Photo # 9617717 Issue #8, October 1996 A Letter from Oksana (Oksana wrote to us to describe her experience as a first-timer on the Tom Collins' Tour of Champions.) I am greatly impressed by the level of organization of the tour, starting from the book of itinerary and finishing with the equipment for muscular development, games that the skaters could enjoy during the show when they do not skate. The level of skaters: the best in the world. All skaters try to practice inspite of difficult schedule of travel. During the show you not only watch them skate, but also learn how to perform, present yourself, be successful with the public. The staff on the tour including Tom Collins, is very friendly, supportive and try to do everything possible to help skaters skate well. You are not afraid of the tour managers.

Nicholas LaRoche > Senior Men 2002 US National Junior Men's Champion Nicholas LaRoche, born on July 29, 1983, in Gardner, MA, is the 2002 U.S. National Junior Men's Champion. In a February 2002 interview with Unseen Skaters , he said: "Winning Nationals was definitely an amazing feeling... I have had problems with the long program in the past, but with all my hard work, I proved to everybody, including myself, that I am capable of being the best!" LaRoche began skating at the age of nine after watching Kristi Yamaguchi win the 1992 Olympic Games. His favorite jump is the triple lutz, which he describes as "a very large jump for me, and with the speed I get it's very exciting." LaRoche trains in El Segundo, CA and represents the All Year FSC. He is coached by Nedda Soltani, and his 2002-2003 senior programs are choreographed by Grant Rorvick and Phillip Mills.

    History
    • origins in a.o. Netherlands founding of ISU (IEV) development of the competitions
Speed skating is a Winter Olympic Games medal sport. The sport was revolutionized in the 1990s with the introduction of clap skates , allowing competitors to reach speeds of nearly 40 miles per hour.
    Rules
Speed skating is currently conducted on ovals with artificial ice. The length of the track for the major competitions is 400 m, but tracks of 333 m or 200 m are also in use. All races are held in pairs, for which two lanes on the track are used. At the back straight, the skaters switch lanes which causes them both to cover the same distance per lap.
    Material
    Competition Format
    Single distances
The most basic form of speed skating consists of skating a single event. This is the format used for the World Single Distance Championships and the World Cup. Usual distance include the 500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m, 3000 m (women only), 5000 m and 10000 m (men only), but several other distances are sometimes skated. For championships, the 500 m and the 1000 m are currently conducted in two runs, with the final ranking based on accumulated times.
