Environment
Singapore consists of the main, low-lying Singapore Island and 63 smaller islands within its territorial waters. Urban areas comprise almost 50% of the land area, while parkland, reservoirs, plantations and open military areas occupy 40%. Singapore Island measures approximately 42km (26mi) east to west and 23km (14mi) north to south at its widest points. While there are built-up, high-density areas all around the island, the main city area is in the south, built on the shores of the Singapore River. The Central Business District (CBD) is at the southern shore of the river's mouth. Chinatown adjoins the CBD to the southwest. To the north of the Singapore River is the colonial district, which has many reminders of British rule. Further north again is Little India and Arab St. Orchard Rd runs northwest from the colonial district. To the west of the island is Jurong, an industrial area with a sprinkling of tourist attractions. The east coast has some of the older residential areas, a major beach park and the international airport. The northeast is the location of huge housing developments and the central north of the island has most of Singapore's undeveloped land and remaining forest. A 1km (0.6mi) causeway connects Singapore with Johor Bahru in Malaysia; a second causeway has opened on the west of the island to relieve congestion. Under current plans, land reclamation and housing developments should dramatically alter Singapore's geography.

Size Doesn't Matter Back to Information The low-lying island of Singapore is about 660 square kilometres in size and has more than 50 smaller islands within its territorial waters. Almost half of the mainland comprises urban areas while parkland, reservoirs and nature reserves occupy the remainder. Much of the island lies within 15 metres of sea level. The considerable stretches of coastline are mostly unnatural formations due to land reclamation and other modifications. All this to make way for Singapore's growing population, now reaching 4 million. Although the waters are not exactly a surfer's dream, you can still have a great picnic, enjoy the sun and the cool sea breeze. The centre of the island is home to most of Singapore's undeveloped land and remaining forest. This is where you'll find the island's highest natural peak, the 165 metre high Bukit Timah Hill. This hill and the surrounding nature reserve holds the island's largest area of primary rainforest and most of what is left of Singapore's wilderness. Over 800 species of native plants including giant trees, ferns and wild flowers, as well as the long tailed macaque and mischievous lemurs can be found here. Spotting more exotic creatures like the racquet tailed drongo and white-bellied sea eagle make this reserve worth a visit as well.

CIA World Factbook Entry More than 3,000 multinational companies have offices in this tropical island nation at the entrance to the Strait of Malacca. Only a swampy Malay fishing village when Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles established a trade depot in 1819, Singapore is now Southeast Asia's financial hub. Once part of the British Empire, it became independent in 1965.
Political stability, maintained by the one-party dominance of Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, and low corporate taxes help explain Singapore's emergence as a center of high-tech manufacturing. In office from 1959 to 1990, Lee drew criticism for curbing freedoms of press and political assembly, yet citizens enjoy one of the highest living standards in Asia, despite the financial crisis that has severely depressed the economies of other nations. Singapore has one of the world's highest computer-to-household ratios. Text source: National Geographic Atlas of the World, Seventh Edition
