Sarah Elizabeth Hughes
Born : May 2, 1985 in Great Neck, New York, United States
Nationality : American
Occupation : figure skater American figure skater Sarah Hughes is among the most consistent competitors in the sport, but no one expected her show at the 2003 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. Hughes, just sixteen years old, upset both the favorite, Michelle Kwan, and other strong contenders to take the gold medal in women's figure skating. Hughes was born May 5, 1985 in Great Neck, New York. She is the fourth of six children of John, a lawyer and former hockey player, and Amy Hughes, an accountant. She began skating at age three in the backyard rink, following the lead of her two older brothers and sister. Her parents bought her hockey skates, but Hughes was incredibly competitive from an early age, and wanted to skate by herself. When she started taking classes, it was obvious that she had natural ability; she quickly mastered moves that challenged other skaters her age. She was a jumping whiz and began training with a coach, Patti Johnson, at age four. By the time she was five, Hughes knew she wanted to skate for the rest of her life. As word traveled about the precocious young skater, Hughes was invited to skate in ice shows and exhibitions, performing in front of thousands of people. She loved being the center of attention, and thrived on the crowds. At age six she was part of a show that included Kristi Yamaguchi, whom she had just watched win the gold medal at the 1992 Olympic Games. She appeared on a Christmas special with Kathie Lee Gifford, and did a European tour with famous Russian coach Natalia Dubova and the world ice dance champions. She was friends with figure skating legends Scott Hamilton, JoJo Starbuck, and Peggy Fleming by the time she was eight years old. When Hughes was nine, choreographer Robin Wagner joined her team to help prepare her for competitions. Wagner would later become her coach. She entered her first major competition in 1996 at age ten, the North Atlantic Regional, and came in third place in the novice division. In 1997, she placed first.

The 20 Most Promising Skaters of 2003 By TSB Staff Each season, there is a new crop of names that almost seem to appear without warning onto the radar screen that is the international figure skating scene. Each year this group of youngsters are jumping higher and spinning faster. Each year they are also becoming more talented artistically as they gain exposure to the art of figure skating. This year, TSB is starting a new tradition. We are honoring the skaters whom we feel are just on the verge of international success. The criteria for recognition was simpledemonstrated high levels of skating ability with the promise of further growth in the future. As there are many talented up-and-comers in the world of figure skating, we decided to narrow this list to only include those skaters who have yet to medal in a major senior international competition. This eliminated many names which, although we feel that they have much potential for the future, have already demonstrated that they are capable of results. Without further ado, here is our list of the twenty skaters that you should become more familiar with.. we're sure that you'll be seeing their names in headlines and at the top of podiums in the not-so distant future. The list is presented in alphabetical order.

Title: Author: Contact: April's Dance Bernie
Schallehn (Biography/Sports April's Dance America is in love with figure skating! Network TV can't program enough to satisfy a hungry public. Business week recently ranked figure skating as the second highest rated spectator sport. Live shows and competitions continue to break all previous attendance records. And with this popularity comes another desire. The American viewer wants to know- just who are these kings and queens of the ice? Biographies have been written and movies have been produced about some of these athletes. There is one young skater, however, beautiful and courageous individual, both on and off the ice, whose story remains untold... I own the exclusive story rights for premier American ice dancer, April Sargent, and have completed a screenplay capturing the true story of her journey to the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France. April's Dance is the incredible tale of a young girl's solitary goal, a single-minded dream of one day being chosen to represent the United States in Olympic Competition. In every sense of the word, we are witness to a classic heroine's journey. Leaving home and relocating to an international training center at the tender age of 14, April soon encounters the fierce competitiveness of the multitude of other Olympic hopefuls. In a new environment, with little adult supervision, she is exposed to the habits and behaviors of the older skaters. Firsthand, she observes the darker sides of this beautiful sport.

Inspiring biography about an American role-model. "Kristi Yamaguchi: Artist on Ice" by Shiobhan Donahue captivates the mind, as it depicts the wonderful career of one of figure skating's best; Kristi Yamaguchi. It is a wonderful book for high school students as it is well written and portrays Kristi "in a most illustrious light." I personally have never read a more concise, and accurate portrayal of a sports figure, and Shiobhan does an excellent job at doing this. It is the best book on her ever written!!!!

Skating. Grades 5 and up / Ages 10 and up. Review by Lorraine Douglas. excerpt: These are times for greatness. They are trying times, too, for figure skating is dealing with new scoring systems, new structures and new challenges. But in the midst of turmoil, great skating still shines. And the list of talented skaters sparkles with new names. In each section. the biggest stars, like Evgeny Plushenko, Sasha Cohen, Shen and Zhao, and Bourne and Kraatz, are given several pages for their biographies. Their write ups include personal quotes as well as describing how they started skating and overcame challenges to achieve their dreams. Steve Milton, a sports writer, has a highly readable and energetic style. Sidebars provide vital information like birth dates, coaches, choreographers, etc., and some special tidbits of information are bulleted. There is a complete listing of the stars' standings in recent competitions. There are over 25 individual skaters featured as well as ten pairs teams and 13 ice dance couples. The shorter biographies are often one page in length accompanied with a striking photograph. These artists include the Canadian Jeff Buttle who was runner-up to Plushenko at Skate Canada 2003, a number of talented Chinese skaters like Chengjiang Li, and dancers Grushina and Goncharov.

Review by Irene Gordon.
Not only will Super Skaters be of great interest to avid figure skating fans, but it will also be very useful for school research projects. The book is introduced by a history of figure skating, from the first use of animal bones as skate blades some 4000 years ago, to the use of metal blades in Holland in the 14th Century, to the founding of the first skating club in the world in Scotland around 1650, to the present. As well, there is a description of how skaters prepare their programs, illustrated explanations of how the various jumps are done, a listing of the Olympic gold medalists in the four skating disciplines (men's, women's, pairs and ice dance), and an explanation of how competitions are judged. "As more and more people in Europe and North America discovered the pleasures of skating, they began to skate together on ponds and lakes. The first skating club in the world, the Edinburgh Skating Club in chilly Scotland, came into being around 1650. To join the club, you had to be able to skate in a circle on one foot, then on the other foot, then jump over a pile of three hats. Perhaps these tricky exercises could be considered the first skating competition. "(Page 3)
