The Skin Cancer Resources Directory Home Cancer Types Skin Cancer Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer and accounts for half of all new cancers in Western populations. It occurs more often in people with light coloured skin who have had a high exposure to sunlight. The two most frequent types of skin cancer are Basal Cell Carcinomas and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (often grouped under "non-melanoma skin cancer"). The third most frequent skin cancer is Melanoma, this is a malignancy of the cells which give the skin it's colour (melanocytes). In addition there are a number of other, less common cancers starting in the skin including Merkel cell tumours, cutaneous lymphomas, and sarcomas (see the pages on sarcoma and lymphoma in this guide).

Skin Cancer Skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers. It is estimated that more than one million Americans develop skin cancer every year. Sun avoidance is the best defense against skin cancer.
Over exposure to sunlight (including tanning) is the main cause of skin cancer especially when it results in sunburn and blistering. Other less important factors include: repeated medical and industrial x-ray exposure, scarring from diseases or burns, occupational exposure to such compounds as coal tar and arsenic, and family history. Fair-skinned people who sunburn easily are at particularly high risk for skin cancer. Prevention means guarding the skin against the known causes of skin cancer. Since the sun's ultraviolet rays are the main culprit, the most effective preventive method is sun avoidance.
  • Seek shade between 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. when the ultraviolet rays are the most intense, especially when your shadow is shorter than you are tall.

    What Causes Skin Cancer?
    Sunburn and Sunlight
Very simply, sunburn and UV light can damage your skin, and this damage can lead to skin cancer. There are of course other determining factors, including your heredity and the environment you live in. However, both the total amount of sun received over the years, and overexposure resulting in sunburn can cause skin cancer. Most people receive 80% of their lifetime exposure to the sun by 18 years of age. The message to parents from this is to

S kin Cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and usually occurs in fair-skinned individuals who have been exposed to the sun, x-rays, or ultraviolet (UV) light for prolonged periods. Skin cancers affect approximately 600,000 Caucasians every year.    T he principal cause of skin cancer almost universally accepted by medical experts is overexposure to sunlight, especially when it results in sunburn and blistering. Avoiding sun overexposure is the best defense against skin cancer. And, catching problems early, provides a better chance for successful treatment.

Daily Wine News > Current Headlines Red-Wine Compound Shows Potential for Fighting Skin Cancer Posted: Thursday, May 01, 2003 By Jacob Gaffney A component of red wine already thought to have health benefits is now being investigated as a possible treatment for skin cancer. In a recent lab experiment at Marshall University in West Virginia, resveratrol was found to destroy human skin-cancer cells. Now the researchers plan further tests to see if the red-wine compound inhibits the growth of melanoma in mice. Several previous studies have found that resveratrol a polyphenol found in grapes, red wine and peanuts may help fight some forms of cancer ; it is currently being tested as a possible anti-cancer drug In the Marshall University experiment, published in the Feb. 20 issue of Cancer Letters, scientists from the department of biochemistry and molecular biology placed different amounts of resveratrol ranging from 5 to 100 micromolars (a measurement of a compound's concentration in a solution) in dishes with two different strains of melanoma cells. The resveratrol was left in contact with the cancer cells for up to 72 hours. At higher doses, the cancer cells died more quickly. For example, one strain of melanoma in a solution of 100 micromolars of resveratrol was completely eradicated in 48 hours.

Skin Cancer Treatment and Prevention Based on Pancreatin Enzymes
This web site presents skin cancer treatment and prevention information to enable natural healing of squamous or basal cell carcinoma. Practical strategies for skin cancer prevention and treatment based on enhancing the body's natural defenses are provided, including descriptions of topical home remedies.
Recurring problems with basal and squamous cell carcinoma are common because traditional treatment methods focus only on removing the skin cancer symptoms (the lesions) instead of eliminating their causes. This alternative approach identifies several important underlying causes of squamous or basal cell carcinoma beyond excessive sun exposure. Understanding and targeting the causes and mechanisms of skin cancer can lead to its control through changes in lifestyle, diet, cosmetics, and nutritional supplements. As will be explained, three factors are necessary for cancers to exist. The most familiar of these factors is cell damage, often caused by sun exposure in the case of skin cancer. Despite prior cell damage, skin cancer does not have to be inevitable or unstoppable.
