Emily Blynn and Geoffrey Drayton
Blynn and Drayton On Target for 2003-2004
August 10, 2003
Barry Mittan
Emily Blynn and Geoffrey Drayton hope to make an impact this season at the intermediate level in ice dance. In their first outing at the 25th Annual Cherry Blossom Invitational Competition they won the James Edward Maltby Memorial Trophy for Intermediate Dance. The couple won all three compulsory dances and the free dance, competing against teams that had finished in the top ten at Nationals in 2002-2003. Last week at the 2003 Lake Placid Ice Dance Competition, they won all four of the compulsory dances and finished fifth in the intermediate free dance, with one first place ordinal, skating first of the 20 teams competing. Last season, the dancers finished second in juvenile dance at the U. S. Junior Nationals in Lake Placid, won the South Atlantic Regionals, Challenge Cup and Skate Wilmington, and took gold medals in compulsory dances and free dance at the 2002 Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships. "Like any other competitive skater the ultimate goal is the Olympics," Blynn said. "I'm shooting for 2010 or 2014, but our short term goals are to go to Junior Nationals again this year and skate well there." "My main goal in skating is to just have fun no matter what happens," Drayton added. "I want to compete for as long as I can in order to achieve my goals," Blynn continued. "If I ever become a professional skater, I probably would want to compete professionally. But right now I'm just concentrating on my every day life, and what will happen is going to happen."

Loren Galler-Rabinowitz and David Mitchell
Dancers Excel in Multiple Endeavors
April 1, 2004
Barry Mittan
The unique ice dancing team of Loren Galler-Rabinowitz and David Mitchell continues to make its mark on the U.S. skating scene. Not only are they the country's top native-born ice dancing team, they are also the only team where both partners are award-winning musicians and honor students who attend school full-time. Galler-Rabinowitz is a senior at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols School in Boston and will graduate this spring. After scoring near perfect marks on her college entrance exams and winning the headmaster's prize for academic achievement, she was accepted at Harvard and Yale. She plans to go to medical school and specialize in either fetal cardiology or pediatric orthopedics. "Lately I've become more interested in my mother's work in malnutrition and brain development," she added. Mitchell will graduate this spring from Tufts University with a bachelor's degree in political science with a minor in economics. "It was pretty challenging taking a full class load over the last four years," Mitchell stated, "but I'm glad I did it. I didn't want to be a perennial student. My class selections depended on the time the courses were given and the flexibility of the professors. With rare exceptions, they were very flexible. They either gave me assignments before I left or allowed me to make up work on my return."

Steve Love's New York Express Roller Dance Company was founded in 1985 as a natural outgrowth of the contemporary dance and roller skating explosion. Since its inception, Mr. Love has led three generations of companies and hundreds of skaters to theatres and arenas throughout the world. His work demonstrates a new approach to modern classical movement with an extraordinarily unique medium...Wheels. Within this distinctly American art form, the company combines the athleticism of precision dance and acrobatics with mime and theatre. Their personal choreographic style incorporates both the rigor and discipline of traditional training and the exuberance and edge of street style jazz. Members of Steve Love's New York Express Roller Dance Company come from diverse backgrounds. ranging from competitive skating champions to Hip-Hop masters and acrobatic dancers.

by April Exclusive to Unseen Skaters . July 25, 2003. Carly Donowick, 14, and Leo Ungar, 17, have been competing together since 2002. They train in San Jose, Calif. with Sergei Ponomarenko and Marina Klimova and skate for the Peninsula SC. The finished 4th at US Nationals in Junior Dance this past year. How and when did you begin skating?
Carly Donowick (CD):
I began playing hockey with my older sister and my younger brother when I was 6 years old. My parents switched me into figure skating due to sibling rivalry with my older sister, Emily. I still played ice hockey for my middle school until I was 12 and I'm proud to admit that I led the team in penalty minutes. Leo Ungar (LU): I started taking group lessons when I was in kindergarten, mostly because many of my friends from school were also in the class. I continued in group lessons and enjoyed them very much. When my friends all signed up for hockey, I tried to do the same but unfortunately the class was full. Instead, I called and arranged private lessons with a coach, Peggy Tamres, and that was my introduction to figure skating. To this day, I find it amusing that my career in figure skating (if you can call it that) would never have existed if that hockey class had had one extra spot. What are your long-term goals on and off the ice?

The goal of his expedition was to cross the Antarctic overland, but more than a year later, and still half a continent away from the intended base, the Endurance was trapped in ice and eventually was crushed. For five months Shackleton and his crew survived on drifting ice packs in one of the most savage regions of the world before they were finally able to set sail again in one of the ship's lifeboats. Alfred Lansing's Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage is a white-knuckle account of this astounding odyssey. Oztrack Ice Skating Bookshop
