The Six Day War: Part Six
John Horvath The prospect for peace in the Middle East is as dim now as it ever was As another American president attempts to make peace in the Middle East before an election year with the vain hope of securing a victory for himself and/or party, not to mention establish a personal legacy, the latest "road map" seems to have already gotten off course. Unless peace is established by force, this latest attempt will most likely end in failure. Recent events, such as the failed assassination attempt and rocket attack in Gaza followed the next day by a suicide bombing in the heart of Jerusalem simply reaffirm this.
E ven if the US approaches the problem as a true, honest broker, there is one element in the whole process that will perpetually render Mid East peace as nothing more than an elusive dream: after more than three decades, the Six Day War still isn't over. And it doesn't look as though it will end anytime soon, at least not until Israel succeeds in getting everything it wanted out of the conflict, either by hook or by crook or even genocide. Contrary to being a brief moment in history, the Six Day War has been a long and evolutionary process. Presently, we are witnessing what can be said to be the sixth stage of the conflict. In order to fully understand the importance of this, we need to revisit its very origins.

Six Days of War By SHELDON KIRSHNER

For supposedly just another history book, Six Days of War, published by Oxford University Press in June to coincide with the 35th anniversary of the Six Day War, has done extraordinarily well.
So well, in fact, that its author, Michael Oren, is flabbergasted.
"We thought 20,000 copies would be bought," he said in a telephone interview from his home in southern Jerusalem.
Instead, the sales figures have been phenomenal - 80,000 sold and a further 20,000 to be printed in a new edition.
Oren, whose book has been widely praised by critics as the finest treatment of the subject and has been on the New York Times' best-selling list for the past few weeks, believes two factors account for its popularity.
"There is great interest in the Middle East after 9/11 and due to the current violence in Israel," he said.
He was referring to the Sept. 11 Arab terrorist acts that resulted in the destruction of the World Trade Center in Manhattan and in the partial destruction of the Pentagon, and to the second Palestinian uprising that has spilled into Israel with horrific consequences.
Oren, an American who has lived in Israel for the past 25 years, acknowledged there is no shortage of books, some quite good, about the 1967 Six Day War.

The author has researched U.S., Soviet, U.N., Israeli, and Arab archives and documents to show the superpower background of this incredible war. Other books on this war are excellent summaries, but this one specializes in the political context, both within Israel, among the Arab nations, and the international scene. While the many footnotes and nuanced views may be laborious for the general readerthus the four of five star ratingthose who want to know the full story of one of the swiftest military victories in all of history must read Mr. Oren's account. Especially interesting is the section on the Israeli's mistaken attack on the U.S. reconnaisance ship the Liberty, still a source of contention at times, yet shown decisively here to have been a tragic and unintentional mistake by the Israelis.

The book discusses the Six Day War between Israel and Palestine, which has been said to have caused the Yom Kippur War, the war in Lebanon, the Camp David Accords, the controversy over Jerusalem and Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the intifada and the rise of Palestinian terror. Mr. Oren's book is a comprehensive history of the war, and is the first to study it as both a military struggle and as a turning point in the Cold War. It examines the relationships between Moshe Dayan, Gamal Abdul Nasser, Hafez al-Assad, Yitzhak Rabin, Lyndon Johnson and Alexi Kosygin.

    Books: Daughter to the Devil
Louise Potterton, Vienna It’s been a long, hard road to the truth for Monika Goeth, whose father was the concentration-camp commandant made infamous in ‘Schindler’s List’ for shooting inmates randomly from his balcony As a child, when she didn’t know what he had done, Monika Goeth loved her father very much. But today, the daughter of Amon Goeth, the commander of the Plaszow Camp in Poland where the so-called "Schindler Jews" were interned, says she’s not so sure. Now 56, Monika, who no longer goes by the name "Goeth," tells her disturbing but fascinating story with total frankness in the German-language book, "I Have to Love My Father, or Do I?" an extended conversation with German author Matthias Kessler. She recalls how her mother hid the truth about her father, describing him only as "handsome, charming and well-educated." And she describes her reaction to the chilling portrayal of her father by Ralph Fiennes in Steven Spielberg’s "Schindler’s List," which made her sick for three days. Among his other sadistic pastimes, Goeth would shoot Jews in the camp from his balcony.

