What is sinusitis?
You're coughing and sneezing and tired and achy. You think that you might be getting a cold. Later, when the medicines you've been taking to relieve the symptoms of the common cold are not working and you've now got a terrible headache, you finally drag yourself to the doctor. After listening to your history of symptoms, examining your face and forehead, and perhaps doing a sinus X-ray, the doctor says you have sinusitis.
Sinusitis simply means your sinuses are infected or inflamed, but this gives little indication of the misery and pain this condition can cause. Health care experts usually divide sinusitis cases into
  • Acute, which lasts for 3 weeks or less
  • Chronic, which usually lasts for 3 to 8 weeks but can continue for months or even years
  • Recurrent, which is several acute attacks within a year
Health care experts estimate that 37 million Americans are affected by sinusitis every year. Health care workers report 33 million cases of chronic sinusitis to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention annually. Americans spend millions of dollars each year for medications that promise relief from their sinus symptoms.

Sinusitis
Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
December, 2002 Download this factsheet Sinusitis is an infection or inflammation of the membranes that line the nasal passages and sinuses, the air-filled spaces in the front of the skull.
Sinusitis
Most colds – infection with one of the common cold viruses – cause a stuffy or "bunged up" nose, which clears up within a few days. But if the sinuses become inflamed, other symptoms such as headache and painful swelling of the face may develop. Sinusitis may only last a few days (acute sinusitis), or it may be an ongoing problem that, without treatment, never completely goes away (chronic sinusitis). Acute sinusitis is common in the UK, affecting approximately 3 in 1000 people. Chronic sinusitis is less common and affects about 1 in 1000 people. Babies under one don’t get sinusitis because their sinuses are not fully developed, but it can otherwise affect people of any age.

What are the signs of acute sinusitis?
A cold that starts to get better and then gets worse may be a sign of acute sinusitis. Pain or pressure in some areas of the face (forehead, cheeks or between the eyes) is often a sign of blocked sinus drainage and can be a sign of acute sinusitis. Pain in your forehead that starts when you lean forward can also be a sign. Other symptoms may include a stuffy nose, fever, thick green or yellow nasal mucus, and an ache in your upper teeth. Sinusitis: (Symptoms / Causes / Treatments)
Sinusitis Overview
Sinuses are air pockets that are located in your face - the cheek area under your eyes, between your eyes, just behind your nose, and in your forehead. The sinuses are attached to the nasal passages via small tubes, which allow drainage to take place. When these small tubes become blocked, sinus problems begin. Sinusitis occurs when bacteria infects the sinus cavities, usually due to blockage of the small tubes attached to your nasal passages. This causes an inflammation of your sinuses, which stops proper drainage.

Reflux Disease May Cause Sinusitis and Damage Teeth
A review of studies by Medical College of Wisconsin physicians suggests that gastric acid refluxed up the esophagus may damage structures other than the esophagus and result in various health conditions including sinus infections and eroded teeth and gums. Reza Shaker, MD Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology (Vol.30s, pp.535-538). There is clear evidence in both healthy as well as GERD patient populations that refluxed gastric acid may come in contact with structures as high as the pharynx. The pharynx is the cavity leading from the mouth and nasal passages ultimately to the esophagus. In GERD patients, the frequency and the contact time of the acid with mucous membranes in the pharynx is much greater. A history of regurgitation in which stomach contents are refluxed into the mouth particularly at night, associated with cough, is a significant clue to the possibility of GERD complications that reach beyond the esophagus. A history of repetitive throat clearing, recurring hoarseness (particularly in the morning), and bad breath may be symptoms of acid reflux-related conditions extending beyond the esophagus. In one study, only 43% of patients suspected of ear/nose/throat complications from GERD had classic symptoms of heartburn, regurgitation, or difficulty swallowing.

Sinuses Sinusitis Alternative names Return to top Acute sinusitis; Sinus infection; Sinusitis - acute Definition Return to top Sinusitis refers to inflammation of the sinuses. This is generally caused by a viral, bacterial, or fungal infection. The sinuses are air-filled spaces around the forehead, cheeks, and eyes that are lined with mucous membranes. Healthy sinuses are sterile (meaning that they contain no bacteria or other organisms) and open, allowing mucus to drain and air to circulate. When inflamed, the sinuses become blocked with mucus and can become infected. Each year, over 30 million adults and children get sinusitis. Sinusitis can be acute (lasting anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks) or chronic, with symptoms lingering much longer. See also chronic sinusitis Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Signs and Symptoms:
The sinuses are air spaces found in the facial bones that surround the nose, including areas within the cheek bones and in the bones of the forehead above the eyes. When these sinus spaces become inflamed or infected, the infection is called sinusitis. Sinusitis can be either acute (symptoms present for less than 1 month), subacute (symptoms for 1 to 4 months), or chronic (symptoms for more than 4 months). Acute sinusitis may cause different symptoms in different age groups. In adults and older children, for example, symptoms include: a stuffy nose; a discharge from the nose that is yellow, green, bad-smelling or tinged with blood; redness inside the nose; swelling or dull pain around the eyes; tenderness in the area of the cheeks or around the eyes; cheek pain that may be mistaken for a toothache; a feeling of "pressure" in the head; a morning headache; a headache that gets worse when the child bends forward; and bad breath. Sometimes there may also be a dry cough or a low-grade fever, and the child may have trouble sleeping. Stomach upset with vomiting of mucus may be present. Younger children may have any of the symptoms listed above, but sometimes their complaints are less specific. They may appear to have a "

If you've been waking up with headaches, feeling stuffy or congested, and experiencing swelling around your eyes, you may not be suffering from allergies . You may have sinusitis, an infection of the sinus air spaces found in the bones around your nose. Sinus infections can be inconvenient or even painful at times, but they're usually not severe, and with proper diagnosis and treatment, your sniffling and throat clearing will soon be a thing of the past. What Is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is the medical term for inflammation of the sinuses, which is usually caused by infection. The sinuses are the moist air spaces within the bones of the face around the nose. The frontal sinuses are located in the area near the eyebrows; the maxillary sinuses are located inside the cheekbones; the ethmoid sinuses are between the eyes; and the sphenoid sinuses sit behind the ethmoid sinuses. When you are healthy, the sinuses are filled with air, making your facial bones less dense and much lighter in weight. If you didn't have sinuses, the bony weight of your skull would be increased so much that you'd probably have to prop it up with your hands all day! Sinuses also give resonance to your voice. Viruses or bacteria - or a combination of both - can cause sinusitis. Generally when a person has a

Will man lästigen Schnupfen loswerden ?
