spreads - for instance, if breast cancer spreads to the lungs - it is still named after the part of the body where it originated. In this case, it is still breast cancer, not lung cancer. A cancerous tumour is called a malignant tumour. Tumours, however, are not all cancerous. Tumours that are not cancerous are called benign. In most cases, benign tumours are not life threatening, and do not grow and spread the way cancer does.

The Burden of Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. The three major types of skin cancer are the highly curable basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas and the more serious malignant melanoma. The American Cancer Society estimates that during 2003, about 1 million new cases of basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma and about 54,200 new cases of malignant melanoma will be diagnosed. It is also expected that skin cancer will claim the lives of approximately 9,800 Americans.
Exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays appears to be the most important environmental factor involved in the development of skin cancer. When used consistently, sun-protective practices can prevent skin cancer. UV rays from artificial sources of light, such as tanning beds and sunlamps, are as dangerous as those from the sun and should also be avoided. Although both tanning and burning can increase a person's risk for skin cancer, most Americans do not consistently protect themselves from UV rays. A recent survey sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that approximately 43% of white children under age 12 had at least one sunburn during the past year.

The Choose Your Cover Campaign (CYC) was a 5–year skin cancer prevention and education campaign sponsored by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The campaign emphasized that young people can have fun outdoors, while still protecting their skin from the sun, by choosing five sun protection options: seeking shade, covering up, getting a hat, wearing sunglasses, and rubbing on sunscreen. Although CYC campaign activities concluded May 2003, all of the materials—

Research unlocks genetic secret of skin cancer's spread
(AP) Two research teams have identified genes that appear to make skin cancer spread, raising the prospect of quicker diagnosis and better treatments for the most dangerous tumors. The two groups separately analyzed a type of cancer known as melanoma. Each study identified a set of genes that are active in highly invasive growths. Some genes were common to both studies.