This web site is dedicated to the memory of thirty-four fine young men who gave their lives on June 8, 1967, defending the USS Liberty against a sustained air and sea attack by the armed forces of the State of Israel During the Six Day War between Israel and the Arab States, the American intelligence ship USS Liberty was attacked for 75 minutes in international waters by Israeli aircraft and motor torpedo boats. Thirty-four men died and 172 were wounded. The attack has been a matter of controversy ever since. Survivors and many key government officials including Secretary of State Dean Rusk and former JCS Chairman Admiral Thomas Moorer say it was no accident. Israel and its supporters insist it was a "tragic case of misidentification" and charge that the survivors are either lying or too emotionally involved to see the truth. Israel claims they mistook our ship for the out-of-service Egyptian horse carrier El Quseir and that we brought the attack upon ourselves by operating in a war zone without displaying a flag. Not so. We were in international waters, far from any fighting, and flew a bright, clean, new American flag.

What was the course of the Six Day War?
Eminent American historian Barbara Tuchman opened her essay on Israel’s stunning victory in the Six Day War of June 1967 this way:
    • A people considered for centuries as non-fighters carried out in June, 1967 against long odds the most nearly perfect military operation in modern history.
After a long period of provocation, hostile actions, and threats from its Arab neighboring countries, Israel was forced to act in self-defense . Faced with few choices, on June 4, 1967 the Cabinet authorized the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defence to decide on appropriate steps to defend the State of Israel. On June 5, Israel launched a pre-emptive strike against Egypt and captured the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip. Despite an Israeli appeal to Jordan to stay out of the conflict, Jordan attacked Israel and thereby lost control of the West Bank and the eastern sector of Jerusalem. Israel went on to capture the Golan Heights from Syria by the time the war ended on June 10. The Six-Day War started with a far-reaching air attack, code named "Moked", to shatter the Arab air forces while their aircraft were still on the ground. A massive, simultaneous attack by Israeli first-line aircraft was launched on the morning of June 5 against all Egyptian air force bases in Sinai and Egypt, the main Arab air force. Approximately 300 Egyptian aircraft, including bombers, combat planes and helicopters, were destroyed in less than 2 hours, eliminating the main air threat against Israel. When it became clear that Jordan had entered the war, the Israel Air Force turned to the Jordanian airfields in Amman and Mafrak and destroyed a large part of the Jordanian Air Force. Later on the same day, the air forces of Syria and Iraq were also eliminated as a threat.

In May 1967 Arab armies began assembling long the frontiers with Israel. At the same time General Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt ordered a blockade of the Gulf of Aqaba. General Moshe Dayan , Israel's Minister of Defence, decided on a pre-emptive strike. On 5th June, 1967, the Israeli airforce bombed the airfields in Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Jordan. Egyptian tanks were also destroyed in Sinai and the Israeli army reached the Suez Canal and the west bank of the Jordan river on 7th June. Over the next three days the Israelis captured the Golan Heights and territory in Syria. The Six-Day War reopened the Gulf of Aqaba. It also gave them control over the West Bank of Jordan and the 600,000 Arabs living in that area.

Mid-East Realities, 11 June 1997 MER - Most of the lies and distortions about the Six Day War in 1967 when Israel occupied the Golan, West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem, remain today 30 years later. The reality is that Israel encouraged and then took advantage of that war for many political, economic, and territorial reasons. In the following column by Prof. Tanya Reinhart, she puts this into perspective in so far as Israel's attack on Syria and capture of the Golan in the last days of the war. What history still does not properly record are:
    • Israel never was in military danger, the Israeli Army was always aware they could overpowered all the Arab armies. The US CIA was greatly involved in providing Israel intelligence information that greatly helped them win the war in such a short time. US military personnel, disguised as civilians and on secret missions to which they were sworn to secrecy, helped the Israelis with specific technical and intelligence-gathering operations.
There is also a considerable likelihood that in the years following the war the American CIA, cooperating with the Israeli Mossad, targeted Gamal Abdel Nasser, President of Egypt, just as was the case with other
