Isabelle and Paul Duchesnay
Paul was born in France. Isabelle was born in Canada. They were both raised in Canada and competed for same until they became dissatisfied with their progress. Feeling too restricted, they took advantage of Paul's dual citizenship and decided to compete for France in 1985, where success has brought them a rabid fan following. In the end, I find it totally irrelevant that they compete for France.

The men's competition had fewer surprises. Alexei Yagudin was the clear winner; the brilliant Russian skater left his competitors behind with his flawless, artistic routines. Yagudin's fellow countryman and bitter rival, Evgeni Plushenko, took the silver medal, while the United States' Timothy Goebel earned the bronze with his clean routines and effortless quadruple jumps. Learn About the Problem
Figure skaters look so graceful as they glide and leap on the ice, making their rigorous routines appear effortless. But there are actually many forces at work while figure skating. Learn about the relationship between a figure skater's velocity, the acceleration, and the radius of a circle skated in Physics Explorer: Circular Motion I Continue on to learn about the force needed to keep the skater moving in a circle in the activity Physics Explorer: Circular Motion II Think About the Problem
During any major figure-skating competition, we start speaking a language that includes terms such as "triple salchow," "toe loop," and "lutz." These are the names of complex jumps that skaters perform by manipulating their skate blades in very precise ways.

Stars on Ice Past Skaters
The Stars on Ice tour has featured some of the biggest names in professional figure skating since its inception. The following are some, though not all, of the major skaters that have been in the tour in recent years.
Josee Chouinard: Often a teammate's of Kurt's in the World Team Championship, as well as an Olympic team member in 1992 and 1994, Josee Choinard is a talented skater and three-time Canadian Ladies Champion. She has appeared in Kurt's You Must Remember This special, as well as Snowden, and is a good friend of Kurt. Kurt in fact wrote the foreword to Josee's new autobiography (published in 2002), All That Glitters . She was a member of the Canadian Stars on Ice cast until 2001, her last with Stars on Ice.

David Pelletier
David Pelletier was born on November 22, 1974, in Sayabec, Québec. He spent his childhood in Lachine, Quebéc, although he trained as a young skater in Boucheville with coaches Josée Picard and Eric Gilles. Pelletier has competed at the national level as both a pair skater and a single skater and has achieved international success in pairs, when he represented Canada with partner Allison Gaylor at the 1995 world championships. David Pelletier's first pairs partner was a Julie Laporte. Together, Julie and David were Canadian novice and junior champions, and they placed 7th at the junior world championships in 1992. "Following the 1993 Canadian championships, David Pelletier did something rather daring: he had won the Canadian pairs championship both as a novice and as a junior with Julie Laporte but then decided he needed to shake up his career and his skating. He split with Julie, getting together with Allison Gaylor," (Dan Mathison, Canadian Championships, CTV, 1995). Pelletier and Gaylor trained in Boucheville, where they had the opportunity to work with Lloyd Eisler and Isabelle Brasseur (both former world champions and former students of Picard and Gilles). The young pair team arrived on the national scene when they skated a near flawless long program that brought the crowd to their feet at the 1995 Canadian championships. Their outstanding performance earned David and Allison the opportunity to represent Canada at the world championships in Birmingham, England.

Biographies: Jamie Salé Jamie Salé was born on April 21, 1977 in Calgary, Alberta. Jamie grew up in Red Deer, Alberta, and it was there that she discovered the joys of figure skating. Jamie quickly moved through the competitive ranks in Canada - she placed 3rd in novice and 8th in junior ladies at the national championships. In 1994, Jamie won the short program and finished 3rd in the junior event at the Canadian championships. In her early teenage years, Salé was paired with a male skater named Jason Turner. Turner was 7 years older than Salé. Salé traveled from Red Deer to Edmonton for three years to train with Jason at the prestigious Royal Glenora Club before moving to Edmonton. While skating pairs, Jamie continued to compete as a single skater. Salé said, "It is actually quite fun to be in both events because they are quite different," (Cowley 1994). Early success came as a pairs skater when Salé and Turner won the 1992 Canadian junior championship. One year later, Salé and Turner placed 4th in their first year of senior competition at the national championships. In December 1993, Salé and Turner received their first international assignment and traveled to Japan to compete at the NHK Trophy. The Canadians placed 5th in a strong field of international competitors. "'This is the first year they've really had a senior look to them,' pairs coach David Howe said about Salé and Turner. 'We really noticed that at the NHK (Trophy) at Japan last month. They were getting a lot more credit for the same stuff they had been doing,'" (Cowley 1994).

A "Politically Correct" Autobiography I read Lucille Ball's autobiography "Love, Lucy" and was impressed by the wealth of detail. It was so wonderful to get to finally see how Lucille Ball looked at life. And it was also inspiring to see the amount of work that Ball had to put in to attain super-stardom. But, as with many autobiographies, you need to take this work with a grain of salt. Ball obviously wasn't interested in making herself (or anyone else, for that matter,) look bad. She deliberately sidesteps issues regarding husband Desi Arnaz's marital fidelty, and she also downplays her own jealous and controlling nature. So if you want to read a very "politically correct" version of Lucy's life, I suggest you read this autobiography. But if you want to read the hard facts, I suggest you look elsewhere. A stunning self-portrait of the world's most famous clown.
