Brief History
Tourists today may find it hard to believe but as recently as 1965, when Singapore became independent of Malaysia, Singapore was a backwater stopover with a few colonial trappings and not much else. That colonial period began in 1819 when Sir Stamford Raffles, a British civil servant, "founded" Singapore. As an official of the British East India Company, Raffles was charged with combing the Straits of Malacca to find a suitable trading station to counter the Dutch influence in the area. Raffles thought the tiny fishing village of Singapore perfect because it was at the crossroads of the East and West. (BTW, Singapore first received its moniker when a Sumatran prince mistaking a tiger for a lion, called the city Singapura - a Sanskrit term meaning Lion City.)

The Arrival of Raffles Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles founded Singapore. He landed in Singapore on the 28th of January 1819. Raffles and Farquhar explored the island. Raffles and Farquhar walked around Singapore. They saw the Orange Luat people in their fishing boats. They came to the Temenggong village. The Temenggong invited Raffles for fruit. Raffles could talk Malay and asked if he could build a trading port in Singapore. The Temenggong could not give him permission for he did not own Singapore. The Sultan of Johor did. Tenku Hussein was invited to Singapore were the agreement would be signed. After the agreement was signed they had a huge feast which lasted for three hours. After that Singapore belonged to Britain. England soon made Tengku Hussein the Sultan of Johor. Raffles trading port was a success. A few years later Raffles started to build some buildings. homepage

Special thanks to History of Modern Singapore 2nd edition, singapore history Come Alive! 1st edition, National Archives,Singapore
http://www.rgs.edu.sg/aec/history.html
29 January 1819 changed Singapore's fate it transformed her from a small fishing village into a prosperous, advanced country. Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, who was the British Lieutenant-Governor of Bencoolen at that time, felt that a new British trading port was needed to the south of the Malay Peninsula. Singapore was then surrounded by forest and swamp where some Malays, Chinese and Orang Laut lived. When Raffles caught sight of this tiny island, he knew he had found the very place he was looking for. It not only lay on the main trade route between China, Europe and India, it was also an excellent harbour suitable for big ships to anchor with plentiful wood and fresh water that people could use. Raffles immediately went into action. Together with his assistant, Major William Farquhar, he went to look for Temenggong Abdul Rahman (the chief of Singapore). The Temenggong was willing to give Raffles permission but he had no power, for Singapore belonged to the Sultan of Johor. Today, there are two statues of Raffles, one black and one white. One of them is located in front of Victoria Theatre and Victoria Memorial Hall where he is believed to have landed in Singapore in 1819 at this very spot. He also started a school for the people, known as Singapore Institution, and started the first Botanic Gardens at the foot of Fort Canning. Our school

Since its early beginnings that intertwine fact and folklore, Singapore has been engaged in the pomp of ancient Malay empires, the intrigues of medieval trade, the bartering of European colonial powers and the challenge of nation-building.
Here, we give you an account of the island's remarkable development throughout the centuries.
Legend has it ...

The beginnings of Singapore are steeped in local Malay legend. The island is said to have received its name from a visiting Sumatran prince in the 14th century, who saw a fearsome creature - later identified to him as a lion - on his arrival.
Taking this as a good omen, the prince founded a new city on the spot, changing the name of the island from Temasek to Singapura . In Sanskrit, "singa" means lion and "pura" means city. Thus the

History of Singapore - culture and background country
History
Singapore was first mentioned in a 3rd Century Chinese account, which described it as "Pu-luo-chung", or island at the end of the peninsula. In the 7th Century, a Malayan Buddhist Empire was established on the island of Sumatra. Temasek (Sea Town) as Singapore was then known, was a prosperous trading outpost of this empire. However, it is said that in the 13th Century, a member of the Royal family, Sang Nila Utama, was searching for a site to build a new city. Arriving at the sandy shores of the island, he mistook a tiger for a lion. Taking this as a good omen, he decided to build his new city here, naming it Singapura, the Sanskrit words for Lion City. Singapore's modern name was thus born. During World War II in 1942, the security was rudely shattered when the Japanese invaded North Malaya and advanced towards Singapore. The British administration in Singapore surrendered on February 8, 1942. Under the Japanese ruling, Singapore was renamed Syonan (light of the South), and the commerce died down.
