Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism
This section contains comprehensive information on Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism. These religions have some fundamental relation with Hinduism and with the Indian subcontinent. The first three religions originated in ancient India, while Zoroastrianism and the Vedic Religion seemed to have enjoyed an early fraternity. The followers of these two religions were probably descendents of the same Aryan stock and shared a sense of brotherhood at least in the early stages till differences arose and they parted their ways. >The Main Categories Hinduism Buddhism Jainism Sikhism Zoroastrianism Spiritualism Utilities Bhagavadgita Upanishads Saivism Vedas Symbolism Temples eTexts Health Literature > Shopping Categories Art Astrology Auctions Automobiles Babies Books Clothing Computers Cookies Coupons Dating DVD's Education Electronics Films/Videos Flowers Food/Gourmet Furniture Gifts Groceries Handicrafts Handbags Health Insurance Internet Jewelry Jobs Kids Loans Magazines Music Pets Phones Search Shoes Software Stocks Students Toys Travel Vacation Weddings Women Best Bargains Special Offers My Shops All Stores ... AN INTRODUCTION TO EASTERN RELIGIONS AND THE LAND OF EASTERN RELEGIONS - BIHAR
There exists a land on both sides of the river Ganges in India which occupies the same place for people believing in Eastern Religions as does Jerusalem and the neighbouring areas for the people belonging to Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Great philosophers, sages, kings, and the knowers of Truth lived here. The word `Bihar' is a distortion of the word `Vihar' from Sanskrit, which means, ( a ) wander, and ( b ) a Buddhist monastery. Both these meanings are appropriate because ( a ) Lord Mahavira and many other Jain Tirthankars, and also Lord Buddha, wandered around in this land, and ( b ) It had numerous Buddhist monasteries and was the Centre of Buddhism . The messages these people left for the rest of the world took forms of different Eastern Religions called Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. The scriptures that millions and millions of people read contain the same Truth but, because of the various limitations of different people, the same Truth appears differently to them. This land is called Bihar which is one of the states of India. Hinduism as it is known these days, was known as the Sanatana Dharma which actually means that this religion has always existed

    PREFACE
Religion has had a very important role to play in human lives. Today, it is being used in both the constructive and destructive ways. The examples of the first one are the food and other kinds of aid, opening of medical centres, shelters for destitutes, orphans, and many other humanitarian works which cannot be even enumerated. On the other hand, the killings in Northern Ireland, Yugoslavia, Armenia, Middle East, Pakistan and India are also going on, in the name of religion. It is a very sensitive issue in the western countries, as much as it is in the eastern countries because the separation of the church and the state took place, not too far back in the history of Europe. The dominant role of religion in the under developed countries is well known. The presentation here, is my understanding of various religions and I do not claim any credit for anything new here. These religions have existed for thousands and thousands of years and have been discussed in many books on these religions. The readers will find after reading this book that these are the human actions and thinking which are the determining factors in our peaceful existence and not, whether there is God or not. The Truth lies in our identification with everything around us. Finally, I would like to thank Ms. Yvonne Raymond for typing the manuscript.

We might note here that the Eastern religions described here all originated in India, and that Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism were offshoots of Hinduism. Among the Western faiths, Judaism, Christianity and Islam all share a common root in Abraham, and in recent times the term Abrahamic has been coined to denote these three world religions. Naturally there are important exceptions to the views expressed (for example, Buddhism does not believe in a Personal God). Nevertheless these broad generalities are useful, as they give a scholarly window into the East and the West. By the late 1990s Sikhism was the world's fifth largest faith and had some 175,000 U.S. adherents and 225,000 in Canada. Sikhism is heterodox, combining the teachings of Bhakti Hinduism and Islamic Sufism. The founder and first Sikh guru caste udasis ) from the laity, eliminated most features of Hinduism, and introduced the Gurmukhi script. Under the fourth guru, Ram Das, Amritsar was founded as a sacred city. Arjun, the fifth guru, compiled devotional poetry by earlier Sikh gurus and other prominent saints into the Sikh scripture, the Adigranth, which remains central to Sikh religious life. Under succeeding gurus the Sikh community gradually united and began to develop military power; the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb responded by executing the ninth guru and ordering the destruction of Sikh temples.
