A "Politically Correct" Autobiography I read Lucille Ball's autobiography "Love, Lucy" and was impressed by the wealth of detail. It was so wonderful to get to finally see how Lucille Ball looked at life. And it was also inspiring to see the amount of work that Ball had to put in to attain super-stardom. But, as with many autobiographies, you need to take this work with a grain of salt. Ball obviously wasn't interested in making herself (or anyone else, for that matter,) look bad. She deliberately sidesteps issues regarding husband Desi Arnaz's marital fidelty, and she also downplays her own jealous and controlling nature. So if you want to read a very "politically correct" version of Lucy's life, I suggest you read this autobiography. But if you want to read the hard facts, I suggest you look elsewhere. A stunning self-portrait of the world's most famous clown.

Inspiring and beautifully written very good true story Very moving and inspiring. I couldn't put it down. It inspired me to dream and work really hard to reach it. Nancy has amazing parents that support her in everything she did. I really respect them. The way Nancy faced every problem is amazing. You have to read this book. Inspiring biography about an American role-model. "Kristi Yamaguchi: Artist on Ice" by Shiobhan Donahue captivates the mind, as it depicts the wonderful career of one of figure skating's best; Kristi Yamaguchi. It is a wonderful book for high school students as it is well written and portrays Kristi "in a most illustrious light." I personally have never read a more concise, and accurate portrayal of a sports figure, and Shiobhan does an excellent job at doing this. It is the best book on her ever written!!!!

Short Track Team Members Qualify for World Cup Competition Eagan, Minn. (Oct. 18, 1998) - Members of the U.S. Short Track team secured a spot on the World Cup team this weekend at the American Cup I held in Eagan, Minn. from Oct. 17-18, a qualifying meet for the remaining four of the six World Cups this season. Ron Biondo (Broadview Heights, Ohio) and Apolo Ohno (Seattle, Wash.) both joined the team for the men, and Sarah Williams (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) joined the team for the women. It was once again domination by U.S. teammates Amy Peterson (Maplewood, Minn.) and Erin Porter (Saratoga Springs N.Y.) , who both had a bye because of their top finishes in the last two World Cups. The pair swept the women's events to give them a number one and number two overall finish. Peterson finished first in the 1500-meters, 500-meters and 1000-meters and finished second to Porter in the 3000-meters. Porter finished second in all of her events except for her win in the 3000-meters. Ohno, the young inliner who crossed over from inline skating to speedskating in 1993, finished on top of the men despite a disqualification because of a pass in the 1000-meter race. Ohno finished first in the 1500 and the 500 and second in the 3000. Biondo had his best finishes this season, placing second overall to earn his World Cup spot. Biondo finished second in the 1500, 500, and 1000, and seventh in the 3000 meters.

Young Phenomenon Apolo Anton Ohno Breaks American Record in 500m at Final World Cup Apolo Anton Ohno broke the American record in the 500m at the World Cup in Beijing, China. This was a strong weekend for the American men, whose third-place finish in the relay gave them their first relay medal for the season. This was the final World Cup for the short track team. The U.S. women finished third overall in the team standings for this World Cup series. The U.S. has had a stellar season, winning nine individual medals and five relay top-three finishes. Daniel Weinstein is eighth overall in the final World Cup standings, the highest ranking for any U.S. male. Amy Peterson and Erin Porter finished sixth and seventh in the final World Cup standings. 1500m: Five out of the six skaters made the semi-final and two advanced to the final, the best results yet for the team in World Cup competition. It was the pair of Peterson and Porter once again at the top. The two battled for the number three spot in the semi-finals, then with a couple of laps to go Peterson was disqualified for a pass she made on the inside. Porter finished fourth and advanced to the finals, where she finished sixth.

2002 World Speed Skating Championships After their recent world-record setting exploits at the Olympic Winter Games, the world's best speed skaters will come together again at the indoor ice-rink "Thialf" in Heerenveen, the Netherlands on 15-17 March to determine the men's and ladies' all-round ISU World Champion for 2002. This time the focus is not so much on breaking records as on proving who is the strongest in an exhausting series of four races at different distances over three days. They are sure to be cheered on by a large, enthusiastic crowd. In the men's ISU World Championships skaters race over 500m, 1500m, 5000m and 10000m. Events in the ladies' competition are 500m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000m. Points are awarded based on times to decide the overall winner. Prize money of close to $200,000 is available, with $27,500 for the overall champion in both the men's and ladies' events. 24 ladies and 24 men from a total of 13 countries will take part in the event. Ladies' Competition A tough battle is expected between German Olympic Champions Claudia Pechstein (3000m and 5000m) and Anni Friesinger (1500m). Two months ago it was Friesinger who won gold in the all-round ISU European Speed Skating Championships in Erfurt, Germany, and she is also the reigning World Champion from 2001. A possible challenger is Renate Groenewold (NED), who won the Olympic silver medal in the 3000m to go with her bronze at the European Championships.

The 20 Most Promising Skaters of 2003 By TSB Staff Each season, there is a new crop of names that almost seem to appear without warning onto the radar screen that is the international figure skating scene. Each year this group of youngsters are jumping higher and spinning faster. Each year they are also becoming more talented artistically as they gain exposure to the art of figure skating. This year, TSB is starting a new tradition. We are honoring the skaters whom we feel are just on the verge of international success. The criteria for recognition was simpledemonstrated high levels of skating ability with the promise of further growth in the future. As there are many talented up-and-comers in the world of figure skating, we decided to narrow this list to only include those skaters who have yet to medal in a major senior international competition. This eliminated many names which, although we feel that they have much potential for the future, have already demonstrated that they are capable of results. Without further ado, here is our list of the twenty skaters that you should become more familiar with.. we're sure that you'll be seeing their names in headlines and at the top of podiums in the not-so distant future. The list is presented in alphabetical order.

    Skaters and autobiographies
Homophobia affects all male skaters, regardless of their personal sexual orientation. Many assume that all male skaters are gay; even when individual male skaters are known to be straight, they are frequently the target of anti-gay slurs just for being in the sport. When it comes to autobiography or authorized biography, male skaters have taken a number of approaches to this phenomenon. In a few cases, the silence has spoken loudly. Of the male skater autobiographies Rainbow Ice is aware of, only one, Icebreaker: the Autobiography of Rudy Galindo , with Eric Marcus, acknowledges the subject as gay. Another, Toller Cranston's Zero Tollerance , with Martha Lowder Kimball, describes a same-sex rendezvous, although Cranston does not identify as gay or bisexual. Of the other male skater autobiographies, there are a few which employ a curious "don't ask, don't tell" strategy. It cannot be easy to decide to collaborate with a writer on the story of one's life while omitting any mention of a love life whatsoever, but this is the choice made by Brian Orser in his 1988 book A Skater's Life with Steve Milton, and by the 1998 authorized biography
