Adapted From: Single Parenting For Dummies Each of your children is a one-of-a-kind person. Don't make the mistake of lumping them into a one-size-fits-all relationship. You need to handle each child's idiosyncrasies a little differently. Your youngest daughter may burst into tears when you casually reprimand her for not cleaning her room, but your older daughter may respond in good humor with, "Hey, Dad, chill out. I'll have my room ready for inspection in 30 minutes, and you'll be sooo proud of me!" The sooner you catch on to the differences in your children's personalities, the better your relationships will be, especially as you learn the importance of really listening to your children and practicing positive talk. Listening to your child is one of the greatest ways you can demonstrate your love. When I wrote Where’s Daddy ? together with my daughter, we used ‘Daddy’ in the title because nine out of ten single parents are mothers. We did, however, acknowledge that the book could have been called Where’s Mummy? and we gave single fathers a strong voice in our book. It is hard enough to be a parent when part of a couple, but the single parent has to face many difficulties alone. There are decisions to be made daily about bringing up children, and at the same time many a lone parent has to struggle with a tight budget. Although some women may choose to be single parents, the majority find that it is thrust upon them, either because of the breakdown of a relationship, or the death of a partner. It is not easy to keep in mind when we see the statistics showing the number of divorces which take place each year, that there is often a reluctant partner in a number of divorces. If a partner leaves suddenly - and this includes death as the cause of the breakup of a family - the parent left with the children has to struggle to manage grief, anger and loss while at the same time remaining a strong parent for the children. The children will, of course, have their own feelings to deal with, and it seems cruel and unfair that when a bereaved parent is at his or her lowest ebb, the children need to be reassured that all is as well as can be, and that they are safe and loved. It is hard to answer questions that the children ask, especially if you are not sure what the answers should be. ‘Why did Mummy leave?’ ‘Doesn’t Daddy love us anymore?’ and even ‘Why did you send Dad away?’ These questions can leave even the most loving parent searching for answers to give their child.

http://www.wcg.org/lit/booklets/families/single.htm
The Single-Parenting Challenge There were no chairs, so we sat on the floor. Elaine (not her real name) shared the three-room, basement apartment with her five children. The only furniture was a bed and a coffee table, on which were a few cheap ornaments and a greeting card. It was a Mother's Day card, and inside, in a child's handwriting, was the simple message: "To our best friend." Nothing I could write conveys what I want to say so eloquently as that card. UPHILL BATTLE To be a single parent can be a difficult and often lonely job. You must be parent and friend, judge and jury, counselor and teacher. And you must do it without the encouragement, support and inspiration that come from sharing the responsibility of parenting with a loving mate. "I worry sometimes that I'm not a good mother," Elaine confided to me. "You're a wonderful mother," I quickly reassured her. "Five little people here seem to think you're the best." A mother's love is love that comes about as close as we imperfect human beings can get to godly love. But it isn't easy to be someone's best friend when you yourself are struggling to survive. Elaine works hard to support her family. She often works double shifts as well as taking night classes to improve her skills. Even so, there is never enough money for the necessities, let alone luxuries.

On Mother's Day, a hopeful finding for single mothers and their children from a Cornell researcher
FOR RELEASE May 6, 2004 Contact: Susan S. Lang
Office: 607-255-3613
E-Mail: SSL4@cornell.edu ITHACA, N.Y. Mothers can be a positive influence in their children's lives, whether or not they are single parents. A new multiethnic study at Cornell University has found that being a single parent does not appear to have a negative effect on the behavior or educational performance of a mother's 12- and 13-year-old children. What mattered most in this study, Cornell researcher Henry Ricciuti says, is a mother's education and ability level and, to a lesser extent, family income and quality of the home environment. He found consistent links between these maternal attributes and a child's school performance and behavior, whether the family was white, black or Hispanic. "Over all, we find little or no evidence of systematic negative effects of single parenthood on children, regardless of how long they have lived with a single parent during the previous six years," says Ricciuti, who is professor emeritus of human development in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell. "The findings suggest that in the presence of favorable maternal characteristics, such as education and positive child expectations, along with social resources supportive of parenting, single parenthood in and of itself need not to be a risk factor for a child's performance in mathematics, reading or vocabulary or for behavior problems," Ricciuti says.

Social exclusion trends show success
A report published today shows that the government has halted and begun to reverse some trends in social exclusion and sets out plans to continue the progress. Children and families have benefited the most from a reversal in the steady rise in poverty. The report from the Social Exclusion Unit shows that: The number of children living in relative low-income households has fallen by half a million since 1997; The number of people sleeping rough fell by 70 per cent since 1998; and 200,000 lone parents have moved into work since 1997. Yvette Cooper, Minister in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, said: "The last few decades of the 20th century saw child poverty, unemployment and social exclusion reach breaking point. By tackling the economic causes of social exclusion this government has halted and stared to reverse deep-rooted and powerful trends." She said that while good progress has been made, there is still a long way to go. Only 53 per cent of single parents are in work, for example, 18 per cent of pensioners and 16 per cent of children are living in persistent poverty and Bangladeshi and Pakistani households are three times more likely to be on a low income. The report sets out likely trends in the UK - such as an ageing population, greater ethnic diversity and a growing proportion of single person households. The Minister said the government must design policy with these trends in mind to prevent new types of social exclusion.

Single-Parent Households and Children's Education
SINGLE-PARENTS DON'T DECREASE A CHILD'S READINESS FOR SCHOOL
Living in a single-parent household does not necessarily compromise how well prepared children are for school, concludes a Cornell University Study of about 1,700 6- and 7-year-olds from white, black, and Hispanic families. "Although one-parent families had lower incomes, what mattered most for kids' school readiness was the mothers' ability and educational levels, and these were about the same in both of the large samples we analyzed of single- and two-parent families," said Henry Ricciuti, professor emeritus of human development at Cornell. He stressed that the potential adverse effects of growing up in a single-parent home might not emerge until later in childhood. He also said that many children in single-parent homes might have the advantage of smaller family size and the increased likelihood of the presences of a maternal grandparent, aunt, or uncle in the household. The findings of this study, as well as others, suggest that such support for single-parent families should begin in the early childhood years, when the potential adverse effects of single parenthood have not yet emerged or become apparent. Most of the previous studies have focused on adolescents or high school students and have tended to report adverse effects, typically attributed to differences in family income. The study by Ricciuti is one of the few that focuses on younger children.
