Brief history of the Winter Olympic Games
Even if there were ice figure skating already in the London Olympics in 1908 and in Amsterdam 1920 together with an ice hockey tournament, the first Winter Olympic Games took place in Chamonix, France in 1924. In the first Games there were Nordic Skiing, Nordic Jumping, Bobsleigh, Skeleton, Ice Hockey, Speed Skating and Figure skating for men, women and pairs.
1924 – 1992 the Olympic Winter Games were arranged the same years as the Olympic Summer Games. From 1994 the Winter Games is arranged every fourth year, two years after the Summer Games.

History of the Winter Olympics
The history of the Winter Olympic Games begins in 1908 when figure skating made it's appearance in the London Games. The Games organizers in Berlin wanted to add a Skiing Olympia to the 1916 games but that was cancelled with the outbreak of World War One. Something that would repeat itself in the history of the olympic games. Slowly but surely the winter sports grew in breadth and support. The 1920 Antwerp Summer Games in Belgium included ice hockey that saw Canada winning the first Gold medal for that event. Finally in 1924 the International Olympic Committee sanctioned an International Winter Sports Week at Chamonix, France.

They include scenes of ski -joring behind horses, cars, even airplanes, ski races up main strees, oxen erecting rope tows and all those places where people enjoy winter. From Maine to Connecticut, these scenes depict winters that seemed to have deeper drifts and higher snow banks. Olympic Games, Spirit and Modern History
" The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."
Olympic Creed
The Olympic Movement
The first recorded Ancient Games was held in 776 B.C. in ancient Europe, but evidence suggests that Games were being held long before that. Originally, competition consisted of a single foot race over a distance of 200 meters, but within a short time, the event grew to include five sports or a pentathlon. The "Olympiad" became an important event and was held every four years. During Olympic years, warring city-states were encouraged to lay down their weapons and to compete in peace on the playing field instead of on the battlefield. The Olympic Games were canceled in 394 A.D. for religious reasons. Greece, as part of the Roman Empire, had become Christian and the games were considered Pagan. Centuries later, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator and historian, recommended that the Olympic Games be restored. Coubertin believed in the spirit of Olympism; a set of values that enhance the physical, intellectual and spiritual growth of participants through sport, art and music, while promoting friendship and understanding throughout the world. Due to his work, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established and Athens, Greece had the honor of being the first city to host the modern Games in the year l896. June 23, l896 was designated as "Olympic Day" throughout the world.

U.S. Ski and Snowboard Teams Wrap-up Record Olympics
by The U.S. Ski Team Newsdesk
Park City, Utah Feb. 25, 2002 (USSA)U.S. Ski and Snowboard athletes wrapped up the 2002 Olympic Winter Games with a list of record Olympic performances and achieved the organization's long-stated goal of winning a record 10 medals. "This was a team effort and we take a great deal of pride in the accomplishments of these athletes, especially in achieving our team goal," said U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team President and CEO Bill Marolt. Marolt established the ten-medal goal over three years ago, four more than the previous high mark of six set in Nagano. "We knew coming into these Games that ten medals was a stretch for us, but our athletes achieved it," he said. "Bode Miller's silvers in alpine skiing are a tremendous accomplishment," said Marolt. "And, much as we had expected, snowboard and freestyle continue to be very strong sports for us. We're also very pleased with the progress we saw in the nordic events, especially nordic combined where we had U.S. bests in all three of the events including a fourth in the team competition, and cross country skiing where we had Olympic bests on both the men's and women's side, including a fifth-place finish for the men in the relay!" It was a record-setting Olympics in nearly every sport for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team including:

Alpine Skiing: Kostelic Leads Rush To Alpine Gold
Croatia's Janica Kostelic raised the Olympic bar for alpine skiing by claiming four Olympic medals in a single Games, and also matched the records of Jean-Claude Killy (FRA) and Toni Sailer (AUT) by claiming three golds.

Janica Kostelic of Croatia competes in the women's slalom during the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games at the Deer Valley Resort.
Kostelic wasn't the only succesful skier during the two weeks of alpine competition. Men's World Cup overall points leader Stephan Eberharter (AUT) won a medal of each color, capping his Olympics with a dominating performance in winning the giant slalom. He claimed a bronze behind teammate Fritz Strobl (AUT) in the Games' most prestigious event, the men's downhill, then settled for silver behind record-setting Kjetil Andre Aamodt (NOR), who also won the combined gold to push his unprecedented medal haul to seven.
Bode Miller (USA) provided much of the best slalom skiing during the Games. A scintillating second run of slalom moved him up to a silver-medal finish in the combined, and a strong second run gave him a second silver in the giant slalom behind Eberharter.
