We have hundreds of trails in two national parks, nine national forests, 12 wilderness areas as well as numerous lodges and resorts with private trail systems, there's plenty of room for everyone. Some of America's premier cross-country resorts are in Montana, offering you guided wilderness and wildlife tours, perfectly groomed trails and expert instruction. Ski or skate on groomed tracks, or choose from hundreds of miles of ungroomed trails on public lands. Take a guided wildlife tour or rent a remote forest service cabin and ski into it with your bed and board on your back. Montana's privately owned cross-country ski resorts celebrate winter providing comfortable accommodations that range from snug cabins to full-service lodges. Many people don't think of going to Glacier National Park or Yellowstone National Park in the winter. That in itself is a good reason for you to go; you may have acres of white backcountry all to yourself. THE PARKS IN WINTER

In Manitoba provincial parks, winter is a season worth celebrating. Cross-country skiing is an excellent way to get some fresh air and exercise in the great outdoors. On groomed trails sheltered by thick forests, even the coldest day can become a memorable outing. Enjoy the pristine winter scenery and visit places not accessible in summer. Glide effortlessly through silent forests, past cliffs and across frozen lakes. Be dazzled by the sun glittering off fields of snow. Listen to the rhythmic swish of the skis. Test your skills and endurance by zipping down hill or finishing a steep climb. For a new experience try a moonlight ski. Whether you go for an hour or stay for a weekend, cross-country skiing is an invigorating and enjoyable winter activity. Choose from a variety of trails in Manitoba provincial parks. Your destination is limited only by the distance you want to travel, the skill level of your group and whether you want to soak in a hot tub afterward.

"Alpine (downhill) skiing is one of the rare opportunities available, which allows the blind individual to move freely at speed through time and space. An opportunity to embrace and commune with the primal force of gravity, thus experiencing the sheer exhilaration of controlled mass in motion, in a physically independent setting." Brian Santos, Paralympic Champion
Alpine skiing is practiced by all B categories (B1, B2, B3). Blind skiing has been a part of disabled skiing from the beginning. The earliest disabled competitions, (1970s) included the blind. Since then the blind have competed in every Paralympics and World Championships.
Alpine skiing for the blind and visually impaired is a team sport, as the use of a sighted guide is employed to efficiently guide the blind or visually impaired skier through a race course.

ISU Home The Cooperative Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor Group (CW HOG), a regional self-help group, was established in 1981 to provide recreational opportunities for people of all abilities. The program is a part of Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho.
CW HOG has established four goals:
Provide challenging outdoor adventure activities in a supportive environment. Establish a supportive social network for people with disabilities and able-bodied individuals. Further societal integration by building ties between individuals with disabilities and other community members. Educate the community to accept and value people with disabilities.
From within the security of a supportive peer group, individuals redefine their physical and emotional boundaries. Activites are directed by group consensus and are not watered down or contrived. Through self direction, participants gain the skills to initiate activities independently and for the benefit of the group. Anyone can become a part of CW HOG. If you are involved with the program you are considered a "HOG". Participants include indivduals of all abilities and ages.

In Hetta there is a total of 120 km maintained ski tracks, of which 10 km is lit. The network of ski tracks is at its most extensive during the spring season, between March and April. In spring tracks additional tracks are made through the Pallas-Ounas National Park, to Pallas and Ounas. Both Vuontispirtti area and Kilpisjärvi have approx. 50 km of maintained ski tracks. The Kilpisjärvi ski season continues well into June, depending on the spring weather. On the slopes of Jeahkatstunturi is a 10 km long "last snow" ski track, which tries to stay open until the traditional Kilpisjärvi Midsummer Cross-country competition. Telemark and Off-piste skiing

    HOW SKIING STARTED
The history of skiing goes back several thousand years to post-glacial stone-age people who lived in the northern latitudes of Europe and Russia. Skis made it possible for them to survive the harsh winters by hunting game. The Rodoy rock carvings above the arctic circle in Norway are at least 4500 years old and depict a man on long runners with a hunting implement in hand. Ski artifacts of all sizes have been dug out of peat bogs in the Scandinavian countries indicating wide use of the over-snow runners. The first written account of skiing appears circa 1000 A.D. in the Viking "Sagas" where several kings are described as being superb skiers. In 1206, during the Norwegian civil war, two scouts on skis carried the infant heir to the throne 35 miles to safety in the middle of winter. The historic event is celebrated today by the "Birchleg Race" over the same route so called because the scouts wrapped their legs in birch bark to keep them warm and dry. Another traditional ski race takes place every year in Sweden. The Vasaloppet Cross Country race (53 miles) honors Gustav Vasa's ski trip in 1523 when he raised an army and beat the Danes who were then in control of the country.
