Introduction
Singapore is both an island and a country, but perhaps its best description is that of city-state. Like the great city-states of the past, it offers civilization and order in the highest degree. Its combination of Western-style development and Eastern-style calm seems to present the best of both hemispheres: It's a modern metropolis where you feel safe walking the streets, and it's an Asian business center that's a model of efficiency. Singapore is also a multicultural city, and close to one-quarter of its population are expatriates or foreign workers from all over the world. Known for its desire to become the technology hub of Asia, Singapore is the most wired country in the region. Singapore shares another trait with historical city-states: Its authorities strongly believe that they can safeguard the status quo with regulations against almost anything and everything that - in their view - could possibly upset the sense of tranquility. In reality, visitors will find the place is not as restrictive as the long lists of hefty fines for such things as littering and jaywalking suggest. Some visitors to Singapore leave singing the praises of a society that "works," while others feel the government's near-compulsive fixation on cleanliness and order makes Singapore sterile in every sense of the word.

It's simplicity yet ironic unpredictability soon turned it into the most popular sport on the island. Hardly surprising as this is the case everywhere except in the North America. Local Leagues were formed, while once the exclusive playground of the British presence, very soon locals were admitted too. The Leagues were highly popular and drew crowd by the thousands. Evolution of the Malaysia Cup The decades after 1930s marked the the start of the golden era in Singapore soccer. The Malaysian Cup competition was formed and the island being one of the state at that time were admitted. Singapore was always one of the strongest team. A total of 24 Championships were won. The Malaysian was immensely popular with the population, 50,000 fans were common in home games. 1965: Singapore Independence In 1965 political dispute erupted in the Malaysian Peninsular. Malaysian leaders wanted Malaysia to be ruled by Malays, Singapore leaders wanted Malaysia to be ruled by Malaysian irregardless of race, language or religion. Yes, you guessed it, Singapore leaders were not malays.

History According to Malay legend, a Sumatran prince encountered a lion - considered a good omen - on Temasek, prompting him to found Singapura, or Lion City. It mattered little that lions had never inhabited Singapore (more likely the prince had seen a tiger); what did matter was the establishment of the region as a minor trading post for the powerful Sumatran Srivijaya empire and as a subsequent vassal state of the Javanese Majapahit empire in the mid-13th century. Singapore might have remained a quiet backwater if not for Sir Stamford Raffles' intervention in 1819. The British had first established a presence in the Straits of Malacca (now called Melaka) in the 18th century when the East India Company set out to secure and protect its line of trade from China to the colonies in India.

[Upload image] An island once known as Temasek held a legend that was to change its name forever. According to a Malay legend, there was once a Sumatran prince that visited this little fishing island. During this visit, he encountered a strange and amazing animal. He later found out that the beast was called a lion. He was encouraged by an omen that stated he would find a city upon sighting the beast. Thus the name Singapura or Lion City was found. "Singa" meaning Lion and "Pura" meaning city. Moving away from the legend, the official arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819 claimed that he was the official founder of this wondrous city. What now is a beautiful city that has been transformed into a political and economic country was once a tale of the rise and fall of empires and colonialism. Having a naturally deep harbor and a shelter from disasters, made the island an important asset for trading. Traders near and far came to the "port of call" to exchange goods and set up businesses. This is how Singapore started to prosper.

With the formation of the National Heritage Board on 1st August 1993, the National Museum of Singapore was restructured into three specialised museums: Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore Art Museum and Singapore History Museum; the last of which is now housed in the National Museum Building. Prior to 1972, the emphasis of the museum was not on the history of Singapore. This had to do with the first British Resident and Commandant of Singapore (1819 - 1823), Major-General William Farquhar (1774 - 1839). An enthusiastic natural history amateur, he collected numerous local plant and animal specimens and commissioned artists to paint them.

39. SINGAPORE HISTORY
SINGAPORE BRIEF HISTORY. Some people still argue that the history of the Chinese people living on Singapore Island goes back to Johor.
http://tps.dpi.state.nc.us/connectasia/singapore/singapore_history.htm
SINGAPORE BRIEF HISTORY Since about A.D. 100's to the 1200's people have lived on Singapore Island. Some people still argue that the history of the Chinese people living on Singapore Island goes back to Johor. In Sanskrit language Singapore meant lion city because of the many tigers mistaken as lions that lived there. In 1377 invaders from Java destroyed the entire island so it became a base for pirates and a fishing village. Temasek or Sea Town was Singapore's Malay name. Sir Stamford Raffles founded the trading post in Singapore in 1819. The fourteenth century was not a great time for the Singapore Trading post. The trading Center brought more then 10,000 Chinese to Singapore. In that time the trading post was in the Srivijaya Empire before it was destroyed. The destroyers were the Majapahit Empire. On February 15, 1942 the second year of the Pacific war, Japanese took control of Singapore. Singapore was considered the capitol of the Japanese's southern regions. Singapore was supposed to be the military supply base. The southern regions headquarters was Singapore. In 1945 the British saved Singapore from the Japanese. In 1946 Singapore was made a separate crown colony of Britain. The Dutch and British compiled a founding interest in Singapore because of trading. In 1955 the people of Singapore elected their first legislature. About that time they started asking for complete independence. In 1957 all the people who lived in Singapore for eight years became a citizen. In 1959 Singapore obtained a government of their own, Britain still had control of the defense and foreign affairs. Lee Kwan Yew became the prime minister of Singapore. Lee's administration took a lot of responsibility on the growth of the nation. On September 16, 1963 Singapore joined Malaya, Sabah, and Sarawak. Singapore became one of the cleanest, safest, and most prosperous cities in Asia. In 1965 Singapore became independent.
