ABOUT SINGAPORE
Culture
Being a multi-racial country, Singapore has no specific cultural dance, food or music. Instead, it enjoys a mix of culture that borrows from the many different races in Singapore. However, we do have a national costume, the "Orchid Dress" which is made from fabric with orchid prints on it. We celebrate all the different holidays of the different races and these holidays include Good Friday, Lunar New Year, Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali. Singlish, best explained as Singapore English, is the unique way we speak. It springs from English, mixed with a dash of Chinese, a spoonful of Malay, a sprinkle of Tamil and a generous serving of dialect, garnished with a distinct Singaporean accent. If you are new to Singlish, you most probably will not recognize we are actually just speaking English, and it doesn't help that we speak at a very fast pace (or so we have too often been told). Singlish was developed over the years against the backdrop of a multi-racial society. Here's a collection of Singlish you may find handy on your visit to Singapore or during your next conversation with a Singaporean.

Ziauddin Sardar arrives in Singapore to find it’s been occupied
I T has been my misfortune to arrive in various places around the world only to be engulfed in local crisis. I am no stranger to war, rumours of war, coups d'etat and various natural disasters. But never before had I stepped off a plane to be confronted with cultural homicide. Changi Airport is globalization run riot, an impersonal consumerist cornucopia of designer labels. It is also dedicated to being the world's premier transport hub. From here you can go anywhere, ushered along by the ubiquitous Singapore Girl. Whenever I arrive in the building, I leave as rapidly as possible, hoping for a talkative ride into Singapore city centre, courtesy of a local taxi driver. And that is how the full scale of the culture crisis overwhelmed me. I was spared the usual inquisition that introduces conversation- where are you from, how's the economy there, how long are you staying, what do you think of Singapore. Enough to say I was down from Kuala Lumpur for the weekend to invoke a deluge of angst. 'Ah, no need sorry for my Singlish lah . You boleh Singlish, ah? Very bad, ah. Prime Minister say Singlish cannot, ah. So now what

Friday, June 11, 2004 VOLUME 1 ISSUE 12 HOME Doing CI in Singapore: a cultural perspective.
Dr. Jo N. Berg, Berg Business Research, Singapore. jo@berg.com.sg
Summary: What is culture, and how does culture influence the way we do competitive intelligence? Singapore business is largely based on relationships, and this can make telephone interviews challenging. One way of meeting this challenge is to focus on preparation, disclosure, starting safe, and information sharing. Jo Berg reviews Singapore's culture and the four factors that influence the success of your Singapore interviews.
What is culture, and how does culture influence the way we do competitive intelligence? This article will look at these questions from the perspective of Singapore.
There are different ways of looking at culture. One way to define culture is a shared system of meanings that distinguishes the members of one category of people from another. It can be seen as a kind of mental map that guides our relationship to our surroundings and other people. Some cultural aspects are explicit, while others are implicit. Implicit aspects, like values and beliefs, tend to be harder for outsiders to detect and understand than explicit cultural aspects.
So what is Singapore culture like? Singapore has a culturally diverse population of about 4.1 million people. There are three main ethnic groups, Chinese, Malay, and Indian, with Chinese being the largest group. This range of ethnicity means different languages are used in Singapore. English is, however, the working language of the country, used for business, administration, and education. Most Singaporeans in the business community speak excellent English.

The Islamic Calendar, which is based purely on lunar cycles, was first introduced in 638 C.E. by the close companion of the Prophet (PBUH) and the second Caliph, `Umar ibn Al-KHaTTab (592-644 C.E.) RAA. He did it in an attempt to rationalize the various, at times conflicting, dating systems used during his time. `Umar consulted with his advisors on the starting date of the new Muslim chronology. It was finally agreed that the most appropriate reference point for the Islamic calendar was the Hijrah. The actual starting date for the Calendar was chosen (on the basis of purely lunar years, counting backwards) to be the first day of the first month (1 MuHarram) of the year of the Hijrah. The Islamic (Hijri) calendar (with dates that fall within the Muslim Era) is usually abbreviated A.H. in Western languages from the latinized Anno Hegirae, "in the year of the Hegira".
