I think it's safe to say that the world of single parenting can be very challenging and it can be very rewarding! I've been a single parent for almost three years now, and although the father of my children is involved in their lives, my children live with me, and I'm the one that deals with the day to day responsibility of raising my children.. There were the days that I just didn't think I'd be able to cope, but those days are fewer and the kids and I slowly built a life that consists of us being a team. Without a father around, single mothers have to give twice the hugs, twice the affection, and twice the attention, with half the time, half the energy and often, half the resources. Just about everyone knows a single mom. The U.S. Census Bureau says almost a third of all U.S. children are being raised in a single-parent home headed by a woman. But do we ever look beyond the statistics and think about what it really takes to parent without a partner? Some of the highest hurdles single moms face are financial, the day-to-day challenges of meeting basic needs. Only half the mothers due child support get the full amount; 25 percent get nothing at all. Therefore it’s not surprising that almost 50 percent of single moms and their children live in poverty, compared to eight percent of families with a married mom and dad. And whatever your opinion of single motherhood, most women who are single parents probably didn’t set out with that as a goal.

Being the youngest child in my family, I didn't have much exposure to younger kids, but that didn't stop the desire. I even had my daughter's name already picked out. I've been blessed to have both this daughter and a son. They are both healthy and happy and are wonderful people. While my daughter is an adult now and off at college, my son still has a way to go. Mother love is fierce. While marital love is conditional, and in my case, faded away to nothing, mother love is forever. It is simply my essence. Yes, I have had a full rewarding life, but my kids have always come first. When one of them is hurt, sick, picked on, or otherwise slighted by life, I switch into what they both laughingly call "Mamabear Mode". Mamabear has taken on quite a few battles over the years, and I'm proud to say, we've all survived beautifully. That is, until now. In an effort to become slimmer and healthier, I asked my doctor to help me lose weight. The rest of the story is known to many of us PHers. Now Mamabear might not be around to help them with their battles and celebrate their successes. Mamabear has Pulmonary Hypertension.
