WINTER OLYMPICS FREESTYLE SKIING
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1992 FREESTYLE SKIING is a product of America in the 1960s, when social change and freedom of expression led to new and exciting skiing techniques. Originally a mix of alpine skiing and acrobatics, freestyle skiing developed over the decades into the present-day Olympic sport. The International Ski Federation (FIS) recognized freestyle as a sport in 1979 and brought in new regulations regarding certification of athletes and jump techniques in an effort to curb the dangerous elements of the competitions. The first World Cup series was staged in 1980 and the first World Championships took place in 1986 in Tignes, France, featuring moguls, aerials and ballet. Shortly after its World Championships debut, the IOC selected freestyle skiing as a demonstration event at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. With the World Cup circuit firmly in place under the FIS, the popularity of the sport was growing rapidly. Freestyle skiing proved a success in Calgary, and the IOC decided to add freestyle to the Olympic program in Albertville. Much to the dismay of national freestyle federations, however, the IOC only accepted moguls into the program, leaving out aerials and ballet. In Albertville, the freestyle competitions were extremely successful. The FIS and Lillehammer Olympic Organizing Committee urged the IOC to add aerials competition to the Lillehammer program. The IOC approved the addition of aerials prior to the 1994 Olympics, and there have been four freestyle medal events at the last two Olympic Winter Games. The freestyle discipline of ballet has not been accepted in the Olympic program.

WINTER OLYMPICS ALPINE SKIING
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1936 People began strapping skis to their feet as far back as 5000 years ago. It is believed that Norwegians were the first - they used skis as a way of hunting across snow-covered terrain. From Norway, skiing spread throughout Scandinavia and Russia as a mode of winter transportation and eventually as a sport similar to cross-country skiing. Alpine skiing evolved from cross-country skiing. The first alpine skiing competition, a primitive downhill, was held in the 1850s in Oslo. A few decades later, the sport spread to the remainder of Europe and to the United States, where miners held skiing competitions to entertain themselves during the winter. The first slalom was organized in 1922 in Mürren, Switzerland, and two years later such a race became the first Olympic Alpine event. The Arlberg-Kandahar, a combined slalom and downhill event, is now referred to as the first legitimate Alpine event - the race that planted the seed for Alpine's inclusion in the Olympic program. ALPINE SKIING is made up of technical events (slalom and giant slalom) and speed events (downhill and super giant slalom). Alpine skiing became part of the Olympic program at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games with a men's and women's combined event, featuring a downhill and two slalom runs. After the cancellation of the following two Games because of war, alpine skiing returned to St. Moritz 1948 with a program of six events. The Oslo Games in 1952 welcomed giant slalom to the program and marked the departure of the combined event. The combined event did not return until 1988. The addition of super-G in 1988 completed the 10-event program that exists today.

Background Information Sports and the Olympic Tradition - An Important Part of Slovenia's Cultural Heritage March 2001 "You are a small country but great at sport!" These were the words of the President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch, who visited Slovenia in 1993, describing the extremely rapid development of sport and Olympic ideas in the country. Upon becoming an individual member of the Olympic family in 1992, new horizons opened up for the development of sport and Olympic ideals in Slovenia. Sport and the Olympic tradition are important parts of Slovenia's cultural heritage. In his book Slava vojvodine Kranjske ("The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola") the renowned historian Janez Vajkard Valvasor wrote about the skiers of the Blo¹ka planota (Bloke plain) as early as 1689. The early gymnastic clubs that formed in the mid-19th century brought sports closer to people and made a significant contribution to shaping Slovenian national consciousness. The development of modern sport in Slovenia is inseparably connected to the engineer
