TV Schedule THE BASICS: Races are split into two disciplines short track at the Salt Lake Ice Center and long track at the Utah Olympic Oval. There are four events each for men and women in short track and five events each in long track. Long track pairs two skaters at a time racing against the clock. Short track is more like a roller derby race. U.S. FORECAST: Here's a tip. If you want to impress your neighbors, start talking about Apolo Anton Ohno in the next day or two. Snowboarding
Snowboarding is relatively new and growing very quickly in popularity. M.J. "Jack" Burchett built the first snowboard out of a plank of plywood in 1929 and secured it to his feet with some clothesline and horse reins. It wasn’t until 30 years later that Sherman Poppen, a chemical engineer in Muskegon, Michigan, invented "The Snurfer" as a toy for his daughter. He made the Snurfer by binding two skis together and putting a rope at the nose, so the rider could hold it and keep it more stable. Commercial production of snowboards was started in 1969 by Dimitrije Milovich.

    Competition
In 1994, snowboarding was declared as an Olympic sport but it wasn’t until the 1998 Olympics that snowboarding event were held. There are two Olympic snowboard competitions: halfpipe and parallel giant slalom with both male and female events. Halfpipe is all about technique and expression. The halfpipe competition takes place in a half-cylinder-shaped course dug deep into the hill. The pipe is generally 3 to 4 meters deep and 110 meters long with an 85-degree pitch and high vertical walls on each side. Using speed gained on the slope, snowboarders come up over the rim of the pipe and perform acrobatic aerial tricks. The object of the halfpipe is to perform difficult tricks with perfect form.

    Gender verification at the Olympics
For the past 30 years, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been routinely checking female Olympic competitors to determine whether they are genuinely female, but the Committee has wisely decided to abandon such gender verification for games in Sydney. Critics of the IOC's new policy contend that it ensures that transvestites will mount the medal platforms at the Sydney games, but the likelihood that a male masquerading as a female will actually garner gold, silver, or bronze is quite remote. To understand why no more than a small handful of males will be competing in female events, we need to understand why Olympic officials have been concerned about the gender of female athletes and why athletes' sexual identities are not automatically determined by the classical 'XX' or 'XY' chromosomal compositions. In the early days of the modern Olympics, gender verification was not a pressing issue (not so in the original Olympic Games, however, when only men were allowed to compete - and the maleness of the competition was ensured by a rule which required all competitors to romp around in the nude). The founder of the modern games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, actually wanted the Olympics to remain a male-only 'club'. As a result, only 19 women took part in the 1900 games, and there were just 57 females at the 1912 Olympics; naturally this limited participation in female events ensured that the number of transvestites and transsexuals would be small.

    80. Sport Information
One new olympic sport will be introduced in Atlanta Official Medal sport in Barcelona,1992; Basketball 1904, St 1984, Los Angeles; Water skiing 1972, Munich
    http://www.ausport.gov.au/info/factsheets/demo.html
Olympic Factsheets Since 1904 there have been a variety of demonstration sports held as part of the Games but not as official events eligible for medals. Some of the events have later become official sports, such as basketball, badminton, baseball and tennis. Originally, demonstration sports and events were included as an opportunity to showcase sports or events which were unique to the country hosting the Games. They have since evolved into a much more important aspect of the Olympic Games. Today, participation in the Olympics (Winter or Summer) as a demonstration sport or event often serves as a stepping stone in the application for consideration as a future Olympic sport. The sport must first be recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) under the conditions that it has an International Federation (IF) and that this Federation has held a World Championship competition. The sport may then be included as a demonstration sport, and the sport's International Federation may make an application to the IOC for consideration as an Olympic Sport. This application process must take place a minimum of six years before a scheduled Olympic Games. The demonstration sports at Barcelona were Taekwondo (a form of Martial Arts), Roller Hockey and Basque pelota, a local ball game, having appeared in Paris in 1924 and Mexico in 1968. There are no proposed demonstration sports on the Atlanta programme. One new Olympic sport will be introduced in Atlanta - women's softball; and three new disciplines will be introduced - women's soccer, mountain bike racing and beach volleyball. Sports that have been demonstration sports in the past, include:
