Street performances are held during important festivals such as Chinese New Year. The Lion Dance is a spectacular, acrobatic dance usually performed during Chinese festivals. Other performing arts include Malay and Indian dances. Older Singaporeans are keen on Chinese opera, which is a colourful mix of dialogue, music, song and dance. It is an ancient form of theatre which reached the peak of its popularity during the Ming Dynasty from the 14th to the 17th century. The acting is heavy and stylised, and the music is cacophonous to most Western ears. Singapore is the food capital of Asia. Chinese, Indian, Malay, Indonesian and Western foods are all on offer, and some of the most tasty creations are those sold from the atmospheric street stalls. Nonya cooking is a local variation on Chinese and Malay food, mixing Chinese ingredients with local spices such as lemongrass and coconut cream. The popular spicy, coconut-based soup laksa is a classic Nonya dish. Singapore is a great place to discover tropical fruits. Some of the more unusual ones on offer include rambutan, mangosteen, durian, jackfruit, pomelo, starfruit, zirzat, buah duku, chiku and jeruk.

Culture and religion remain entwined in Singapore, far more than in the West. Throughout the year, a constant stream of festivals and celebrations in the streets and temples reflect the diverse beliefs and backgrounds of this multicultural society, comprising of Buddhists, Taoists, Muslims, Hindus, Christians and Sikhs. Many of the major Buddhist, Muslim and Hindu festivals are marked by public holidays and Christmas is just one more holiday - for which shops stay open.
The city's art scene, while mainly conventional, reflects the flavours of the region; Malay, Chinese and Indian performances, art and music are on offer. Mainstream performing arts are also well represented, culminating in the Singapore Arts Festival, held every year in June, which attracts dance, theatre and music groups from all over the world. Andrew Lloyd Webber productions are a favourite. Year-round performances from overseas tend to be heavily oversubscribed and tickets should be booked well in advance. Domestic performers are of a high standard and easier to experience. Free musical and theatrical performances are held regularly in local parks, for example, the Singapore's Dance Theatre performs Ballet Under the Stars twice a year at Fort Canning Park.

Understanding the culture and heritage of Singapore, the different races and languages like Singlish.
Singapore Culture Singapore is a cosmopolitan society where people live harmoniously and interaction among different races are commonly seen. The pattern of Singapore stems from the inherent cultural diversity of the island. The immigrants of the past have given the place a mixture of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European influences, all of which have intermingled. Behind the facade of a modern city, these ethnic races are still evident. The areas for the different races, which were designated to them by Sir Stamford Raffles, still remain although the bulk of Singaporeans do think of themselves as Singaporeans, regardless of race or culture. Each still bears its own unique character. The old streets of Chinatown can still be seen; the Muslim characteristics are still conspicuous in Arab Street; and Little India along Serangoon Road still has its distinct ambience. Furthermore, there are marks of the British colonial influence in the Neo-Classical buildings all around the city.

Country Info Singapore Introduction Singapore General Data Singapore Maps Singapore Culture ... Singapore Time and Date Singapore Culture Back to Top Singapore's leaders reacted to the unanticipated 1965 separation from Malaysia, which left a city without a hinterland, by deciding to "go cosmopolitan." This meant seeking a place in the world rather than in the regional economy; it also meant maintaining a certain social and cultural distance from neighboring countries while deliberately fostering a new and distinctively Singaporean culture and social identity. By late 1989 Singapore was cosmopolitan, prosperous, modernized, and orderly. Its population was educated in English, worked for multinational corporations, and consumed a worldwide popular culture of film, music, and leisure activities. English was, however, a second language for most, and many distinctively Chinese, Indian, and Malay customs, practices, and attitudes continued. In contrast to many countries of the region, Singapore's avowed social values were secular, democratic (within certain limits), and nondiscriminatory.

Singapore History
Singapore might have remained another sleepy Malaysian backwater if not for Sir Stamford Raffles, who established the East India Company in Singapore in 1819 and began the city's status as a free port. As thousands of Chinese, Indians and Malays flocked to the island, Raffles maintained control by segregating the city into ethnic neighborhoods: the Chinese in Chinatown, Indians in Little India and Muslims in Arab Street. This division had the unintended effect of preserving the distinct cultures you can find there today. The country remained under the control of the British until it was captured by the Japanese at the start of World War II - one of the most embarrassing defeats in British history. After the war, the Allies' plan to unite Singapore with Malaysia was scuttled by Malaysian nationalist groups who feared that the ethnic Chinese would dominate the less populous Malays. The plan for a union was revived in the 1950s by Singapore's president, Lee Kuan Yew, who believed his country could not survive without the natural resources of Malaysia. Lee realized his dream in 1963 when Singapore was united with Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak. But the union lasted only 23 months - Malay leaders, shocked to see Lee's party attempt to become a national force, unceremoniously tossed Singapore out of the republic.

The British imported Chinese workers as well as peoples from other parts of the empires. These groups often congregated into their own districts, giving Singapore areas with distinctive buildings and styles. Take a walk down Arab street, where you'll find fabrics from across Asia. Not far from here, along Serangoon street, is "little India." Of course, there's also a Chinatown. Over the last few years or so, numerous "historical" areas have been developed, such as Bugis Junction, Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Tanjong Pagar. These are very tourist-oriented areas, where the development has a Disneyland quality to it. The buildings have been completely gutted, and some even built from scratch, to conform to an ideal of what we think old Singapore should look like, rather than what they really were. That doesn't make them bad places for eating a relaxing dinner, though. Our favorite is Clarke Quay. It has the requisite compliment of far too many restaurants to choose from easily, but unlike Boat Quay just down the river, it also has carts and small curio shops to poke around in while trying to decide what kind of food you're in the mood for. Not that Boat Quay is without its own charms. Almost all the dining area is right on the river. Across the river, the neo-classical museum is brightly lit at night, making a highly romantic setting for an intimate dinner. After dinner, take a stroll down past the end of Boat Quay where the plaza of a large modern office complex affords many places to sit and watch the lights play on the water. At this point you're not far from what is currently the most popular club in Singapore, Centro.

Server will be down for maintenance on 2004-06-11 from about 18:00 to 18:30 UTC. Singapore is a small and relatively modern amalgram of Chinese Malay and Indian settlers, there appears little in the way of specifically Singaporean culture. In an entirely unique fashion, the various ethnic groups continue to celebrate their own cultures. It is probably the only place in the world where you can find a Malay Wedding taking place beside a Chinese wedding at a void deck , for example. The major holidays reflect how the local culture celebrate this diversity. Unlike many other multi-cultural societies, major public holidays include the Gregorian Calendar New Year, Chinese New Year Hari Raya Haji and Deepavali Thanks to a shared heritage and a similar racial mix, Singaporean culture has many similarities to Malaysian culture. Some remnants of Peranakan (Straits Chinese) culture are also visible, particularly in Singaporean cuisine. Some uniquely Singaporean cultural concepts include:
    • Singlish , the local dialect of English Katong laksa , a noodle dish developed in Singapore Zouk , one of Asia's best-known nightclubs
