Successful single parenting Gary Richmond Are you trying to juggle being a loving, nurturing parent while struggling with finances, work, children s activities
http://www.troubledwith.com/Web/groups/public/@fotf_troubledwith/documents/artic
Days overflow with responsibility: making ends meet, chauffeuring kids from one activity to the next, maintaining the house. But even in the midst of endless activity, the monotony of life sets in and many single parents question their effectiveness. Feelings of inadequacy and loneliness often surface: Will my child be balanced? Why do I have to be alone? How can I handle everything I have to do? Will my child resent growing up without both parents? These concerns and fears can be paralyzing, preventing moms and dads from being the parent their kids need. Insecurity, loneliness, grief and rejection loom over many single parents. But there is hope and encouragement for those who face parenting alone. On Your Own

Single parenting survival tips
Successful and positive single parenting tips for raising happy and healthy children, while keeping your sanity intact.
Single parenting is certainly an undertaking requiring finesse and strategy. And some days, survival is the best to hope for. Keeping up with the details of daily living is hard to do, when you're darting here and there, trying not to lose out on any part of your child's life. It becomes harder, still, when we miss out on once in a lifetime events, when we know there should be some way we could juggle everything a bit more efficiently. There is no single formula for successful parenting, but there are ways to help ease the load of single parenting and make a few rough days more bearable. bodyOffer(18423) (1) Find time saving ways of accomplishing everyday tasks. Cook larger portions than needed, especially on weekends when you might have a little extra time, and freeze extra portions in individual meal packages. Then, during the busy and hectic weekdays, take packages out, and heat and serve your ready-made meals. Run errands all at one time, instead of coming and going from home to different places around town, expending your gasoline and your energies. Also, let the kids help at home. It's good for them, and better for all of you. (2) Have a life outside of parenting and your children. Join a club, have regular workouts at a local gym, take yourself out to eat or out for a day of fun with your friends. Allow yourself time at home to be alone, like enjoying a long soak in the tub, free from phones and other demands. This might mean enjoying the tub when the kids are at school, or, you might even hire a babysitter for a couple of hours. Whatever it takes, find unique ways to keep your kids occupied that also give you a chance to recharge your own batteries.

Single Parent Support Groups and Information on the Web
by Barbara Walton
The United States is home to approximately fifteen and a half million single parents, according to the Single Parents Association, and they are on the lookout both for information to improve their lives and for someone who understands their situation: dealing with children, bills, child support, custody hassles, and friends' reactions to their new single status. A multitude of sites on the Internet provide general information from organizations and "been-there, done-that" support from other single parents.

This group is generally acknowledged to be the granddaddy of support groups, mainly catering to divorced men and women when it first began in the late 1950s. Theirs is an attractive, simple site, set up for both browsers that read tables and those that don't, and providing PWP members with a restricted chat group. However, there is a resource center open to all, as well as a directory of local chapters and a search device to help anyone find a chapter nearby. A listing of local and international PWP events helps make it easy for people to find out how they can get involved.

Adapted From: Single Parenting For Dummies When you divorced your husband, did you divorce his family, too? If your wife passed away, do you maintain a relationship with her family? Or are you willing to accept their gifts of love, support, and financial help because of their relationship to your kids?
Maintaining contact creates stability
Grandparents and other family members can be intuitive when it comes to realizing that the kids need their emotional support and the sense of belonging that support can bring. However, grandparents and other relatives may not always be on the same page in the case of divorce. For starters, they may not believe in divorce. Secondly, they're your ex's family and their loyalty is probably with him (or her). The best advice is to withhold your judgment and give them time to get used to the idea. Just because they aren't ready to get involved in your kids' lives now, it doesn't mean that they won't come around eventually. Include them in every holiday or significant event in your child's life, including birthdays, award ceremonies, and sporting events. Ask your child to do the inviting by writing a note, placing a phone call, or asking relatives in person. How can they resist? Many single parents wrap the ex's family into one closefisted wad and drop-kick the whole bundle of them out the door. You're angry with them at the moment, but that's no reason to deprive your children of their love and support. Honestly, you don't have the right to cut them out. After all, this isn't about

Single Parenting in the Summer
(provided by Lois V. Nightingale, Ph.D.)
During the school year it can be difficult enough for single parents to keep kids cared for and out of trouble, but when summer arrives and school activities are no longer available, the challenge becomes even more complicated. Many single parents are left with the dilemma of being happy about extra time with their children but also the concern about what to do with them while they are at work. The following are some practical tips to assist single parents during those long three months:
1. Let kids help in finding solutions. Give your child the opportunity to contribute when plans are being made for the out-of-school months. Model and let them participate in problem solving skills. Write down all possible solutions (theirs too) and write the pros and cons of each. Children cope better with complicated scheduling if they feel they have had some input. Let them help in writing out a schedule.
2. Make sure young children have fun, interesting people to spend time with. Grandparents or an aunt or uncle who really love kids can be a treat for your child; a parent of one of their friends can provide peer interaction as well as adult supervision. Summer school teachers or camp counselors can also contribute positive interactions to your children.

Single Parenting through the Holidays
(provided by Dr. Lois V. Nightingale)
Holidays after a divorce can be very difficult. Holidays with children after a divorce can be worse, even terrifying. Whether this is "your year" with the children or not, facing the holidays and knowing that they will be different from previous years can be challenging. The following are some suggestions to help single parents make the most of the holiday season and help create lasting memories for their children and themselves.
1. Let go of comparisons with the past. Remember that in one way or another "these are the good old days" that you will look back on in years to come. We cannot recreate the past, and to dwell on it only makes us miss out on what we might enjoy now.
2. Be open to creating new traditions. Celebrate an aspect of the winter holiday season that you have never done before, such as Winter Solstice, Kwanza, or the first day of Winter vacation. Start a "family tradition" with a special dessert recipe, hand made decorations, a favorite holiday story, a musical or theatrical event, or act of charity,
3. Don't take yourself or the holiday season too seriously. Laugh a lot. Spend time in fantasy. Christmas and Chanukah are filled with stories and rich fantasy for children. Join in! Put up some whimsical decoration that creates a sense of lightness (mistletoe, candles, lights, and mythical characters).

An Interview with Ross Levin
From Single Parenting a Teen
Chris: Dan is a single parent and he doesn’t have a partner to lean on. How does he protect himself and Chris if he should become disabled? Ross: You know, there’s a few things that Dan needs to think about beyond disability even. But from a disability standpoint, he should make sure that he’s got disability insurance, probably through the school system. They probably have that for him. And the other thing that he needs to pay really close attention to is what his overall estate plan is like. He needs to make sure that he has both a power of attorney for health care decisions as well as for financial decisions. … Chris: Now, what does power of attorney do? Ross: … If Dan is incapacitated and unable to make decisions, a power of attorney will allow someone that’s close to him make those decisions for him in hopefully a similar way than Dan would make those decisions. He also needs to pay really close attention to who would take care of Chris should something happen to Dan, if Dan would die, for example. And again, that needs to be done through the estate plan.
