I read this book on my one-way flight to Singapore 4 years ago, and took it as dogma... unfortunately, it was a highly oversimplified and utterly narrow view of a very modern, unique society. I lived, worked and taught college there for three years, and later realized it was a bad idea to rely on an American expat wife for insightful cultural and business advice!

ne of the first people to register with the Corporate Governance NETwork , Jin Liu, Liu.Jin@anu.edu.au , is doing a comparative study of Australia and Singapore. The Seven Cultures of Capitalism by Charles Hampden-Turner and Alfonss Trompenaars (H-TT) offers insights to comparative corporate governance. The book is based on a questionnaire administered to 15,000 managers from around the world by the Center for International Business Studies in Amstelveen, The Netherlands. At the risk taking H-TT's work out of context and of alienating both the Chinese and English sides of my family, I offer a few of their findings that might be of interest to Jin Liu and others interested in cultural differences in corporate governance. Singapore's culture seems to favor long term working relations; managers from Singapore responding to the survey are almost 3 times more likely than Australians to assume a long term commitment to the company they work for. They have a cultural affinity for the cooperative approach of Deming's quality circles and Joe Scanlon's self-managed groups. Australia is more typical of English-speaking cultures which tend to idolize the individual entrepreneur such as T. Boone Pickens, Lord Hanso and Rupert Murdoch. (p. 60) Achievement/Ascription based on Age. Australians were more like to confer status by achievement; Singaprorians by age. H-TT argue that "a company, knowing it must pay more as its employees age, will make sure that they mature in all possible ways, as well and grow more valuable to their company in that process. To fail to invest continuously in their upgrading would be disastrous." (p. 91) "The system of mutually reinforcing ascription and achievement seems to work best." (p. 93)

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Singapore - Culture The city proper, which stretches north and east of the port area, is characterized by low (40 - 50 m., 140 - 150 ft,) hills. Within the city run the Singapore and Rochor rivers, which are tidal inlets crowded with native craft. The original settlement north of the Singapore River remains the heart of the city; it is the locale of the principal commercial, government, and public buildings and the Anglican St. Andrew's Cathedral (1862). Singapore's port area, one of the world's largest, covers 93 km2 (36 mi2). The Port of Singapore Authority operates six gateways (Jurong port, Container Terminal, Keppel, Telok Ayer, Sembawang, and Pasir Panjang wharves) that provide facilities for vessels ranging from oceangoing liners to lighters. The Keppel wharves, which lie protected between the islands of Brani and Sentosa, are deepwater and contain major docks and warehouses. Keppel is Southeast Asia's major transshipment point for exports of oil, rubber, plywood, lumber, and spices. The port's main imports include machinery, textiles, and rice. The Malayan rail system from Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur terminates at Singapore. In addition to its port activities, Singapore has tin-smelting works, pineapple canneries, rubber factories, oil refineries, and sawmills. The east lagoon is the regional centre for container transshipments. Jurong is a large industrial estate and port west of the city. Singapore's thriving banking, insurance, and brokerage firms and its excellent transport, communications, and storage facilities have helped make it the chief trading and financial centre of Southeast Asia. The city-state's post-World War II economic activities have been so successful that Singapore is now virtually a developed country.
